Elective Credits In addition to the 18 compulsory credits, students must earn 12 elective credits selected from the courses listed as available in the school course calendar. General Course Information Definition of a Credit A credit is recognition of the successful completion of a course for which a minimum of 110 hours is scheduled. A credit is granted to a student by the principal of a secondary school on behalf of the Minister of Education. Definitions of Types of Courses Four types of courses are offered in Grade 9 and 10: • Academic courses emphasize theory and abstract problems • Applied courses focus on practical applications and concrete examples • Open courses are designed to prepare students for further study in certain subjects and to enrich their education generally • Essential / Locally Developed courses are designed to prepare students for transition from high school to the workforce. Available to Fast Forward students only Course Coding System The course code consists of a course title and a sixth character code: The first five characters are designated by the Ministry of Education and Training. The Waterloo Region District School Board determines the sixth character. Recognition of Academic Excellence School Honour Roll Guidelines: The following guidelines will be used to determine the names of students who will be placed on the school’s Honour Roll. The selections will be made at the conclusion of the school year. Grades 9-10 – average of the 8 courses taken throughout the school year. Grades 11-12 – average of the best 6 courses taken throughout the school year. In keeping with Ministry and Board direction, 80% will be used as the minimum average for Honour standing. Cooperative Education Cooperative Education is a unique method of learning designed for Grades 11 and 12 students to combine the resources of an in-school course with a planned and supervised on-the-job experience in a business, in- dustry or community organization. Work placements are arranged and monitored by the school and are designed to provide opportunities to apply skills and concepts learned in a particular in-school program. It allows the student to learn more about the realities of the workplace, to explore career opportunities and to assist in the transition from school to post-secondary education or directly to the workforce. E-LEARNING: Online Courses E-Learning is a program delivery model that provides students with an opportunity to earn secondary school credits online. Specialist High Skills Major The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program offers students the opportunity to explore a specific community, economic and/or industry sector of interest and to acquire skills and experiences within that sector, preparing them for a post-secondary destination in one of four pathways: Apprenticeship, College, University or the Workplace. Fast Forward is geared toward students who are 2-4 years behind in academics. Fast Forward is a unique diploma granting program that allows students to shape their own future. Through the Fast Forward program, students earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma while studying academics at the essential level and learning the skills they need to build a rewarding career in their areas of interest. Fast Forward helps students by: Offering essential –level academic programming Providing an opportunity to learn both inside and outside of the classroom environment Providing opportunities for ‘hands-on’ training for a specific industry Developing communication and interpersonal skills in the classroom Building student self-confidence through personal success in the learning environment Providing a solid foundation for lifelong learning Preparing students for rewarding careers and promising futures HOW TO APPLY: This program requires an application and is subject to Admin approval. ARTS ADA2OI, Dramatic Arts, Open Students further their study of drama by exploring acting, directing and designing for the stage. Regular attendance, participation and a willingness to engage in performances either on stage or back stage are essential to success in this course. ADA2OB, Dramatic Arts, Grade 10, Open This course builds cooperation and communication skills. It focuses on the various skills necessary to put on a theatrical production such as acting and stage craft, and technical knowledge such as lighting and sound. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. AMG2OB. Guitar Music, Grade 10, Open Students taking this course will learn to use the guitar as a harmonic and melodic instrument. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. AMG2OI, Guitar Music, Grade 10, Open Students taking this course will learn to use the guitar as a harmonic and melodic instrument. AMU2OI, Music, Grade 10, Open Students will continue to develop technique on their instrument while performing instrumental repertoire in a variety of musical styles. Students will perform solos and in groups to gain a greater knowledge of analyzing and performing music. Recommended Preparation: AMU1OI AVI2OI, Visual Arts, Grade 10, Open This course builds on the AVI1OI fundamentals through practice and skill-building, as well as learning new concepts, materials, and processes. Recommended prerequisite: AVI1OI AWA2OB, Visual Arts, Grade 10, Open This course introduces students to crafts involving several media. Students will create a variety of projects including glass and clay. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. AWA2OI, Visual Arts and General Crafts, Grade 10, Open This course introduces students to crafts involving several media. Students will create a variety of projects including glass and clay. ADA3OB, Dramatic Arts, Grade 11, Open Students continue to explore and develop cooperation and communication skills. They will have hands-on experiences with various aspects of production, including performance, set, lighting, costumes, and stage management. This course often culminates in a whole class performance. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. ADA3MI, Dramatic Arts, Grade 11, University/College This course focuses on analyzing the functions of performers and backstage technicians. It explores various theatrical approaches, both in performance and production. Attendance, participation and a willingness to perform are essential to success in this course. This course typically culminates in a whole class performance. Prerequisite: ADA1OI or ADA2OI AMG3OB, Music, Grade 11, Open This course explores the development of popular music and its impact on society. Students will be given the opportunity to learn to play a keyboard or percussion instrument and develop their musical skills through creativity, individual and group work and performance. Stu- dents will also study music production and composition and have the opportunity to work in a recording studio . This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program.
AMG3OI, Guitar Music, Grade 11, Open Due to the progressive nature of the curriculum expectations, it is strongly recommended that students complete AMG2OI prior to taking this course. Students will continue to develop technique on their instrument while performing instrumental repertoire in a variety of musical styles. Recommended Preparation: AMU1OI, AMU2OI, or AMG2OI AMU3MI, Music, Grade 11, University/College Students will continue to develop advanced technical skills on their instrument while analyzing and performing instrumental repertoire in a variety of musical styles. Students will have the opportunity to learn a secondary instrument (woodwind, brass, string and percussion) and develop technique while performing solo and group repertoire. Prerequisite AMU1OI or AMU2OI AVI3OI, Visual Arts, Grade 11, Open This course will include an exploration of hands-on materials and processes in art-making. AWA3OI, Visual Arts Crafts General, Grade 11, Open This course stresses quality and workmanship while considering creative process and critical analysis through the use of various glass techniques. Recommended Preparation: AWA2OI AWQ3OI, Digital Photography, Grade 11, Open Students don’t need to own a camera to learn more about taking good photos with software, their phones, and other devices. Tech- nical skills, composition, and concepts will be explored in this fun course. You may bring your DSLR, if you have access to one. Recommended Preparation: AVI1OI and/or AVI2OI ADA4EB, Dramatic Arts, Grade 12, Workplace This course continues the development of practical skills in performance, directing and technical theatre. Possible theatre employment and careers are explored. This course culminates in a whole class performance. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. ADA4MI, Dramatic Arts, Grade 12, College or University This course furthers the study of production roles such as director, stage manager, and actor, as well as exploring the 20th Century Theater. Attendance, participation and a willingness to perform are essential to success in this course. This course culminates in a full theatrical production. Prerequisite: ADA3MI AMG4MI, Guitar Music, Grade 12, University/College Students will continue to develop technique on their instrument while performing instrumental repertoire in a variety of musical styles. Prerequisite: AMG3OI AMU4MI, Music, Grade 12, University/College Students will develop advanced technical skills on their instrument while analyzing and performing instrumental repertoire in a variety of musical styles. Students may learn a secondary instrument (woodwind, brass, string and percussion) and develop technique while performing repertoire and participating in solo and group performance. Students will concentrate on developing interpretive skills, the ability to work independently, and will also complete complex creative projects. Prerequisite: AMU3MI
AVI4MI, Visual Arts, Grade 12, University/College This course integrates previous skills and concepts allowing students to explore personal themes, a variety of mediums, and pre- pare a portfolio website. Prerequisite: AVI3MI AVI4EI, Visual Arts (Crafts General), Grade 12, Workplace This course allows students to explore both digital and hands-on art-making and build on previous skills. Digital literacy They will be able to create a portfolio website of their works. Prerequisite: AVI3OI/AWA3OB/AWA3OI AWA4MI, Visual Arts Crafts General, Grade 12, University/College Students will create high quality projects using various glass techniques including etching, mosaics, stained glass and fusing. There will be a focus on creative process and critical analysis process. Students will develop an understanding of the functions of business, including accounting, marketing, personal finance, human resources, production, as well as the importance of ethics and social responsibility. BBI2OI, Introduction to Business, Grade 10, Open This course introduces students to the world of business. If you took BBI1OI, you are not eligible to enroll in this course. ICS2OI, Computer Programming, Grade 10, Open In this course you will be introduced to computer programming. We will plan and write simple computer programs by applying fundamental programming concepts, and learn to create clear and maintainable internal documentation. We will also learn to manage a computer by studying hardware configurations, software selection, operating system functions, networking, and safe computing practices. We will also investigate the social impact of computer technologies, and develop an understanding of envi- ronmental and ethical issues related to the use of computers. BAF3MI, Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11, University/College This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting. Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business. Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and current issues and ethics in accounting BDI3CI, Entrepreneurship; The Venture, Grade 11, College (offered odd years) This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. Through hands-on experiences, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs. Students will create a venture plan and run a student-run school-based business. BMI3CI, Marketing: Goods, Services, Events, Grade 11, College (offered even years) Why do we buy the products and services that we do? This course seeks to answer this question through the fundamental con- cepts of marketing, specifically product, price, place and promotion. Students will study advertising from around the world and learn about the various approaches used to create great advertisements. Students will also develop and present a marketing plan for local businesses.
BMX3EB, Retail and Service Marketing, Grade 11, Workplace This course introduces the fundamentals of running a store. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. BAT4MI, Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12, University/College This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for postsecondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. This course further develops accounting methods for assets and introduces accounting for partnerships, corporations, and sources of financing. Prerequisite: BAF3MI BBB4MI, International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12, University/College This course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the many factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, and managing international business effectively. This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management. Prerequisite: Any University, University/College, or College course in Business Studies, English or Canadian and World Issues BOH4MI, Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, Grade 12, University/College This course focuses on the principles of management and how organizations deal with issues affecting their competitiveness in a chang- ing global business environment. Contemporary management issues such as the impact of technology, case studies, leadership and team building exercises are components of this course to understand what makes a good manager and how to make good business decisions. Prerequisite: Any University, University/College, or College course in Business Studies, English or Canadian and World Issues CIA4UI Economics, Grade 12, University If you have ever been curious to understand why gas prices change so much, why the government increased the minimum wage, or how to predict changes in the stock market this course is for you. Economics is the study of how people interact with things of value; in particular, the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. So understanding economics is fundamental to running a successful business. In this course, you will learn about the principles of microeconomics and macroeconomics, apply economic models and concepts to interpret economic information, assess the validity of statistics, and investigate marketplace dynamics. In a nutshell, you will learn to predict the future activities of consumers and how to make business decisions based on this information. CANADIAN AND WORLD STUDIES GEOGRAPHY CGG3OB, Travel and Tourism: A Geographic Perspective, Grade 11, Open This course focuses on issues related to travel and tourism within and between various regions of the world. Students will investigate unique environmental, social, cultural, economic, and political characteristics of selected world regions. They will explore travel patterns and trends, as well as problems related to tourism. Students will investigate the impact of the travel industry on natural and human en- vironments. CGG3OI, Travel and Tourism: A Geographic Perspective, Grade 11, Open This course focuses on issues related to travel and tourism within and between various regions of the world. Students will investi- gate unique environmental, social, cultural, economic, and political characteristics of selected world regions. They will explore travel patterns and trends, as well as problems related to tourism, and will predict future tourism destinations. Students will investigate the impact of the travel industry on natural and human environments. Prerequisite: CGC1DI or CGC 1PI CGW4UI, Canadian and World Issues: A Geographic Analysis, Grade 12, University This course looks at the global challenge of creating a more sustainable and equitable world. Students will explore a range of issues involving environmental, economic, social, and geopolitical interrelationships, and will examine governmental policies related to these issues. Students will apply the concepts of geographic thinking and the geographic inquiry process, including spatial technologies to investigate these complex issues, including their impact on natural and human communities around the world. Prerequisite: Any University or University/College course in Canadian and World Studies, English, or Social Sciences and Humanities CGR4EI, Living in a Sustainable World, Grade 12, Workplace This course examines the impact of human activity on the natural environment. Students will explore the use of natural spaces and resources and the effects of planning decisions and consumer choices on natural systems. Students will apply the concepts of geo- graphic thinking and the geographic inquiry process. Including spatial technologies, to investigate practical solutions to environmen- tal issues, enabling them to make more sustainable decisions at home, in the workplace, and in the local community. HISTORY CHC2DI, Canadian History in the Twentieth Century, Grade 10, Academic This course explores the local, national and global forces that have shaped Canada’s national identity from World War I to present. CHC2PB, Canadian History, Grade 10, This course focusses on the connections between the student and key people, events, and themes in Canadian history from World War I to the present. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. CHC2PI, Canadian History in the Twentieth Century, Grade 10, Applied This course explores some of the pivotal events and experiences that have influenced the development of Canada’s identity as a nation from World War I to the present. CHV2OB, Civics, Grade 10, Open This course explores what it means to be an informed, participating citizen in a democratic society. This is a 0.5 credit. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program. CHV2OH, Civics, Grade 10, Open This course explores what it means to be an informed, participating citizen in a democratic society. This is a 0.5 credit. CHW3MI, World History to the Sixteenth Century (Ancient Civilizations), Grade 11, University/College This ‘odyssey through the ages’ will allow students to develop an appreciation of civilizations such as ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome as well as the cultures of Europe and the Middle East. Prerequisite: CHC2DI or CHC2PI CHM4EB, Adventures in World History, Grade 12, Workplace This course explores a variety of human experiences in world history from earliest times to the present. This course is for students in the Fast Forward Program CHY4CI, World History: The West and the World, Grade 12, College This course will study the history of the world since the sixteenth century. Prerequisite: CHC2DI or CHC2PI CHY4UI, World History: The West and the World, Grade 12, University This course will study the French Revolution, the rise of Karl Marx, WWII and other key events and ideas that have helped to shape today’s world. Prerequisite: Any University or University/College course in Canadian and World Studies, English, or Social Sciences and Humanities
LAW CLU3MI, Understanding Canadian Law, Grade 11, University/College This course explores Canadian law with a focus on legal issues that are relevant to peoples’ everyday lives. Students will investigate fundamental legal concepts and processes to gain a practical understanding of Canada’s legal system, including the criminal justice system. Students will use critical-thinking, inquiry, and communication skills to develop informed opinions on legal issues and apply this knowledge in a variety of ways and settings, including case analysis, legal research projects, mock trials, and debates. The focus of this course is on criminal law including law enforcement processes (investigation, arrest and detainment) and courtroom proce- dures (trial preparation, jury selection, legal defenses and sentencing). Prerequisite: Canadian History Since World War I, Grade 10 Academic or Applied (CHC2DI or CHC2PI) CLN4UI, Canadian and International Law, Grade 12, University This course examines elements of Canadian and international law in the social, political and global contexts. Students will study historical sources of law and the principles of international law and will learn to relate them to issues in Canadian society and the wider world. Students will use critical-thinking and communication skills to analyze legal issues, conduct independent research, and present the results of their inquiries in a variety of ways. The focus of this course in on constitutional law, and includes examining philosophies of law and justice, historical influences on Canadian law, and the legislative process. Particular emphasis in this course is placed on the development, application and influence of the Canadian constitution and Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Prerequisite: Any University or University/College course in Canadian and World Studies, English, or Social Sciences and Humanities CO-OP DCO3OC, DCO3OO, Creating Opportunities through Co-op, Grade 11, Open Co-op provides an outstanding and valuable opportunity for students to gain community‐connected placement experience as well as learning workplace related curriculum. Following the completion of pre-placement, students will work for the remainder of the semester at their co-op placement where they, together with their teacher and supervisor set goals and work towards them. COOPD, Cooperative Education Linked to a Related Course, Grade 11, Open COOP2B, Cooperative Education Linked to a Related Course, Grade 11, Open (Fast Forward) Coop consists of a community‐connected experience and a curriculum that incorporates relevant expectations from the student’s related course. Within the context of the workplace experience, students will have the opportunity to apply, extend, and refine their skills and knowledge. This is a 2-credit course in the workplace and classroom. ENGLISH ENG2DI, English, Grade 10, Academic The fundamentals of essay writing, text analysis, language and media will be emphasized in anticipation of senior university preparation courses. Students will be expected to complete a significant amount of reading and writing in this course. Prerequisite: ENG1DI or ENG1PI FUTACD, Futures Forum (English, Civics and Careers), Grade 10, Academic Students of the Futures Forum classroom take control of their learning. Using inquiry, project, and game-based learning, students get to build their confidence and ultimately own the content of the course. Students are encouraged to write, not just for their teacher, but for the world to see. We strive to create projects that have an authentic purpose and benefit our community. Students will become informed, purposeful and active citizens. Students will participate in a specific timetable where they study Academic English (ENG 2DU), Civics (CHV2OU), and Careers (GLC2OU). The contents of these courses are combined to demonstrate their inter- connectivity, creating a highly engaging and motivating learning environment.
