1. Introduction The Information Technology & Telecommunications (IT&T) Business Unit of Athens International Airport (AIA) is the network and infrastructure owner, operator and integrator within the airport fence, providing reliable, state-of-the-art and innovative one-stop services. Aiming on keeping a premium position in the forefront of new generation IT&T solutions and services, apart of its highly specialised resources, IT&T has established strong global business partnerships with distinguished technology partners. The basic pillars of the IT&T customer-centric philosophy are Excellence in operations, Innovative solutions & services, Simplicity and Cost effectiveness. 2. Data Communications 2.1. Internet The Internet service aims at the provision of access to internet facilities for AIA internal and external customers. The internet service is provided to all end-users: AIA employees and all AIA Customers. The services are mainly Switching based (or Layer 2) services and/or Routing Services (or Layer 3). The objective is to satisfy corporate aims and business needs, maintain the operability of airport data network and provide users a reliable, fast, and manageable network infrastructure whether this is Layer 2 based or Layer 3 based (IP) services. For each group of users we define a virtual local area network (VLAN) that is port based. And this is mainly the Layer 2 service that AIA is providing. The IP services are in the responsibility of the customer’s IT&T. According to customer needs, AIA can provide routing functionality. In that case, we allocate a unique range of private IP (generally a half class C) and we configure our routing engines to belong to the specific VLAN and simulate a default gateway. The data network is based on a Gigabit-Ethernet backbone embedded on the double optical ring of fiber cables of the airport. Through the airport data network infrastructure, each user can have at its disposal the standard industry Fast Ethernet connection of either 10 or 100 Mbps. The airport data network is connected to the Internet through two Multi-Homed Metro Ethernet connections of 400Mbps in total.
