Ireland Golf Trip – 7th to 16th August 2019 We would like to welcome you onto our Golf Tour of Ireland hosted by Jayne Ambrose. Day 1 – Wednesday, 7th August 2019 Arrival Day – Please make your own way to the hotel just outside Cork, Ballymaloe House Hotel. The drive is approx. 40 kilometres (which will take approx. 35 minutes in a taxi) from Cork Airport. Accommodation at Ballymaloe House is simple and elegant. They have a range of rooms in the main house, some large and airy with beautiful views over the fields as well as cosier rooms at the top of the house in the eaves. Their newer, light filled garden rooms are at the back of the house and look on to the river and oak and horse chestnut trees beyond. They also have charming rooms in a lime washed, rose-covered farm building in the courtyard. Enjoy afternoon tea in the drawing room by the fire or in the conservatory filled with scented geraniums and winter jasmine looking out onto our gardens and river. Benches are dotted throughout the gardens for you to sit in summer and read or listen to the sounds of the farm. In winter the drawing room is warm and peaceful-the perfect place to relax after a long walk by the sea and look out at the wild Irish sky. We will reserve a Standard Double room including breakfast daily on your behalf at the Ballymaloe House Hotel. This evening everyone will gather together for the Welcome Dinner to meet their fellow travellers. The Ballymaloe House restaurant continues to receive International recognition as home to the best modern Irish cuisine. Set deep in a 300 acre farm, the menus are written daily around the seasonal vegetables grown on the farm just as Mrs. Allen always did. Although times have changed, the essential spirit of Ballymaloe House is rooted in the relationship from the farm to the table which underlies the elegance of Irish Country House cooking. Day 2 – Thursday, 8th August 2019 After breakfast, you will be transferred to Cork Golf Club (approx. 25 km) for your first round of golf. This is considered the Premium Parkland Course in Ireland and is located at Little Island close to Cork City. This championship golf course is routed through exceptional golfing terrain incorporating old limestone quarries and the inner reaches of Cork Harbour. Day 3 – Friday, 9th August 2019 After breakfast, you will need to check out of the hotel before you will be transferred to Old Head Golf Links (approx. 75 km). Located on one of the most southern spits of land in Ireland, Old Head Golf Links is one of the world’s most dramatic settings for a Golf Course. As one of the most recognized and sought after golf experiences anywhere on earth, no trip to Ireland for golf should be complete without a round at Old Head Golf Links. Old Head Golf Links is built on a 220-acre diamond of land jutting out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The promontory is almost an island with numerous caves running beneath your feet as you play the course. Old Head, par 72, comprises five Par 5s, five Par 3s and eight Par 4s - stretches from the ladies' tees at 5,413 yards to over 7,100 yards from the tips, with a minimum of six tees per hole making it suitable for golfers of all handicap abilities. Nine holes play along the cliff tops with all eighteen holes providing unsurpassed ocean views. With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern but fair test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike. Tee times: TBA After golf, you will be transferred to The Trident Hotel in Kinsale (approx. 14km drive). The Trident Hotel is a four-star hotel, spectacularly located on the water’s edge overlooking Kinsale Harbour. All the newly refurbished bedrooms have a breathtaking view of the harbour and the enchanting town Ph: (02) 8484 2059 M: 0451 118 597 E: stuart@thegolftouringcompany.com.au W: www.thegolftouringcompany.com.au
of Kinsale. The Hotel is just 5 minutes’ walk from the “foodie capital” of Kinsale. This beautiful harbour town will have you captivated by its beautiful setting….with the long waterfront, narrow winding streets, colourful shops, galleries, cafes and picturesque bustling harbour. The Pier One Restaurant at the hotel is a member of the Kinsale Good Food Circle and is the only waterfront restaurant in the Gourmet Capital of Ireland. We will reserve a Superior Double room including breakfast daily on your behalf at the Trident Hotel. The rest of your day & evening is at your leisure. Day 4 – Saturday, 10th August 2019 After breakfast, you will need to check out of the hotel and we will head west to County Kerry. The Killarney Park Hotel is one of the finest luxury hotels Ireland has to offer, minutes from town life and nature's wonderful attractions alike. The majestic Tralee Golf Club, designed by Arnold Palmer is known as Arnold Palmer’s Jewel. This stunning setting represents a true paradise for those willing to challenge what is widely acclaimed as one of the finest links courses in the world. A little bit of Tralee GC trivia for you: The spectacular view of beach, which runs at the back of the 1st hole and to the right of 2nd hole was the location of the beach scenes of the 1970 epic movie Ryan’s Daughter, which won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography. The tower at the back of the 3rd green dates back to the 1190s, while legend has it that the big sandstone rock at the end of the wall running diagonally between the fourth and fifth fairways was hurled by the mythical Cuchullain from the top of the Sliabh Mish, the mountain that can be seen to the south. If one looks closely, what were supposed to be the imprint of his giant fingers can be seen on the boulder? The back of the 7th tee box overlooks the Randy, a small harbour that was a haven for smugglers in earlier centuries. After golf, you will be transferred back to Killarney Royal Hotel to freshen up before our special excursion this afternoon & evening to the annual Puck Fair in Killorgan (approx. 20km). The Puck Fair is one of Ireland’s oldest and longest celebrated festivals and is held without fail on 10th, 11th & 12th of August every year with 12 hours of free family street entertainment. There are many legends that suggest an origin for the Fair, many of which are typically Irish and wildly inventive, however there is not written record stating when the Fair started. The earliest written reference is from the 17th Century but evidence suggests it was something of a well-established local community event. Puck Fair – in Irish this is Aonach an Phoic, means “Fair of the He-Goat”. Every year a goatcatcher goes up into the mountains to catch a wild goat. The goat is brought back to the town and the Queen of Puck, traditionally a young school girl from one of the local primary schools, crowns him King Puck. This signifies that the festivities may begin! On the 3rd day – minus his crown – he is brought down to be led back to his mountain home. (Please note: The welfare of the goat is of utmost importance to all involved in organising Puck Fair, an event and tradition that has been in existence for more than 400 years. We have strict protocols in place to ensure this welfare and they are overseen and checked by an independent Veterinary Surgeon.) Ph: (02) 8484 2059 M: 0451 118 597 E: stuart@thegolftouringcompany.com.au W: www.thegolftouringcompany.com.au
With plenty of music, street theatre, workshops, parades, arts & craft stalls, food stalls, horse & cattle fairs and, of course, various walkabout characters wandering around, the festival is full of life and fun. Enjoy the wonderful Irish hospitality & culture for the evening and we will take you back to the hotel in Killarney later in the evening. Day 6 – Monday, 12th August 2019 After breakfast, you will check out of the Killarney Royal Hotel before we head north to the Number 1 Golf Course in Ireland Ballybunion Golf Club for a round of golf on the Old Course (approx. 65km). Like The Old Course at St. Andrew’s, Ballybunion Old Course did not require ‘much correction’ when being prepared for its first major championship event in 1937 and that nature herself could not be surpassed. That’s the essence of Ballybunion. It is elemental, natural golf amid dunes beside the ocean where all of the battles are God-made challenges with nature. Tee times: TBA. (Please Note that there are no carts available on the Old Course and electric trolleys are limited. Caddies are highly recommended) After golf, we will head east to Dublin with a stop in Limerick en route (approx. 90km) for a refreshment stop (own expenses) before you will be transferred to your hotel in Dublin - The Morrison Hotel, a DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel (approx. 205km from Limerick). The Morrison Hotel, which is set in a scenic and charming area of Dublin City overlooking the River Liffey, is a short, comfortable walk to the Temple Bar and shopping areas of Henry Street & Grafton Street. We will reserve a King Guestroom including breakfast daily on your behalf. Ph: (02) 8484 2059 M: 0451 118 597 E: stuart@thegolftouringcompany.com.au W: www.thegolftouringcompany.com.au
The rest of the evening is at your leisure. For a nice pub experience in Dublin, we recommend that you try Dublin’s oldest pub, The Brazen Head which is only a 10 minute walk from your hotel. Day 7 – Tuesday, 13th August 2019 After breakfast, you have a Day in Dublin to enjoy. We will start the day with a Half Day Tour of Dublin to get your bearings and give you and glimpse of what Dublin has to offer. Dublin is an extraordinary city to explore and there is so much to see and do. The rest of the afternoon is free for you explore on your own. We suggest that one of the best ways to get around this glorious city is on the one of the many open topped buses (green, red, yellow) to get around the city with a witty commentary along the way. Stop off at the Guinness Storehouse and learn to pull a pint of the historic Irish Stout (highly recommended, and you can opt to include the entry in your Bus Tour ticket) or Old Jameson Distillery, if whisky is more to your palate, or any one of the many museums, galleries or historic landmarks. Ph: (02) 8484 2059 M: 0451 118 597 E: stuart@thegolftouringcompany.com.au W: www.thegolftouringcompany.com.au
If Irish history interests you, we suggest that you visit historic sites such as Kilmainham Gaol (book your visit time to avoid disappointment) or Glasnevin Cemetery. Have a photo taken with the statues of Oscar Wilde or Molly Malone. Alternatively, especially if you have any Irish lineage, the new EPIC Museum is a fascinating interactive museum about the emigration worldwide of the Irish. If you’re keen on Gaelic sports, a tour of Croke Park & the GAA Museum could be of interest. Tonight, we will book tickets for a performance of Riverdance. Experience the power and passion of the incredible stage spectacular in its home town. Overnight at The Morrison Hotel in Dublin. Day 8 – Wednesday, 14th August 2019 After breakfast, you will check out of The Morrison Hotel to travel north to Northern Ireland. We will head to the beautiful County Down coast for your first round of 18 holes at Ardglass Golf Club (approx. 170km). “The view from the elevated 12th tee, with the backdrop of the Irish Sea and Mourne Mountains is to die for”, this golf course will not disappoint. The 19th hole is the oldest building used as a clubhouse in the world. Tee Times: TBA – approx. from 2pm. Ph: (02) 8484 2059 M: 0451 118 597 E: stuart@thegolftouringcompany.com.au W: www.thegolftouringcompany.com.au
After golf, you will be transferred to the hotel where you will check into the Slieve Donard Resort & Spa (approx. 20km). Nestling at the foot of the Mountains of Mourne, the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa stands in six acres of immaculate private grounds. A golden strand of beach borders one side while the mighty Royal County Down golf links frames the other. This lovingly maintained Victorian hotel is now home to one of Europe’s finest resort Spas. We will reserve a Double Classic room including breakfast daily on your behalf. The rest of your evening is at your leisure. Why not relax in the Spa in one of the pool showers or have a massage or other treatment. Day 9 – Thursday, 15th August 2019 After breakfast, make your way to the Pro Shop to check in for your final round of golf at Royal County Down Golf Club to play the Championship Links course (approx. 300m). Located in one of the most naturally beautiful links settings in Murlough Nature Reserve, against the magnificent backdrop of the Mountains of Mourne, the links stretches along the shores of Dundrum Bay offering Ph: (02) 8484 2059 M: 0451 118 597 E: stuart@thegolftouringcompany.com.au W: www.thegolftouringcompany.com.au
