Bienvenue à Montréal ! June 2019 Dear Colleagues, It is our great pleasure to welcome you in Montréal for Sunbelt XXXIX, the International Network for Social Network Analysis annual meeting. The success of this Conference lies upon the scholarly contributions of people coming from numerous disciplines and fields of study and from more than 50 countries. As organizers, we have tried to create the best showcase for all this talent. You can access an online platform that allows you to create your own program and even to download it into your agenda. We wish you will enjoy both the Conference and our city. All our team will be there to assist you - seek us out. Johanne Saint-Charles and Pierre Mongeau For the organizing team ***** A few reminders of Sunbelt tradition: • Presentations are to start and stop at the stated times as persons often hop from session to session to catch papers of interest. • If you are presenting, please load your presentation on the computer before the session starts. If you need your own laptop, test the connection before so that connecting it won’t eat into your presentation time. • If there is no named session chair, the last presenter is considered to be the session chair. • Lunch time is long enough to take a walk in the city. The Conference venue is on Sainte- Catherine street, the main commercial artery of Montréal – don’t try to walk it all at lunch time as it stretches for 11.2 km! But, walking a few streets west you will find the Quartier des spectacles, while a few streets east will bring you to the Village. • Should you need to reach us while not on site, here is the phone number for the Conference: +1 (514) 264-7479 4
Around the Conference Internet connexion – WiFi Free Wi-Fi is offered by UQAM to all participants at the conference venue. Network: Visiteurs UQAM User name: asunbelt2019 Password: DQ32fK23 EDUROAM is also available everywhere in all UQAM Buildings. Hospitality Suite (Ginkgo Bar - DS Building) The Hospitality Suite is a long-standing tradition of Sunbelt. There is a Hospitality Suite Wednesday through Saturday evening from 9 p.m. to 12 midnight. Hospitality Suite is an informal occasion to meet and chat with colleagues. Coupons giving access to free drinks will be distributed at the door upon presentation of your name tag. Cocktail Dînatoire (Banquet) — Centre de design DE-R200 (Room opens at 19:30) During the cocktail dinner, live jazz musicians will perform while various appetizers and drinks will be served. We will ensure vegetarian options and intend to do our best to consider and adjust as much as possible to major dietary requirements or allergies. We will also make sure that it is possible for you to be informed of the content of each appetizer. The price for the cocktail dinner includes food (the number of appetizers will be estimated to equate a regular meal) and beverages (including wine). 5
Sunbelt activities location and parking (Map) The main Conference activities will all take place around the Pavillon J.-A. DeSève (DS Building) of the Université du Québec à Montréal. This building is located right next to the metro station Berri- UQAM. There is a few parking near the site. 6
Sunbelt 2019 as an Eco-Responsible Event To make a small gesture for our planet, we are committed to classify the Sunbelt 2019 Conference as a level 2 eco-responsible event. Levels of eco-responsible events are defined and prescribed by the responsible event management standards of the Bureau de normalisation du Québec, BNQ 9700-253. This certification demonstrates that the Conference meets the rigorous requirements of an eco- responsible event in Québec. To achieve the level 2 standard, environmental measures have been implemented with regard to: the selection of suppliers; management of materials, energy and water; waste management; food selection; and transportation selection. INSNA 2019 gratefully acknowledges the Réseau des femmes en environnement for its valuable support in the eco-responsible planning of the Conference. Green Initiatives Adopted for Sunbelt 2019 Conference Below are a few examples of the initiatives we have taken for the Conference • Choice of a Conference venue easily accessible by public transportation with easy access to the city main attractions. • Adoption of awareness-raising measures aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by travels. • Accommodation proposals, for out-of-town participants, less than 15 min walk from the Conference venue. • Most of the selected establishments participate in the Quebec Green Key program of the Hotel Association of Canada (HAC). (Click here for more information about the program). • Online registrations and communication. • Double-sided and recycled paper for printing of key documents. • Post-event online evaluation. • Filling station for reusable water bottles. • Local, organic and bulk products favored. • Composting stations for food waste. • Donation of leftover food to a local food bank. • Recycling stations (paper, glass, and plastic). • Priority given to local, non-profit suppliers, with sustainable development policy and offering training program, pay equity or equality in employment for their employees. You Can Help 7
Here are suggestions of what you can do to help reduce the environmental footprint of the event. We thank you in advance for your valuable contribution! In matters of transportation (see detailed information on the page Transportation & Accommodation): • From the airport use the shuttle service (747 bus line). • Use public transportation, bicycle or walk to get to the Conference venue. • Use BIXI (bike-sharing service) or rent a bike for the duration of your stay in Montréal. • If you live near Montréal – think of taking the train rather than the plane (it’s a lot more fun, anyway). In matters of food and accommodation (see detailed information on the page Transportation & Accommodation): • Choose a hotel located close to the Conference venue. • Turn off the lights when you leave your room. • Eat at local restaurants. • Choose vegetarian meals. • Ask for reusable dishes instead of disposable containers and utensils. • Ask to use the same sheets and towels for a few days to save water and energy • Choose products with little packaging. At the conference venue: • Use recycling bins. • Put organic matter in the composting bins. • Bring and use a reusable mug for your beverages. • Turn off the lights when you are the last to leave a conference room. *Many people are sensitive to perfumes, colognes, aftershaves and other scented products. Please refrain from wearing them at any time during the Conference. Thank you. 8
Discover Montreal Montréal is a great city to visit (before or after the Conference, of course!). Montréal is the only francophone metropolis in North America - a fact that does not preclude diversity. Indeed, Montréal is also the most bilingual (French-English) metropolis in the North American continent and, in this city of close to 2 million people, there are nearly 80 different languages spoken. Things to do in Montréal are numerous – especially in summer where festivals and celebrations abound, to know more, visit www.mtl.org. You can also have a look at the Tourism Montréal’s Official Tourist Guide online. The Guide offers mapped neighborhood-by-neighborhood tours of the city and information on shopping, restaurants, guided tours and more.
