Rebuilding my “67” Cub Cadet 122
I am going to start this story off with that I did not need another project! Back in February 2018, I was browsing
the internet and was looking at the Facebook “Snow Fighters” page and saw that someone had posted an ad for
a Cub Cadet Model 122. I saved the Facebook “post” so I could check it later to see how the sale was going.
Remember, I did not need another project. I still have my 1940 Farmall B that I bought a few years ago from
Chapter member Bill Robinson. Since I parted with my beloved 1949 Farmall C for a Ford Dump Truck, I
figured it was time to rebuild the “B”. Well that was taking quite a long time and I still have not finished it yet.
Back to the 122 story! I had noticed on the saved Facebook post that the asking price was $500.00 and included
a Cub Cadet snow thrower which was mounted on the tractor. This was on a Thursday. The weekend went by
and Monday morning I checked the post again and the seller had added that there was a mower deck and snow
plow blade available. Now with the recent snow storms, the snow has been wet and heavy and my new snow
blower just was not working that well. It would just cough out the heavy snow and not throw it! I started
thinking that a small tractor with a snow plow blade might be a good idea for snow removal since my beloved
Farmall “C” had a plow blade which I don’t have anymore.

I contacted the seller on Monday morning through Facebook and asked if the Cub cadet was still for sale. He
replied back that it was. I sent a couple more messages with questions like if it was still $500.00 and if the
mower and plow blade were still available. They were but the separate implements were $50.00 each. I could
have the whole package for $600.00. I replied back to him and told him to hold it for me and I would be right
down. My son and I hooked up the trailer and headed to Sturbridge MA where the tractor was located. When we
arrived at the guy’s yard, it was very muddy and we looked at the tractor. He had to find a battery and when he
did, the tractor fired right up. We drove the tractor onto the trailer, loaded up the mower deck and plow blade
and headed back to Pepperell. Now I had another project to work on!

The tractor had a cab on it when I bought it as you can see in the photo of the tractor on the trailer but I did not
care for the cab. I believe that it was purchased locally but it did not mount correctly on the cadet. The back of
the cab was bolted on but the front just rode on the hood and was secured with bungie cords. That made it
difficult to tilt the hood to add gas and oil. So the hood was scrapped. It even came with side and rear curtains!
After we got the tractor home, I started looking for part numbers and serial numbers on the cadet and
implements so I could determine the year of manufacture and models. We tried out the snow blower on the
cadet after a moderate snow storm left a few inches on the ground. The snow was wet and heavy and after a
couple of passes with the cadet and snow blower, the belt gave out and that was it for the snow blower. The belt
looked like it could have been original from 1967! The blower also did not work well with the wet snow.

Around April of 2018, we removed the snow blower and try to mount the plow blade which I then determined
that I either had the wrong mount or wrong plow blade for the tractor. It wasn’t until late May 2019 that I
started to strip down the tractor for rebuilding and painting. I pulled the motor off the chassis in early spring
2019. I did not rebuild the motor but I did clean it up and painted the motor off the cadet. In April, I started to
sand blast the chassis and frame with the wheels still mounted so I could move the tractor around.

Now it’s almost June and I have plans to head to Bloomsburg PA and attend the National Red Power Roundup
to be held on the weekend of June 29th. I have been doing some rebuilding of the 1940 Farmall B but in no way
will it be anywhere close to being completed by the RPRU!. I figured I better get my butt in gear and finish the
Cub Cadet so I can take something to the convention to display. By June 14th, the tractor frame was sandblasted
and bare. The tires were off and the frame sitting on blocks. 2 weeks to show time. June 17th and the frame was
primed. The next day on June 18th, the frame was painted yellow. On June 19th, the wheels were painted and
International Harvester Collectors Club - New England
installed and the motor was put back on the tractor. By Monday, June 24th, the tractor was complete, hood
installed, seat installed and the tractor was started for the first time in over a year. The rebuild was complete! On
Tuesday, the Cub Cadet was loaded on my trailer along with Kim Spaulding’s Cub for the trip to Bloomsburg!

As I mentioned earlier in the story, I got the snow blower, snow plow and mower deck with the cadet. After I
got back from RPRU I started to work on the mower. It was a 42-inch deck and it had several rust holes on the
deck. I sand blasted the deck and on my way to the Power of the Red show in August, I dropped off the deck
with a friend who was going to patch and weld the holes. On Saturday morning at Dublin, I walked around
browsing the flea market area and noticed some Cub Cadet parts including a 38-inch mower deck with new
blades and no holes! After paying $80.00 for the deck, I took that home, sand blasted and painted the deck and
that’s what’s on the tractor now. I just scrapped the other deck after removing the pulleys. As for the snow
plow, my buddy welded some ears on the push arms for the plow and now it mounts just fine on the tractor and
got a workout this past winter with the few storms we had. The tractor also came with wheel weights and tire
chains which was a great help in snow plowing,

That’s it for this story. I hope you did not find it too boring. I think that I got a great bargain at $600.00 and I
am very happy that I decided that I needed one more project to work on!!

See you at a show! Gary Munsey

President’s Message
As you all know, 2020 has been a different year. The vast majority of shows have been
cancelled and I for one have missed them.

Because of this year’s situation, we decided to cancel the chapter banquet scheduled for this
month. Even though we had the room and the food vendor was willing to do the work, it just
was not possible to comply with all of the regulations set forth by the state of Massachusetts.
It really was our only choice. Since there is no banquet, there will be no membership meeting
and no election of directors. The chapter directors serve 3-year terms with 2 or 3 elected each
year. Our bylaws do not cover the situation when there is no membership meeting. We
decided to continue with the current slate of directors until there can be a membership
meeting. Hopefully this meeting will occur next spring in Connecticut. I have talked with other
organizations like ours and this solution is common.

Another fallout from the lack of shows and events is that the chapter membership number is
down. Over 75 members have not renewed for 2021. Normally there are about half that
many members who do not renew. My thinking is that this is due mostly to the fact that with
no shows, members did not remember to renew even though a reminder was mailed out to all
members. I fully expect that we will get most of these members back and we will be fine.
Financially we are in good shape. Fortunately, we were able to cut back on our expenses and
hang on to the funds we do have.

I hope all of you and yours are safe and surviving well during this pandemic. One good thing is
that I have had time to get some work done around the house and work on my tractor projects
too! I hope many of you have had the same opportunity. Have a good fall!
