Spring • Summer Issue 2021 CYCLING FOR CARE 500KM COMPLETED IN A MONTH I n May 2020, Lisa Ashton completed a 500km road cycling challenge to raise money for St Barnabas Hospice in memory of her dad, Brian Waterall. Brian was age 66 when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and he sadly died in May 2016, just six months later. MAY BITTERSWEET WIN A GIFT AFTER SO MUCH HEARTACHE H elen Sharman’s husband, Chris, sadly died in our Inpatient Unit in April 2020, after living with prostate cancer for two years. She had joined the St Barnabas Lottery many years ago, not knowing that the Hospice would end up caring for Chris. JUNE HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US! LOOKING BACK AT OUR 38TH BIRTHDAY AND #GOYELLOW CELEBRATIONS A lthough our 38th birthday isn’t a big milestone, we wanted to give the people of Lincolnshire a reason to celebrate during such difficult times. We are proud to say we achieved that with #GoYellow in 2020! The support from local businesses, communities, the media and our wonderful staff and volunteers was simply incredible, and we felt a real sense of togetherness as everyone spread a little sunshine for St Barnabas. In total, we raised an amazing £1,540 from our birthday celebrations. 14
Spring • Summer Issue 2021 A GENEROUS GIFT LOTTERY WINNER DONATES MONEY BACK M rs R joined the St Barnabas Hospice Lottery in June 2012, shortly after her husband, Barry, died age 79. Last May, she received a phone call from our Lottery team to let her know that she was the lucky winner of our £2,500 rollover prize! Mrs R said, “Barry had terminal cancer and wanted about what I would do to spend the last days of with it. I chose to split it his life at home with his five ways between myself family around him. Spring • Summer Issue 2021 CHEERS TO OUR SUPPORTERS GIN PURCHASES HELP THE HOSPICE W e would like to say “cheers” to all the wonderful supporters who purchased our limited-edition gin made in partnership with Bottomley Distillers, the creators of Pin Gin, last year. Our gin, Est. 1982 Bramble, featured notes of blackberry and cherry and all profits from each bottle (£14) went directly to the Hospice. In total, an incredible 330 bottles were sold, generating £4,623.88 for the Hospice! Because this partnership was so successful, we are delighted to be working with Bottomley Distillers once again this year and are currently working on a new flavour. More information will be announced on this in due course. In other gin-related plans, our popular Gin and Jammies will take place once again this year and we hope to have something special for local businesses to get involved with too. 35
