Rules and Procedures Discipline It is the policy and practice of Norfolk Public Schools and Ingleside Elementary School to operate safe, secure, and orderly schools. In accordance with this policy, the School Board has approved, and the administration has implemented the rules and procedures contained in a pamphlet entitled Standards of Student Conduct Handbook. Your child will receive a copy of this pamphlet which must be read and discussed with your child. In addition to the districts Code of Conduct, the following behavior expectations will support the school- wide discipline plan at Ingleside: Dress Code We are a uniform school. Scholars must wear khaki bottoms and green tops every day of the week, Monday through Friday when in person school resumes. We will have school “dress down” days when the principal deems it so. Scholars may then choose what to wear as long as they adhere to the dress code outlined in the Norfolk Public Schools Standard of Student Conduct Handbook. Be Respectable, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. The teacher has the authority and responsibility to maintain discipline consistent with school policy. It is important to maintain a learning environment where all scholars can learn. When problems arise related to behavior, the teacher will first attempt to solve the problem with the scholar. Should this not prove successful, then the teacher will seek your assistance either through a phone call or a parent zoom conference. Serious and persistent offenses will be referred to school administration for disciplinary action. We need you as a cooperative parent, to work with us in shaping the social and citizenship patterns of the scholars at Ingleside Elementary as they learn self-discipline. This helps us to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for all scholars. Ingleside Parent/Student Handbook 2021 Page 10 of 26

Social Emotional Strategies for Parents Social and Emotional Learning: Strategies for Parents (Article Excerpt)1 Be a good listener. • Be interested and attentive when your child is speaking. • Encourage talking. Ask your child what they are learning is class. • Listen patiently. Remember children have a more limited vocabulary than adults. It may take them a little longer to get their message across. • Hear children out. Try not to interrupt your child when they are speaking. Encourage them to share their opinions. • Listen to nonverbal messages. Pay attention to how your child is acting such as posture, energy level, and behavior patterns. 2 Model the behavior you seek. Whether it's apologizing when you're in the wrong or treating others with respect and kindness, children learn a great deal about relationships from observing the behavior of their parents. In the words of Maurice Elias, co-author of two books on emotionally intelligent parenting, parents should remember the "24K Golden Rule: We should always think about the impact of our actions on kids, and be as particular in what we do with our kids as we would want others to be with our kids." Check out an Edutopia interview with Elias about the role of social and emotional learning at home, as well as a video of him talking about why SEL should be an integral part of academic life. Elias is also a regular blogger for Edutopia on the topic of social and emotional learning. Nurture your scholar's self-esteem. A child with a good sense of self is happier, well-adjusted, and does better in school. Strategies for fostering self-esteem include giving your child responsibilities, allowing her to make age-appropriate choices, and showing your appreciation for a job well done. Respect differences. Every child has his or her own unique talents and abilities. Whether in academics, athletics, or interpersonal relationships, resist the urge to compare your child to friends or siblings. Instead, honor your child's accomplishments and provide support and encouragement for the inevitable challenges he faces. Take advantage of support services. Seek the advice and support of school counselors or other social services during times of family crisis, such as a divorce or the death of a close friend or family member. Remember that no matter how close you are to your child; they may be more comfortable discussing a troubling family situation with another trusted adult. 1 https://www.edutopia.org/social-emotional-learning-parent-resources 2 https://www.familyeducation.com/school/listening/how-can-parents-model-good-listening-skills Ingleside Parent/Student Handbook 2021 Page 22 of 26
