INFORMATION ON THE ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS FOR THE CLC LAW CONFERENCE 2021 HISTORICAL INFORMATION: The Bahamas an archipelagic country with unique and striking characteristics, comprises of 700 islands, rocks and cays, 30 of which are inhabited. The name Bahamas is of Lucayan derivation, although some historians believe it is from Spanish ‘bajamar,’ meaning “shallow water.” The Bahamian climate which is one of the greatest attractions, is mild throughout the year, with temperatures varying from the low 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter to the low 80s during the summer. The Bahamian climate seldom drops below 60 degrees or reaches a high of 90 degrees or more. The Bahamian people are humble and hospitable in nature. The majority of which are descendants from the African slaves who were transported from Africa by the Europeans. The Bahamas has a rich history and colorful culture unlike anywhere in the world. The Bahamian culture can be described as an amalgam of African, British and American influences. The African culture is vividly expressed through the celebration of Junkanoo, a festival that is held annually during the months of December and January. ATTRACTIONS AND THINGS TO DO: Swimming with the pigs is one experience you simply cannot miss while you are here. Wondering how the pigs got to Pig Beach? We do not know for sure. Big Major Cay is un-inhabited, and the pigs are not native to the island. Some say they were left by a group of sailors, who planned to come back and cook them. Or that the pigs swam over from a shipwreck nearby. Wherever they came from, there are now about 20 pigs and piglets living the easy life, with daily visits from Bahamians and tourists. When you visit, be sure to get a selfie with the #swimmingpigs—they are even cuter in person.
Island hopping through the islands of Exuma is truly an extraordinary experience. Among other popular and activities are to snorkel a plane wreck, charter a boat to explore un-inhabited cays, protected coves and secret sandbars. The iconic and popular glass window bridge will stop you in your tracks, as it is quite the stunning scene. You will be stunned by how the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean meet the turquoise Bight of Eleuthera. You can take a surf at Surfer’s Beach. Located on the North End of Eleuthera, a two-mile stretch of white sand attracts serious surfers with powerful, sometimes shoulder-high waves. You can also visit Ocean Hole which is located on the Southern edge of Rock Sound in South Eleuthera. Furthermore, you can explore Queen’s Bath, located South of the Glass Window Bridge. The Queen’s Bath is a rocky collection of natural pools, formed by centuries of crashing waves.
