2021 Virtual Data Challenge

(IBEC) in UNB Fredericton’s faculty of management, our Data Visualization 10

It began as an in-class competition five years ago when the Date
Visualization course was first piloted during summer session. The City of
Fredericton provided data sets for students to work with as they applied
their learning from the class to present actionable insights. The response
from students and local business leaders was overwhelmingly positive and Analytics
within a few months, the faculty of management was hosting the Data 11
Challenge as part of the Annual Gov Maker Conference.
 Since 2018 the Data Visualization Challenge has been a stand-alone

 competition, attracting student competitors from across Atlantic
 Canada and other parts of the country. Businesses and
 Team Education/Career Backgrounds
 municipalities across New Brunswick have contributed by providing
 data sets and sponsorships; and industry leaders from across
 Business 11 Atlantic Canada have served as judges and mentors.

 SPRINT
 This year we’ve expanded the challenge to include competitions in
 Analytics 6 Data Analytics and Data Sprint, in addition to Data Visualization
 Other* 5 competition. While the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to go
 Engineering 3 virtual, we are excited to be hosting 93 participants in 38 teams,
 from eight countries, including five Canadian provinces;

DATA ANALYTICS OVERVIEW

Welcome to the first-edition of the Data Analytics competition. Teams have a

choice of using 1 of the 13 StatsCan COVID-19-theme data sets. Teams must
show all the steps, tests, justifications, and decisions they took to arrive at their
insight/prediction. They must be able to explain to a lay person these steps in a
clear and concise manner.

The goal is to:
 • Wrangle data sets so they can be used for analysis
 • Select the appropriate statistical techniques to apply to your analyses,
 including conducting appropriate tests
 • Correctly interpret the results
 • Provide predictions and insights to decision makers

Welcome to the first-edition of the Data Sprint competition. This fun

 OVERVIEW
hackathon-style competition will require teams to query data with speed,
accuracy, and creativity.

There is no preparation required as the questions will be provided on the
morning of the event (Mar. 11, 2021) itself. All participants will need to

Please note: Wikidata only hosts public information. Not all the information on
Wikipedia is available on Wikidata. Wikidata is an accessible way to search and
present data and has about 92 million data items, 26,000 active users, and

Berend has a master’s in social economics from Utrecht University since 1999
and used his analytic knowledge first professionally to create a spatial model
that would identify revenue streams stemming from nature. In 2007 he
expected to use a similar model to further facilitate the transition to
renewable energy sources in the Netherlands. Working with the grid
operator he lost his heart to the lean methodology, became a black belt lean
consultant and designed and developed many dashboards and Kanban

boards. The introduction of smart metering brought him back into the
realms of the more hard core analytics.

In 2018 he and his family moved to Fredericton, to enjoy nature, beautiful
scenery and the overall quality of life that is offered by the province. He

Land Information Secretariat, Service New Brunswick (SNB)

Bernie is a graduate of UNB’s Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering
program and a professional engineer. He has worked in geomatics since
1987. Bernie joined the NB Civil service in 1997 with the Department of
Environment and moved to SNB in 2008 specifically to work on the GeoNB

data on behalf of the Government of New Brunswick.

career to building the region's tech capacity. Most recently, she was the

privately held IT firms in the region with clients throughout North America.

Cathy is a leader in the movement to use technology and innovation to
drive economic growth, create thriving communities and engage citizens.
She champions this evolution as Chair of the New Brunswick Innovation

Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit corporation that invests in new
growth-oriented companies and applied research activities. Her current
work is an extension of her role as one of the co-founders of PropelICT,
Atlantic Canada’s original tech accelerator, and she continues to mentor

New Brunswick, Canada and is currently Chair of the Computer Science
Department in Saint John. He has 20 years of expertise with Biomedical

Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science and Engineering) from NIT, Trichy.

Previously, I worked for a number of years as a software engineer, in companies
including, Oracle, Lucent Technologies (Bell Labs), and Webtech Wireless. I also
