COMPETITION OVERVIEW 2021 Virtual Data Challenge OVERVIEW Teams Competing Coordinated by the International Business and Entrepreneurship Centre Sprint (IBEC) in UNB Fredericton’s faculty of management, our Data Visualization 10 Challenge has come a long way! Visualization 17 VISUALIZATION It began as an in-class competition five years ago when the Date Visualization course was first piloted during summer session. The City of Fredericton provided data sets for students to work with as they applied their learning from the class to present actionable insights. The response from students and local business leaders was overwhelmingly positive and Analytics within a few months, the faculty of management was hosting the Data 11 Challenge as part of the Annual Gov Maker Conference. Since 2018 the Data Visualization Challenge has been a stand-alone ANALYTICS competition, attracting student competitors from across Atlantic Canada and other parts of the country. Businesses and Team Education/Career Backgrounds municipalities across New Brunswick have contributed by providing data sets and sponsorships; and industry leaders from across Business 11 Atlantic Canada have served as judges and mentors. Computer Science 8 SPRINT This year we’ve expanded the challenge to include competitions in Analytics 6 Data Analytics and Data Sprint, in addition to Data Visualization Other* 5 competition. SCHEDULE (1/2) Competition Rounds OVERVIEW The competition is open to the public to join and watch teams compete. Kindly refer to online instructions to join the competition on page 6. March 11 March 12 VISUALIZATION ANALYTICS The Data Sprint Wikidata hackathon begins in the morning The presentation-round for the Data Visualization and Data followed by presentations to judges in the afternoon. DATA VISUALIZATION OVERVIEW Welcome to the fifth-edition of the Data Visualization competition. Teams are OVERVIEW welcome any open data sets that are publicly available, however they must use data that fits at least one of the 17 topics of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Check out these excellent open-data sources. DATA ANALYTICS OVERVIEW Welcome to the first-edition of the Data Analytics competition. Teams have a OVERVIEW choice of using 1 of the 13 StatsCan COVID-19-theme data sets. Teams must show all the steps, tests, justifications, and decisions they took to arrive at their insight/prediction. They must be able to explain to a lay person these steps in a clear and concise manner. VISUALIZATION The goal is to: • Wrangle data sets so they can be used for analysis • Select the appropriate statistical techniques to apply to your analyses, including conducting appropriate tests • Correctly interpret the results • Provide predictions and insights to decision makers ANALYTICS Presentation Category 9 AM - 3 PM Each team will be required to present their insights to a panel of judges using any software, such as Jupyter Notebook, PowerPoint, or in SPSS or STATA. Participants will need to share their screen on Microsoft Teams and present to a panel of judges. It is not necessary for all team members to present. DATA SPRINT OVERVIEW (1/2) Welcome to the first-edition of the Data Sprint competition. This fun OVERVIEW hackathon-style competition will require teams to query data with speed, accuracy, and creativity. There is no preparation required as the questions will be provided on the morning of the event (Mar. 11, 2021) itself. All participants will need to VISUALIZATION know SPARQL and will be required to run queries on Wikidata. Please note: Wikidata only hosts public information. Not all the information on Wikipedia is available on Wikidata. Wikidata is an accessible way to search and present data and has about 92 million data items, 26,000 active users, and nearly 7.5 million queries run per day. Learn more about Wikidata here ANALYTICS Running Queries 8-10 AM All teams will be provided a list of questions of varying complexity which need to be answered as queries on WikiData. They must answer as many questions as they can by 10 50% am. Of total score SPRINT Theme-based Queries 10-12 PM A common theme will be announced to all the teams. DATA SPRINT OVERVIEW (2/2) Wikidata is a powerful tool that can query and present data among other OVERVIEW functionalities. Teams will create queries that can be represented in different ways. Below are some examples of what to expect during the presentations. Please note: The below examples are from Dr. Chris Baker's courses CS3983 & CS3553 at UNB Saint John. The queries (SPARQL) have not been disclosed. VISUALIZATION The question and the query displayed using the Wikidata functions have been showcased. JUDGE OVERVIEW Andrew Lockhart VISUALIZATION Andrew Lockhart is the Economic Development Specialist with Ignite Fredericton. Andrew is accountable for the economic development and growth of the Fredericton Region through strategic initiatives and direct business development activities that result in new companies starting, expanding or locating to the region. ANALYTICS Andrew studied political science at St. Thomas University, and has a master’s in business administration from the University of New Brunswick. Prior to joining the team at Ignite, Andrew worked for the Government of New Brunswick, St. Thomas University, and the International Business and Entrepreneurship Centre (IBEC). SPRINT JUDGES
ADVISORY COMMITTEE OVERVIEW Andra Waagmeester VISUALIZATION Andra is a biomedical informatician by training. He currently resides in Belgium, where .he works on modelling data as linked - and/or FAIR data. Primarily for biomedical research knowledge and data, but Andra is also active in data projects modelling data for cultural heritage and biodiversity. Andra participates in the Gene Wiki project [1-2], which is a project that aims at making Wikidata a hub for linked life- ANALYTICS science data. SPRINT JUDGES
JUDGE OVERVIEW Angela Pyne VISUALIZATION With more than a decade of leading corporate marketing initiatives, Angela is a motivated and dynamic marketing professional with bold ideas, exciting strategies, and meaningful storytelling. Angela's current focus is on leading the NBIF brand, marketing and public relations shop. Sharing their story is what drives her to do great work every ANALYTICS day. JUDGE OVERVIEW Asif Hasan VISUALIZATION Asif is co-founder and CEO of SimpTek. He is honoured to be leading an incredibly passionate team of people who solve critical problems in the energy sector with the vision to become the most trusted provider of products and services that make energy efficiency and sustainability simple for everyone. Born in Bangladesh, educated in India, Asif chose Fredericton, Canada as his home while studying Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New ANALYTICS Brunswick. Asif believes that resilience, determination, creativity, and teamwork are critical for a strong leader and essential to overcome life’s challenges. He is active in his community as a Dialogue Community Leader and Board member of Dialogue New Brunswick. He is currently leading the Lost Votes Campaign, a campaign working to allow permanent residents to vote in municipal elections in SPRINT New Brunswick. He also co-chaired the City of Fredericton's current 5 year Immigration Strategy. Last year, he was recognized as one of the Top 50 CEOs of Atlantic Canada. JUDGES
JUDGE OVERVIEW Berend van Middendorp VISUALIZATION Berend has a master’s in social economics from Utrecht University since 1999 and used his analytic knowledge first professionally to create a spatial model that would identify revenue streams stemming from nature. In 2007 he expected to use a similar model to further facilitate the transition to renewable energy sources in the Netherlands. Working with the grid operator he lost his heart to the lean methodology, became a black belt lean consultant and designed and developed many dashboards and Kanban ANALYTICS boards. The introduction of smart metering brought him back into the realms of the more hard core analytics. In 2018 he and his family moved to Fredericton, to enjoy nature, beautiful scenery and the overall quality of life that is offered by the province. He started in 2019 with NB Power as information analyst and helps setting up an SPRINT analytic practice within NB Power. JUDGES
JUDGE OVERVIEW Bernie Connors VISUALIZATION Bernie Connors, P.Eng., Geomatics Engineer Land Information Secretariat, Service New Brunswick (SNB) Bernie is a graduate of UNB’s Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering program and a professional engineer. He has worked in geomatics since 1987. Bernie joined the NB Civil service in 1997 with the Department of Environment and moved to SNB in 2008 specifically to work on the GeoNB ANALYTICS project. Bernie manages the distribution of terabytes of open geomatics data on behalf of the Government of New Brunswick. SPRINT JUDGES
PANEL MODERATOR OVERVIEW Cathy Simpson VISUALIZATION Cathy Simpson is an Atlantic Canadian IT leader who has dedicated her career to building the region's tech capacity. Most recently, she was the Vice President, People and Culture with T4G Limited, one of the largest privately held IT firms in the region with clients throughout North America. Cathy is a leader in the movement to use technology and innovation to drive economic growth, create thriving communities and engage citizens. She champions this evolution as Chair of the New Brunswick Innovation ANALYTICS Foundation, an independent, not-for-profit corporation that invests in new growth-oriented companies and applied research activities. Her current work is an extension of her role as one of the co-founders of PropelICT, Atlantic Canada’s original tech accelerator, and she continues to mentor and advise start-up entrepreneurs in the region. She also sits on the board SPRINT of Enterprise Saint John. Dr. Baker is inventor of 2 patents filed with the USPTO and has published 90 papers in journals and conference proceedings. He holds a full professorship at the University of New Brunswick, Canada and is currently Chair of the Computer Science Department in Saint John. He has 20 years of expertise with Biomedical Informatics, Data Integration and Interoperability. In 2016 he was finalist for the Canadian Open Data Leader of the year and shortlisted for the ANALYTICS 2017 New Brunswick Bioscience Achievement Award. In 2019 his research team was awarded first prize for Outstanding Research Articles in Bio- surveillance by International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS). SPRINT JUDGES
JUDGE OVERVIEW Codanda Appachu VISUALIZATION Codanda Appachu is a Staff Software Engineer and Technical Lead of the Data Platforms team at Flatiron Health, a health care and cancer research technology company based in New York City. On the Data Platforms team he helps build systems and tools to help explore, discover and find meaning in data. His experience engineering data and related systems spans several industries including imaging, e- commerce and health care. He holds a Masters degree in Electrical ANALYTICS Engineering and Computer Science from University of California, Berkeley and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from The City College of New York. JUDGE OVERVIEW Jenna Evans VISUALIZATION Jenna holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (Honors in Marketing) from the University of New Brunswick and is an MBA Candidate at the Faculty of Business at the University of New Brunswick. Jenna was a participant in the 2019 APEX business plan competition and placed first with her team. As a Project Manager with Stiletto Consulting, Jenna takes a leadership role in select projects ensuring coordination across multiple channels until a project’s completion. JUDGE OVERVIEW Julie McKay VISUALIZATION Julie McKay is the manager of Land Information Infrastructure Secretariat at Service New Brunswick and graduated from the University of New Brunswick’ s Department of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering. She has had numerous roles in her 20 years at Service New Brunswick, with the long term goal of developing a spatial data infrastructure for New Brunswick. This is being accomplished through collaboration with federal, provincial and municipal partners, creating authoritative data and standards while reducing duplication and costs. The geospatial data, map services and applications are made available on GeoNB and are available for ANALYTICS everyone to use, develop applications and perform analysis based on an unrestricted open data licence. PANELLIST OVERVIEW Justin Kamerman VISUALIZATION Justin leads Instnt's Product and Engineering groups - responsible for the definition and delivery of the product and platform roadmap. He has over 20 years experience designing and building high performance distributed systems in the telecommunications, IPTV, identity verification, social media analytics, and IIoT industries. JUDGE OVERVIEW Pierre-Andre Fruytier VISUALIZATION Bilingual strategy and operations professional, Pierre-Andre Fruytier has more than 20 years of international general management and consulting experience in manufacturing/processing, distribution/retail, construction/maintenance, and logistics/transportation. In addition to his engineering background in applied mathematics and aerospace, he is also an MBA graduate from the Harvard Business School, and a certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt. He started his career at ANALYTICS Caterpillar in Europe as a supervisor of an assembly line, then worked in marketing for Europe, Africa, and Middle East, eventually for Central Purchasing in Europe. ADVISORY COMMITTEE OVERVIEW Suprio Ray VISUALIZATION I am an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. I lead the Big Data Systems and Analytics Lab. I received my Ph.D. from the Computer Science Department, University of Toronto. I obtained an M.Sc. (Computer Science) from University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Science and Engineering) from NIT, Trichy. Previously, I worked for a number of years as a software engineer, in companies including, Oracle, Lucent Technologies (Bell Labs), and Webtech Wireless. I am interested in various aspects of Big Data management, including the management of spatial and spatio-temporal data, as well as, various analytical workloads. Prior to the Ocean Supercluster, Susan managed collaborative research programs for Canada’s offshore sector, was an Atlantic Canadian ocean tech company executive, established Mitacs in Newfoundland and Labrador, and was a Prototype Development Manager and a Naval Architect in the US.
