General!information!and!time!schedule! ! At!the!end!of!their!bachelor!training,!students!finish!their!education!with!a!3]month!bachelor! project!starting!in!April.!The!project!may!be!started!at!an!earlier!date,!extending!the!duration!to! 4!of!5!months!(respectively!18,!24!or!30!EC)!after!permission!from!the!Examinations!Board.!The! knowledge!and!skills!gained!during!the!bachelor!study!will!be!used!in!a!largely!independently! conducted!research!project.!The!project!starts!with!the!writing!of!a!research!proposal!and!ends! with!the!writing!of!a!report!in!the!form!of!an!academic!publication!and!an!oral!presentation.!A! daily!supervisor!of!the!involved!department!is!responsible!for!the!conducted!research!and!the! assessment!of!the!whole!project.!If!the!daily!supervisor!is!not!a!member!!of!UvA!staff!(i.e.!a!PhD! student!somebody!from!outside!the!UvA,!!a!second!assessor!will!assess!the!same!aspects!as!the!! daily!supervisor.!!Finally!an!FNWI!appointed!examiner!will!assess!the!written!report.!!" Planning) The!bachelor!project!is!scheduled!between!the!beginning!of!April!and!the!beginning!of!July.!the! Student!are!expected!to!work!full]time!on!the!project.!Extended!projects!will!start!in!February!or! March.!The!general!outline!of!the!entire!bachelor!project!is!shown!in!table!1!and!includes! regular!moments!for!feedback!on!student!progress.!Ultimately,!the)student)is)responsible)for)the) time)management)and)must)make)appointments)with)the)daily)supervisor)to)receive)feedback.!During!the! internship,!the!student!will!be!trained!to!design!and!perform!a!research!project.!The!student!is! expected!to!take!the!initiative!when!needed,!and!shows!a!proactive!attitude!throughout!the! project.! ! The!first!three!weeks!are!spend!reading!literature,!possibly!doing!pilot!experiments,!and! writing!a!research!proposal.!Oral!presentations!of!the!proposal!will!take!place!in!the!fourth! week.!Following!the!presentation!the!student!plans!a!feedback!moment!with!the!daily! supervisor!to!discusses!the!outline!and!further!planning!of!the!project!and!the!grade!for!the! presentation!given!by!the!jury.!The!daily!supervisor!will!also!grade!the!research!proposal!and! provide!feedback!to!the!student.!For!projects!outside!of!the!FNWI,!the!second!assessor!is! preferably!present!at!this!feedback!session.!If!this!is!not!possible,!there!should!be!some!other! form!of!exchange!between!the!second!assessor,!the!student!and!the!daily!supervisor!to!discuss! the!progress!the!student!has!made!so!far.!The!assessment!model!will!be!used!as!guideline!for! In!week!7,!the!student!submits!a!first!draft!of!the!research!report!to!the!daily!supervisor.!This! will!be!directly!followed!(week!8)!by!a!second!round!of!feedback,!again!organised!by!the! student.!As!in!the!previous!feedback!session,!tables!2!and!3!can!be!used!to!discuss!the!practical! work!and!the!use!of!a!lab!journal.!This!feedback!session!provides!the!student!with!a!status! update!on!his/her!work!and!points!out!aspects!of!the!work!that!could!still!be!improved.! Following!the!discussion!with!the!supervisor!(and!for!external!supervised!projects!preferably!! also!the!second!assessor),!the!student!again!writes!a!self!evaluation!report!which!is!also! submitted!to!Blackboard,!following!the!same!procedure!as!for!the!first!feedback!moment.!The! student!keeps!the!signed!hardcopy.! ! After!week!8!the!practical!work!should!be!!concluded!(in!case!of!extended!projects,!the! experimental!phase!concludes!after!week!12!or!16).!The!remaining!time!allows!the!student!to! analyse!the!data,!finish!writing!the!research!report!and!prepare!for!the!oral!presentation!at!the! Assignment!of!the!project! ! When!a!!project!has!been!assigned!to!a!student!both!supervisor!and!student!are!informed!by! email.!!As!soon!as!possible!the!!student!now!takes!the!initiative!for!a!first!meeting!with!the! supervisor!to!confirm!the!assignment.!This!contact!is!important,!and!if!it!does!not!take!place!the! availability!of!the!project!!can!not!be!guaranteed.! ! Role!of!the!daily!supervisor! ! The!daily!supervisor!regularly!meets!with!the!student!about!the!content!and!planning!of!the! project.!The!daily!supervisor!is!expected!to!supervise!the!student!and!participate!in!the! following!ways:!! ! 1) The!daily!supervisor!is!frequently!available!and!is!responsible!for!the!guidance!of!the! student.! 2) The!daily!supervisor!provides!the!student!with!formal!feedback!at!three!different!stages! of!the!research!process:!after!4!weeks!from!the!start!of!the!project,!!and!in!weeks!8!and!12! Basisvaardigheden”!(Academic!Skills,!year!one!bachelor!Biology).!A!pdf]version!of!this!manual,! as!well!as!additional!reference!material!will!be!provided!through!Blackboard.!The!research! report!will!be!graded!by!both!the!daily!supervisor!and!the!examiner!(see!table!4!and!appendix!3! and!4).! ! ! Submission!of!research!report! ! The!final!version!of!the!research!report!has!to!be!send!before!1st!of!July!to!the!supervisor(s)!! The!title!page!of!the!report!contains:!a!title!of!the!report,!name!of!the!student,!student!number,! name!of!the!daily!supervisor,!examiner!and!the!date!of!submission.!The!document!(still! ungraded)!must!be!submitted!to!blackboard.!All!documents!will!be!scanned!with!Ephorus!for! plagiarism.! !
