Impact Investing Page 3 About Impact Investing Impact investments can target a range of industries and business models. Examples include: microfinance, affordable housing, healthcare, education, renewable energy and more. Here’s my latest take on a few companies working to change the world ... Important to remember … The companies mentioned here embody the spirit of Impact Investing, and are available to many of our clients, depending on your propensity for risk. These companies are all very small (penny stocks) and as such, should be considered speculative in nature and cannot be held or invested in within managed accounts. If you choose to invest in any or all of the companies noted in this document, the investments must be held in a self-directed account and there is a good chance you will lose all the money you choose to invest. There are two ways you can support these companies with your investment dollars: Direct Support With the direct method, you can become a part owner of the company through the purchase of newly issued shares directly from the company, or make a loan to the company through the purchase of a newly issued bond or debenture. In most cases, the direct method is restricted to participation by accredited investors only. Indirect Support With the indirect method, you can become part owner of the company through the purchase of pre- existing shares through the stock exchange, or buy a bond or debenture on the secondary market. The money paid for these stocks, bonds or debentures (securities) goes to the individual who is selling the securities they previously owned, not to the company itself. By purchasing the securities in the secondary market, the demand is increased for the company’s securities. This, in turn, can lend itself to an increase in the price of securities on the secondary market. If the price for the securities increases in the secondary market, the company may be able to issue new shares at a higher price, or the company may have easier access to debt through the direct method if there is a demonstrated secondary market for the securities. While the support that the direct method gives is more, well… direct, the indirect method can also contribute positively to the company. Both can have impact in their own way. Impact Investing Page 5 Bee Vectoring Technology (BVT) This Canadian company has developed a system to distribute organic, naturally occurring pesticides and herbicides using bees. The concept of using bees to deliver naturally occurring herbicides and pesticides has been studied for decades at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Agricultural College. In fact, Bee Vectoring was born out of the university. I’ve had environmental science professors look at this, who ended up becoming investors themselves, if that helps ease any of the immediate reaction to this technology. We have clients who will not invest in this company on ethical grounds. Early test results show a reduction, and in some cases, an elimination of fungicide use in strawberry crops. It showed increased yields of up to 30 per cent, and commercial strawberry growers also reported a longer lasting crop. BVT has just entered into its commercialization stage and is continuing to operate several test sites on a variety of fruits, as well some vegetables, and controversial crops like Canola and Sunflowers. The Bee Vectoring Technology website features a list of these tests. beevt.com Impact Investing Stephen Whipp Financial 734 Goldstream Avenue, Victoria, BC V9B 2X3 | 250.405.3550 | stephenwhipp.ca
Impact Investing Page 6 Clean Seed Capital Another B.C.-based company, Clean Seed has developed a no-till seeder and SMART Seeding Technology that allows an on-board computer to analyze the soil for moisture and soil makeup, then as it plants the seed, the seeder injects the desired amount of moisture and fertilizer into the soil along with the seed. Clean Seed has a working relationship with the University of British Columbia to develop and test organic: fertilizers, pest control technologies and soil conditioners (http://cleanseedcapital.com, 2012). Of course, the decision to use organic fertilizer is controled by the farmer. Real time soil analysis that enables the farmer to deliver optimal formulations of organic fertilizers, herbicides, etc. apparently proved to be just as effective as the commercial non-organic compounds. We’re talking about industrial-sized seeders. The potential influence that this machinery could have on soil is incalculable. cleanseedcapital.com Exro Technologies Inc Exro is a Canadian based company is engaged in commercializing its patented Dynamic Power Management (DPM) technology and proprietary system architecture for rotating electrical machines. It is into creating an intelligent energy management system that converts energy in new ways to improve the performance, efficiency, and longevity of batteries, electric motors, and generators. exro.com Stephen Whipp Financial 734 Goldstream Avenue, Victoria, BC V9B 2X3 | 250.405.3550 | stephenwhipp.ca

The Vancouver-based company utilizes manufacturing plants in Canada and the U.S. to provide its products directly to consumers, resellers and the retail food industry goodnatured.ca GreenPower Motor Company A B.C. electric bus company founded by a Vancouverite and another Island lad. GreenPower uses existing technologies (i.e. electric motors, batteries, bus seats, etc.) to build five of its vehicles and recently broke from that mold to build the GreenPower EV Star Mini-eBus, their first purpose-built electric minibus or 19-passenger van. This emission-free vehicle is the first of its kind, and 7.5 meters long with an operational range, depending on its use, of 200 to 320 km. GreenPower has also made an impact on the California school bus market. Due to the dangerous emissions from diesel, and the impact on children’s brains, the State of California is pushing hard for all school districts to stop using diesel-powered school buses. Electric school buses are an obvious solution. greenpowerbus.com Stephen Whipp Financial 734 Goldstream Avenue, Victoria, BC V9B 2X3 | 250.405.3550 | stephenwhipp.ca
Impact Investing Page 8 Kontrol Energy Kontrol Energy is another Canadian company working with industry to increase energy efficiency and lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and energy costs driven by ‘The Internet of Things’ (IOT), Cloud and Blockchain technology. Over the past several years, Kontrol has sought out and bought other small private companies, in an effort to assemble the knowledge and experience and skill to have a dramatic impact on energy use. “The Story” on Kontrol’s website is worth a look and will give you a better understanding that I could ever hope to. However, remember, that just as with the other companies mentioned above, it is a website designed to entice business as well as investors. kontrolenergy.com NEXE Innovations Inc NEXE is a British Columbia-based advanced materials company engaged in designing and development of a fully plant-based single-serve coffee pod for use in Keurig Brewing Systems. nexeinnovations.com Stephen Whipp Financial 734 Goldstream Avenue, Victoria, BC V9B 2X3 | 250.405.3550 | stephenwhipp.ca
Impact Investing Page 9 RE Royalties RE Royalties is a Vancouver-based company that lends money to private alternative energy projects. This includes small run-of-river, solar and wind projects located in Canada, the U.S. and Eastern Europe. The company issued one of the first retail Green Bond Offerings in 2020. This unique bond went through a third party certification and is a great way for investors to invest their money in a way that is helping to reduce carbon emissions by investing in solar and wind energy. We have several clients who have been supporting the company since before it’s stock was publicly traded on the stock exchange. reroyalties.com UGE International (UGE) A Canadian renewable energy company focused on solar, with offices in New York and Toronto. Listed on the Canadian Venture Exchange, UGE built its reputation for designing, building, installing and maintaining roof-top solar panels for building owners with large roofs, such as Staples, apartment complexes, and schools in the Philippines. Now it’s venturing into owning and operating the installations, providing secure revenue from energy sales. To accomplish this, the company is issuing “Green Project Bonds”. However, these bonds are unfortunately available to accredited investors only. To qualify as an accredited investor, you must have an annual income of $200,000 (or combined income of $300,000 with spouse), $1 million in net liquid assets, or $5 million in net fixed assets. Fortunately, we can buy the common shares on the open market. Despite some volatility I believe this company is doing a lot of the right things. One last interesting piece of info is that the CEO, Nick Blitterswyk (also one of the company founders), grew up on Vancouver Island in Duncan, which gives the company a local connection. ugei.com Stephen Whipp Financial 734 Goldstream Avenue, Victoria, BC V9B 2X3 | 250.405.3550 | stephenwhipp.ca
