Originally 0 The site of Aigues-Mortes has been occupied since mankind walked the earth. If you have the chance, head north-east and if it is open, go through the Gateway of Saint Antoine, you will be warmly wel- comed inside by the members of the “history and archaeology association”. Remains from all times are on show in this gateway: bones, tools, pottery, coins … from the earliest humans to the twentieth century. Roughly ten kilometres to the east of the town is the fort of Peccais. In ancient times a Greek colony settled here and then the Romans in the first century took over the organization of salt production and sale. During the Second World War, its strate- Antiquity gic position did not escape the notice of the German army, who built concrete bunkers here, which everyone who prides himself on being a local has been to explore. It was the Roman engineer Peccius who the territory was named after. The fort was built in 1568 in a region that had been suffering from religious troubles since 1560, and ensured ongoing control of the nearby salt marshes and the canals which were used to transport the salt. It recalls the fortifications of Vauban, although this is later (1633- 1707). As of today there is no access to the fort. Far from all visual distraction, at the edge of the salt marsh it invites you to simply enjoy a peaceful Middle Age setting. In the fifth century the Benedictine monks settled in the hostile environment of the marshes and ponds and founded an abbey. Monks consecrated to the work of God and hence in- cessant psalmodies, both day and night, led to the mon- astery being known as Psalmody or Psalmodi. The remains of the abbey are now private property and are not open to public visits. Texts from the eighth century mention this place under the name of Aquae Mortuae, because of the dead water in the surrounding marsh- es and ponds. LE SAVIEZ It was linked to the sea by the Viel canal, along which flat-bottomed -VOUS ? barges were pulled by horses from the banks. Aigues-Mortes owes its name to these dead waters that surround it. 8
Louis IX in Aigues-Mortes 0 In the thirteenth century, Louis IX did not possess any land bordering on the Mediterranean. He wished to take ad- vantage of this port located in the midst of rival ports, which controlled all the trade in the region. Agde and Saint Gilles were the property of Raymond VII, Marseille of Charles D’Anjou, while Montpellier belonged to the King of Aragon. The land of the dead waters was the only one open to negotiation. It was the perfect place to build an inland port and thereby hold exchange with the West. It was located in the kingdom of France and was linked to the sea by the Viel canal (to the west of the town, nowadays dried up). Meanwhile, the surrounding lands and marshes belonged to the abbey of Psalmody. On the request of Louis IX, the Benedictines agreed to exchange the land of Aigues-Mortes for the vast arable fields belong- ing to the crown in the region of Sommières. Some time later Louis fell seriously ill. He was saved from death by a miracle and made a vow to go and deliver the tomb of Christ which the infidels had conquered. He decided that the crusade would be French and would sail from a French port. History tells us that this RAGOT was for him the chance to escape from the yoke GOSSIP ! of his mother, the famous Blanche de Castille. In 1244, the architect Eudes de Montreuil drew up the first plans for the inland port and the town. Despite the difficult weather and health conditions, the area was inhabited by a sparse population of fishermen and salt manufacturers, living in reed cabins. The alluvial land of Aigues-Mortes has no stones – they were brought from the quarries in Beaucaire and Baux by water. The village was created from nothing on land with no organized planning. It was built between the second and third sandbanks, very close to the marshes of La Marette and the town. Contrary to traditional ideas, the sea has never overcome the ramparts. For four years, the whole region was devoted to this immense project, the construction of a town and a royal port. Conflicts broke out on all sides and led to mutinies. The king imposed forced labour on whole regions, all the way to Alès and beyond. In the end he gave way and offered the suppression of all taxes, fees, tolls and salt tax for everyone who would keep on working. Early in the month of July 1244 Louis IX came to Aigues-Mortes among the crusaders who were pouring in every day. His wife Marguerite de Pro- vence, and his two brothers Robert d’Artois and Charles d’Anjou were with him and all the great lords and barons of France joined them. 9
The 7th Crusade In 1248, the town of Aigues-Mortes was not yet in being - only the ports were pre- pared. Over seven hundred vessels were loaded with provisions, horses and soldiers, sheltered from the violence of the tides. The two first floors of the Big Main Tower were built. This Big Main Tower, later called the King’s Tower and then the Tower of Constance, was the only defensive element in the future fortified town. Its defence system was designed to repel all kinds of attacks. Discovering it on a guided visit is really exciting. As we said above, the soil of Aigues- Mortes is spongy. The piles were set at a depth of twenty metres. The tower did not yet have its lighthouse, but it was planned and finally add- ed in 1250. The lighthouse cannot be visited today for reasons of safety. The terrace is 33 metres high and boasts a unique panorama – on really clear days you can even catch a glimpse of the Pic Saint Loup and Mount Ventoux. « Tour de Constance » In 1270, twenty years later, Louis IX left on his second crusade The 8th Crusade and died shortly afterwards from typhus in Tunisia, on 25 August 1270. On his death, the foundations of the ramparts had only been partially built. His son Philip III the Bold and his grandson Philip IV the Handsome took over and finished the work towards the end of the thirteenth century. Every year over the last weekend in August, Aigues-Mortes dresses itself up in its most attractive me- dieval guise and takes us back to the heart of the Middle Ages. ZOOM « Tour Carbonnière » SUR A walkway was also built over the marsh- lands to join the town to the Tower of Car- bonnière, a toll tower and the only land access to the port of Aigues-Mortes. Visits to the tower are free – it lies in an exceptional envi- ronment. If you climb all the way up the stairs, you will be rewarded with a breath-taking view. In the midst of the marshes and reed beds, you can enjoy spotting the birds which settle in area for food or for protec- tion. How to populate Aigues-Mortes ? In order to populate this new town with its difficult weather and deprived of all agricultural resources, Louis IX granted a charter of franchise to the new town in 1246. Inhabitants were exempted from all port duties and taxes. People flowed in from Catalonia, Provence and Italy. The charter of franchise was confirmed by his son Philip III the Bold and by 14 of his successors. It was thanks to these privileges that the town of Louis IX remained inhabited after the decline of the port. 10
Aigues-Mortes is a military base, and from the heights of its ramparts, soldiers took turns to sound the alarm for danger from the Saracens, in the conflicts of the Hundred Years War and in the sixteenth century against attacks from Spain. In 1481 the port of Marseille became part of the kingdom of France, and the alluvium of the Rhône, the sandbanks and clogging of the channels (leading to the sea) led to the fall of the port of Aigues-Mortes. In the fifteenth century the civil war between the Ar- magnacs and the Burgundians split France apart. In The hundred years war Aigues-Mortes the governor Louis de Malpüe betrayed the town into the hands of the Burgundians. Some of the inhabitants fled and raised the alarm with the Armagnacs posted in Beaucaire. With the conniv- ance of the people who had remained in the town, the Armagnacs came in and massacred all the Burgundians. In was winter, the ground was frozen and it was impos- sible to bury the bodies. To avoid an epidemic, the bod- ies were salted and thrown into a tower which was from then on known as the “Tower of the Burgundians”. Under the effects of the salt, which impeded the effects of putrefaction, the Burgundians’ bellies had turned blue. This is one of the explanations for the nickname “blue-bellies”, given to the people of Aigues-Mortes. The Religious wars LA In 1575 numerous Protestants TOUR pillaged the town of Aigues- PRISON Mortes. They looted, burnt and sacked all the Catholic religious monuments. Protestant power came to an end in 1622 under Louis XIII. In 1685, after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the Huguenots were once again per- secuted. For eighty two years the victims of intolerance that combined religion and state policy were held in the Tower of Constance under royal authority. The Tower was one of the multiple sinister prisons that caused such terror. The exact number is un- known as there was no prison register to record it. In the first years after the Edict of Nantes was revoked, the prisons of the Towers of Constance and La Reine, the largest in the enclosure, were a stage on the way to being deported to the West Indies or being sentenced to be galley slaves. 11
The prisoners of the tower The upper room in the Tower of Con- stance, reserved for men, was at first assigned to prisoners of rank. The lower room, the most hostile, only held women for a long time; later on they were put in the upper room, or in both when the numbers so required. The most surprising escape was that of a Cami- sard leader, Abraham Mazel, in 1705. In 1708 the Tower of Constance was for the first time appointed by decree to be a place of perpet- ual imprisonment for women. In 1715 it was re- served exclusively for women. Prisoners were of all ages and all conditions. Marie Durand One of the best known is one of the women who remained unmovable. She is the incar- IST ER ! nation of rational resistance and the triumphant resignation of women prisoners. She REG was born in Vivarais and grew up in the heart of a harsh and severe country. Her father was arrested in 1729. Her brother, an eminent and peaceful pastor of the Church of the Desert, was hanged in 1732. His authority was such that Marie was arrested in 1730, at the age of fifteen. “Just the surname of the girl”, wrote the provincial governor, “meant that we had to make an example of her”. She was only released in 1768. In prison she inspired the resistance. Tradition has it - rightly or wrongly, it is impossible to be sure – as the author of the word REGISTER scratched into the stone edge of the upper room. Marie Durand endured captivity for 38 years and encouraged her cellmates all this time. Anne Gaussent died in prison in 1763 at the age of 85, after 40 years behind bars. Marie Robert lived there for 41 years. The last woman, Jeanne Darbon, was sent to prison in 1761. Despite the evolution of a more enlight- ened opinion, the obstinacy of the Minister of State Florentin meant that prisoners were only released gradually; their sufferings attracted a growing sympathy. Thanks to the efforts of Fitz-James, commander of the province, and the persevering and generous intervention of the Prince of Beauvau, who presided over the States of Languedoc, women, almost all of whose health had been affected, were gradually released. There were fourteen prisoners remaining in mid-1766. Two years later there were still six. On 27 December 1768 the doors were unceremonious- ly opened for the last two prisoners, Marie Roux and Suzanne Pagès, who had spent 23 and 27 years respectively inside. The Tower then became the symbol of values that no violence could ever destroy. The exemplary faithfulness of these women can be compared to that of the men and women who today suffer and sacrifice their freedom and even their lives in the never-ending struggle for the de- fence and respect of human rights. Permanent expositions tell the story on diverse doors and towers on the LE SAVIEZ rampart walk – take the time to discover them. -VOUS ? 12
The dawn of the revolution was greeted with The French Revolution enthusiasm by the population of Aigues-Mortes. Inhabitants formed popular associations, surveil- lance committees, “Sans-culottes” revolutionary groups and shortly after, aroused by the violence of political passions, certain regrettable events took place in the town, some of which had a tragic ending. The storming of the Bastille was welcomed by the population with great joy, although soon afterwards alarming news started to circulate. The rumour grew that people with no confes- sion and armed bands were going round the countryside and destroying everything in their way. The Mayor and the municipal officers of Aigues-Mortes were elected on 2 February 1790. The law of 17 December 1789 reorganized the municipalities, replacing consuls with a mayor and five municipal officers elected by working-age citizens. At the dawn of the French revolution, the population of Aigues-Mortes was entirely Catholic. When the decree of the National Assembly was issued on 27 November 1790, concerning the civil constitu- tion of the clergy, the inhabitants of Aigues-Mortes, deeply attached to their religious convictions, saw therein a threat to their old traditions. The decree of 27 November 1790 suppressed all religious congregations. Defiant priests went into exile. In September 1792, over 100 priests embarked in Aigues-Mortes on their way to other countries. All the crucifixes erected in the area were thrown down, and in the name of the Commune, it was de- cided to abolish worship forever. The parish church was turned into barracks and later into a republican temple. When you go into the church, on the wall on the left you can see the outline of the fireplaces in the stone – here was where the kitchens were installed. The chapel of the White Penitents became the headquarters of the “Sans cu- lottes” Association, while the chapel of the Grey Penitents was turned into the fodder store for the garrison’s cavalry. It was thanks to the clever initiative of citizen Jean Sol, appointed guard and distributor of fodder for the revolutionaries, that the famous altar piece deco- rating the chapel was saved. It is the masterwork of the sculptor Sabatier and dates from the seventeenth century. Jean Sol hid the altar piece behind bales of hay, which inspired the revolutionaries to make it a store for their fodder. In the early nineteenth century freedom of cult was re-established, churches were given back to the faithful and religious peace was assured. Work on the Rhône to Sète Canal was finished in 1806, and Aigues-Mortes became a river port for the transport firstly of goods and then of passengers. In 1903, the ramparts were classified as a Historical Monument. 13
