WELCOME AND CALL TO WORSHIP
OPENING CAROL: #40 Joy to the World (verses 1 and 2)
CHORAL ANTHEM: “African Noel”……………………………………….....……………..arr. by André Thomas
THE CANDLE LIGHTING AND REFLECTION
One: For the past four weeks, we have been on a journey of watching, actively waiting, and preparing;
each week lighting a different candle. We lit the candle of hope. We are those who listen for the
voices of angels on the wind. We wait. We listen. We hope.
Two: We lit the candle of Love. Love scares us to death. But like hunger and thirst, the longing for love
is implanted in our deepest selves. Love is always a risk, but it is a risk upon which the very heart
of our life depends. To love is to touch the heart of God.
Three: We lit the candle of joy. As freedom can only be tasted in all its sweetness by those who know
the feel of chains, so joy sings with its most full-throated glory only in spirits enlarged by the
weight of despair and softened by the brine of tears.
Four: We lit the candle of peace. At the core of each of us, if we but listen, there is a still, small voice
which can calm our fears, quiet our lives, and dispel our desperation.
Five: Tonight, we light the Christ candle. As we light this candle, we remember that just as God
became enfleshed in Christ, so God becomes enfleshed in us when we make room at every table
and choose to go to the alleys instead of the castles.
All: May the light of Christ shine in and through each of us!

CHRISTMAS PRAYER (unison)
Emmanuel, we listen to the story of prophets and angels, brave young woman and carpenter,
shepherds and magi, and we, too, come to Bethlehem for a blessing. We are filled with love
because you have taken upon yourself our humanity; we are filled with hope because you have
offered us your life and light; we are filled with faith because all that is humble and vulnerable in
us and in creation becomes holy this night. Our peace appears in sweet sacred surprise and we,
too, respond, “Glory to God, and on earth, peace for all.” Amen
ANTHEM: “O Holy Night”................................................................................................arr. by René Clausen
SHARING THE LIGHT #60 Silent Night, Holy Night
Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and child! Holy Infant,
so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, heavenly hosts sing: “Alleluia;
Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.” Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s
pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Love, at
thy birth, Jesus, Love, at thy birth. Silent night, holy night! Wondrous star, lend thy light; With the
angels let us sing, Alleluias that will ring; Christ the Savior is born, Christ the Savior is born.

CHRISTMAS EVE HYMNS 12/24/2020

OPENING CAROL: #40 Joy to the World (verses 1 and 2)
Joy to the world! The Lord is come: Let earth receive her King; Let every heart
prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world! The Savior reigns: Let us our songs employ; While fields and
floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

CHRISTMAS CAROL: #44 O Little Town of Bethlehem (verse 1)
O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and
dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth The
everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.

CHRISTMAS CAROL: #44 O Little Town of Bethlehem (verse 2)
For Christ is born of Mary; and gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the
angels keep Their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together Proclaim
the holy birth! And praises sing to God the King, And peace to all on earth.

CHRISTMAS CAROL: #50 Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow (verse 1)
There’s a star in the East on Christmas morn, Rise up, shepherd, and follow, It
will lead to the place where the Christ was born, Rise up, shepherd, and follow.
Follow, follow, Rise up, shepherd, and follow, Follow the Star of Bethlehem, Rise
up, shepherd, and follow.

CHRISTMAS CAROL: #41 O Come, All Ye Faithful (verse 1)
O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to
Bethlehem! Come, and behold Him, Born the King of Angels! O come, let us
adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the
Lord!
