The coronavirus has affected us all, but not equally. For our brothers and sisters in urgent need WORSHIP RESOURCES around the world, the effects of this crisis are catastrophic. Already struggling, vulnerable communities are now being pushed to the brink without the support they need to survive. As the world battles this pandemic, the legacy of Rev. Frank Byatt, the founder of the Christmas Bowl, has never been more important. Frank believed we have a responsibility to share what we have with others who need it. He saw it USEFUL INFORMATION as a fundamental part of living out Jesus’ call to love our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:31). That’s why, in 1949 he called his congregation to “get a bowl to put on your Christmas dinner table as a Bowl of Remembrance and see if you can get everybody round the table to make a generous gift so that you can share your good dinner with hungry children in other lands.” That first Christmas Bowl appeal raised £1,808. No small sum for a congregation at the time. But Frank didn’t stop How to use this toolkit there. His mission was to unify all Australian Christians, of all traditions, to work together to put the word of the Gospel into action. This toolkit is designed to be used by ministers and church leaders. It contains weekly worship As Frank wrote in 1958: “The evangel is complete only when resources which can be used to guide your services. Week 1: November 22 2020 Rev. Ken Day, from St Stephen’s Uniting Church speaks at the church’s annual Sermon Starter GETTING STARTED Christmas Bowl service. The celebration of Christ the King affirms that good leadership - whether at the national, regional, or local level - is necessarily servant leadership. Our lessons on this day tell us about servant leadership. In the reading from Ezekiel, the work of a shepherd is presented as a metaphor in contrast to selfish national leadership. From Matthew’s gospel lesson, Jesus’ story of the last judgement, the King of WORSHIP RESOURCES the universe pronounces judgement on all people according to the quality of practical mercy exhibited in their lives. This day of Christ the King is not an attempt to whitewash authoritarian leaders and render them more “cuddly”, such as we find in a Christmas episode of The Vicar of Andy Corkill/Act for Peace Dibley, in which David (a local politician) was cast as Herod in a Nativity play. He wanted to show Herod in a more favourable light and present his “softer side”. Rather, this USEFUL INFORMATION day seeks to promote servant leadership and to challenge any leadership that does not reflect a servant character. Our participation in the Christmas Bowl enables us to stand alongside those communities around the world who seek to Christ the King Sunday promote such a servant leadership in their own contexts. your people, with thanksgiving when I was ill, you came to my Liturgy we come into your presence. Today, on Christmas Day, there is a strong note of universality in the lessons from scripture. When we hear the proclamation, known to many of us in the way it was set to music in Handel’s Messiah, that “a child has been born to us”, we know that the “us” in the lesson is as wide and as broad an “us” as is possible. When the angels tell the shepherds about “good news of great joy for all people”, the “all” is particularly significant. The “good news of great WORSHIP RESOURCES joy” is not confined to particularly religious people, or particularly moral /Ac t for Peace people, or particularly intelligent people, or people of your own cultural group … but to all people. God’s compassion is universal. In the famous “Christmas dinner” episode of The Vicar of Dibley, Takund a Mandondo Geraldine managed to accept four dinner invitations on Christmas Day out of her desire to express compassion to a number of different friends who would be otherwise dining alone. In this case, practical and universal compassion equalled serious indigestion.
