CL ASS OF 2021 Oath of Professionalism We, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Class of 2021, vow to uphold our institution’s values of respect, integrity, teamwork, and excellence. In the presence of family, faculty, and fellow students, we hereby pledge this oath: To our patients, WE WILL provide compassionate and equitable care. In order to preserve the doctor-patient relationship, we will build trust and value autonomy. As healers, our work will be ethically sound, culturally competent, and patient-centered. To our colleagues, WE WILL foster an environment of accountability, collaboration, and innovation. With humility, we commit to overcoming our limitations by learning from the strengths of others. We will promote effective communication and embrace the diverse perspectives of all members of the healthcare team. To our society, WE WILL empower the communities we serve and advocate on their behalf. We shall advance medicine through the life-long pursuit of knowledge. We vow to not only treat disease, but also prevent it through education and research. We, the Class of 2021, pledge to embody these values of compassionate care, collaboration, and community engagement in both our professional and personal lives. It is a joy and privilege to embrace our role as caregivers, to learn from our predecessors, and to build strength in unity.

U N I V E R S I T Y O F C I N C I N N AT I C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E ANDREW T. FILAK JR., MD Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean, College of Medicine C ongratulations to the Class of 2021. It is an honor to welcome you into the fellowship of physicians as you complete this phase of your medical education. We are extremely proud of your accomplishments and you should be as well. Today is a day to celebrate. You have sacrificed much. You have worked hard to earn the Doctor of Medicine degree. Celebrate with your family and friends— those who have supported, encouraged and assisted you. And thank them, as we do, for being a part of your journey to becoming a physician. As you continue this journey through your residency training and into practice, remember that your education should never end. Medical knowledge will change and advance at an accelerating pace. There will be new discoveries, new medications, new diagnostic tests, and new treatments. It is important that you keep pace with this explosion of knowledge and technology. But it is most important that you remember that you now have a tremendous responsibility as each and every patient entrusts his or her care or that of a loved one to you. Always treat them with the compassion, dignity and respect they deserve. We have great confidence in you and know that you will be excellent representatives of the College of Medicine. We hope that you will look fondly on your years at the College of Medicine. It is an honor and privilege to have you as part of the College of Medicine community. 4
U N I V E R S I T Y O F C I N C I N N AT I C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E AURORA J. BENNETT, MD Associate Dean for Student Affairs C ongratulations to each of you as you celebrate this milestone with those who have been with you through the many hardships and victories that you have encountered during your journey to this moment. The professional accomplishments of the Class of 2021 are astounding as we recollect the numerous publications, presentations, mission trips, and community service projects. There have also been the many sacrifices of time, money, and missed personal experiences. Remember, that this is only a stop in the journey and it will soon be time to continue moving forward. The humbling apprehension of being an intern is inevitable but will begin to fade as you begin to trust your knowledge and skills. My hope for each of you is that the “humbled intern” never fades completely. Despite the symbolism of power and intelligence that our society connects with the “MD,” we know that we cannot always offer cures and good news. But, we can always offer empathy and compassion, if we are willing to stand by our patients, as fellow human beings, in those inevitable hard times. Take pride in the privilege that is being bestowed upon you today and use it with respect and humility. 5

U N I V E R S I T Y O F C I N C I N N AT I C O L L E G E O F M E D I C I N E A B R I E F H I S TO RY The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine was founded January 19, 1819, when frontier physician Daniel Drake, MD, received a charter from the Ohio State Legislature to establish a college of medicine in Cincinnati. Twenty-four students attended the first class in 1820, and on April 4, 1821, seven students received medical degrees at the college’s first commencement. The next 30 years were difficult for the college. The college lost many of its students during Cincinnati’s two-year cholera outbreak beginning in 1832 and almost collapsed in 1835. Despite near constant troubles, the college continued. The second half of the 19th century were days of prosperity and prominence for the Medical College of Ohio. Classes grew steadily, and disagreements among faculty and the college’s board were minimal. An influx of outstanding medical teachers and clinicians raised the national stature of the college. On April 27, 1896, the college merged with the University of Cincinnati and the school moved from downtown to the old McMicken University Building on today’s West Clifton Avenue. Soon the college admitted its first female student, Marie Cora Boyd, who would graduate in 1903. At the close of the 1908-1909 academic year, the Medical College of Ohio merged with Miami Medical College into a single medical department for the university called the Ohio-Miami Medical College. The college would become known as the UC College of Medicine in 1921. The college received a significant endorsement in 1913 when the American Medical Association placed it on its list of Class A+ medical colleges, one of just 22 medical schools receiving the highest grade. During this time Christian Holmes, MD, led a new enlightened age for the medical school. A new building on Eden Avenue for the college opened in 1918. Major donations came in, the first 10 endowed chairs were established between 1909 and 1930, and a new hospital named for Holmes was built. The College of Medicine and Children’s Hospital affiliated in 1925. Significant research growth also was occurring at the College of Medicine. Beginning in 1922, the college’s reputation as a hub of surgical innovation and education skyrocketed with several surgeons coming to Cincinnati from Johns Hopkins University. Following the 1930 opening of the Kettering Laboratories, important toxicology and occupational health research established the college’s international reputation in these fields. The Medical Sciences Building opened in 1974 allowing the school’s class size to jump by nearly 50 percent. The Cardiovascular Center (1995), the Vontz Center for Molecular Studies (1999) and the CARE/ Crawley Building (2008) followed. The College of Medicine today celebrates its 203rd graduating class, among its largest and most diverse, which will carry on its rich tradition and, in Drake’s words, “that your own lives shall spread abroad her fame.” 36
Hippocratic Oath “Now being admitted to the profession of medicine, I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of humanity. I will give respect and gratitude to my deserving teachers. I will practice medicine with conscience and dignity. The health and life of my patients will be my first consideration. I will hold in confidence all that my patient confides in me. I will maintain the honor and noble traditions of the medical profession. My colleagues will be as my brothers and sisters. I will not permit consideration of race, religion, nationality, politics or social standing to intervene between my duty and my patient. I will maintain the utmost respect for human life. Even under threat I will not use my knowledge contrary to the laws of humanity. These promises I make freely and upon my honor.”
