A MESSAGE FROM JUNIA STEPHENS, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, FRIENDS OF THE MILWAUKIE CENTER As 2019 comes to a close and the sun sets on another decade, we should all take a moment to reflect. For me personally, this year has been life changing and oh, so fulfilling. To think that late in life one can find their perfect calling is quite humbling. Since beginning my journey with the Friends of the Milwaukie Center in March, every single day has been perfectly wonderful. I am thrilled to be a part of such a compassionate and supportive atmosphere. The Staff here and my Board of Directors have been so very welcoming, and the patrons of our great Center are so special. I have enjoyed getting to know you and hearing your stories. When one starts a new life adventure or turns the page to a new chapter, it is always exciting, yet at times can make you apprehensive or question the path you have taken. I have felt nothing but confidence that my decision to join the Milwaukie Center family was one of the best I’ve ever made. I look forward to continuing to grow with the Center and to helping those that are lucky enough to be a part of it to enjoy the full benefits of this special community. FIT TIPS WITH HERTA We’ve all heard the terms circuit training, interval training and HIIT, but do you know what they mean and the differences between them? If so, then you can reap the benefits each has to offer, but if not, then you could just be wasting your time and not seeing the results you want. And worse, you could be opening yourself to overuse injuries. Let’s take a closer look at each type of training regime. Circuit Training: Involves several (usually 6-10) exercise stations performed one after the other, with each one focusing on a different muscle group. The idea behind a circuit is that one muscle group is resting while you’re working on another one. For example, the legs will rest from squats as you move to doing push-ups, and the chest and arms rest while you perform a core exercise. Because there is little to no rest between stations, just the time it takes to move to the next one, this type of workout can quickly become a cardiovascular workout. Benefits of Circuit Training: Herta McClenahan is an ACE- 1. It is time efficient. You’re always moving to a different exercise, so you certified Personal Trainer, can do more in less time. There are endless possibilities to creating circuits. Interval Training: Typically includes a variety of exercises, but is less about what you’re doing and more about the intensity of what you’re doing. Interval training relies on moderate- to high-intensity work with periods of active or passive rest. The intervals of work-to-rest can vary depending on the goals of the workout, the fitness level of the participant(s), and type of “equipment” or tools being used. An example might look like: 1 minute of squats, followed by 30 seconds of jumping jacks, followed by 30 seconds easy walking. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training): This is interval training gone wild! It will typically include a strength or cardio exercise, followed by an activity performed at near maximum output, followed by a longer rest period. There may be 4-6 pairings in this type of workout. HIIT workouts should not be done more than three times a week due to the intensity and the body’s need for recovery days. continued on page 13 This page sponsored by: Life is Larger at Willamette View A Nationally Accredited Senior Community Come for a tour: 12705 SE River Road Portland, OR 503.654.6581 Page 12 milwaukiecenter.com
