It generates the consistently inhospitable ambient condi- tions for up to 100 cameras at a time, which, according to another specification, must remain switched on during the temperature test. They have to operate in the heat and work flawlessly, just like in a real traffic setting. As a result, the electronics specialists also developed the entire test-bench software. The programs activate the cameras, supply them with simulated driving images, and continuously record and analyze the test data. The cus- tom “hardware” is equally as important: thanks to sophis- ticated HOERBIGER lift and carrier systems, the customer is able to connect all specimens quickly, using a process that is gentle on the components, and feed them with ease into the furnace. “We are like a chameleon that is able to adapt perfectly to any test a customer desires,” emphasizes Managing Director Ralf Knura. “Still, the current burn-in validation system was a genuine first for us too since it tests simulated practical conditions.” When it comes to other electronics, HOERBIGER has already established itself as a world market leader. 22 HOERBIGER@MOTION

DRIVE Fast data transmission Revolutionized end-of-line testing in the HS Kairo made by HOERBIGER is a worldwide automotive industry using LED communication: the HS Kairo system, here parameterized by unrivaled system for wirelessly transmitting Dr. Grigorij Grabovskij, Hardware Development large volumes of data very quickly, specifically Team Leader at HOERBIGER Elektronik GmbH. in production. At 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) – which equates to the Fast Ethernet standard – it communicates via visible LED light. This offers a number of advantages. Unlike laser-based technologies, the concept does not pose any danger to the human eye. And in con- trast to WLAN, performance is not dependent on the number of users currently in the network, but remains consistently high. Another special feature, in particular for automotive applica- tions, is a unit that is attached to the building ceiling, for example, (and connected to a server) and uses blue LED light. The other unit utilizes red signals and is attached by a suction cup to the inside of the windshield of the vehicle being tested (and is linked to the vehicle’s on- board electronic system). Since these colors correspond to the light spectrum of emergency vehicles, it is also ensured by law that they are able to penetrate any kind of automotive glass. The maximum communication range of HS Kairo is 30 meters (almost 100 feet), and the angle can be flexibly adjusted via the optical system. So it doesn’t exactly come as a surprise that this HOERBIGER system is being used by thousands in the production of vehicles – with other industries also increasingly expressing an interest in it. for ever more powerful safety and comfort systems increases to include assistance systems for automated driving. Electric vehicles additionally speed up this development. Speaking of electric cars, one model that produces its power from a fuel cell is now able to refuel hydrogen ten times faster thanks to HOERBIGER. This means that the challenges for the engineers in Ammerbuch will remain great, but the math is simple: “The more electronics are installed in vehicles, the better it will be for us,” the Managing Directors are certain about the exciting future. HORIZON AUDI A1 SPORTBACK The Audi A1 Sportback is the ideal companion in an urban setting and remains the most compact five-door Audi model. In its second generation, though, it also appeals to new target groups as it covers long distances with even more class and comfort. How exactly does the latest Audi A1 Sportback accomplish this feat? To begin with, having grown to just over four meters (158 inches) in length and making better use of its space, it now offers considerably more room for the driver, passengers, and luggage. Additionally, it boasts a striking, masculine design and features a dynamic wide track. With its three flat slots on the hood, the compact car pays homage to the Sport quattro, Audi’s 1984 rally icon. Audi tasked its designers to achieve “the sportiest inte- rior in the compact class,” so the cockpit is accordingly focused on the driver. In fact, drivers will find standard and optional features in the interior that are customarily reserved for the high-end classes. It is also where the HOERBIGER Group exhibits its corporate activities in multimedia presentations spread across approximately 600 square meters (6,500 square feet) of space. At the same time, it is a meeting point and place of communication for all employees. Moving columns equipped with screens on three sides serve as structural features of the Forum.
