Supporting the arts, locally. Each year, through various donations and sponsorships, we are committed to helping our local communities. We’re proud to be the 2018/2019 season sponsor of the Grand Theatre.
Welcome I went to the prom here in London at Catholic Central High School in 1985. My prom date was one of my best friends, Angela David. I remember all the excite- ment leading up to the big night: asking her to be my date, organizing the “limo” (another friend I paid to drive us there), the thrill of renting a tuxedo from Bud Gowan’s, and dancing into the night at Centennial Hall. It was a triumphant occasion celebrating some very happy years in high school. Angela remains a close friend whom I see often now that I have moved home. I didn’t officially come out as a gay person until I was in university — I was 21 years old. It was certainly never discussed, shared among my friends, or something even possible to think much about in my high school years. We simply held in our innermost thoughts and did our best to conform to the rules as we all understood them. The world has changed consider- ably in these past few decades and high school students are able to express themselves much more openly than ever before. Prom Queen celebrates the power of young people to stand proudly for everything they know themselves to be. I am so impressed with Marc Hall — and I love to imagine him back in 2002 as a 17-year-old person making one simple request: to take his boyfriend to the prom. With this High School Project, we connect closely to an important part of Ontario’s history as we celebrate the power of young, confident minds — the hope for our future. Welcome to the Prom. dennis garnhum, artistic director We would like to acknowledge the history of the traditional territory in which the Grand Theatre operates. We would also like to respect the longstanding relationships of the three local First Nations groups of this land and place in Southwestern Ontario; the Chippewa of the Thames First Nation (part of the Anishinaabe), the Oneida Nation of the Thames (part of the Haudenosaunee) and the Munsee-Delaware Nation (part of the Leni-Lunaape).

T H E COM PA N Y OF PROM QU EEN: T HE M U SIC A L IN R EH E A R S A L . The only theatre program of its kind in North America, the High School Project (HSP) began in 1998 with West Side Story. Since then, the Grand Theatre has produced 34 High School Projects. In 2016, the program celebrated its 20th anniversary with the best-selling Les Misérables: School Edition, which was followed by the hit production of Evita last year. The HSP offers an exceptional opportunity for students to receive education and training in the working environment of a professional theatre. High school students from London and area are mentored by professional artists and coaches in all departments (acting, stage management, props, wardrobe, scenic art, sound, stage, orchestra, and photography) culminating in a pro- duction on the Grand’s Spriet Stage. The acclaimed program provides leadership, creative, and communication skills that serve these students on and off stage — in every area of their lives. This year will mark the first time the project brings a new Canadian musical to stage. Prom Queen was originally developed through Sheridan College’s Canadian Music Theatre Project (Come From Away). The production had its world premiere at Montreal’s Segal Centre for the Performing Arts in a held-over run, was presented at New York’s National Alliance of Musical Theatre’s New Musical Festival, and was recently presented for a public workshop at The Other Palace in London, England’s West End.

LIFE AFTER PROM Q& In 2002, Oshawa high school student Marc Hall was denied permission to bring his boyfriend to the prom. Marc took the Durham Catholic School Board to court, and on the day of the prom, a judge granted an injunction that allowed him to attend prom — and bring his boyfriend — that very evening. We sat down with Marc to find out about where life has taken him after his prom night. The media covered your case extensively in the days and weeks leading up to your hearing. What was life like for you after the controversy and upheaval surrounding the case had subsided? As a result of all the media attention and the court case, my name was out there. It was really incredible because over the next few years I was invited to speak at several high schools and universities about my experience! All were motivational speaking engagements where I would talk about my story and give words of encouragement to students, emphasizing that they can make a difference if they believe in something and that they should always believe in and stand up for themselves. I was also invited to be the Grand Marshal for a couple of Pride parades around Canada and was awarded with a few community and activist awards. Such an incredi- ble honour! At the time, did you have any notion that your case would generate the attention, or the legacy that it has? I had NO idea! My goal was simply to be treated equally and to take my boyfriend to the prom. Quite frankly, at first I was scared and intimidated about how quickly the story was gaining attention. And during the entire prom ordeal there were moments I didn’t even think I could handle it anymore — there was so much pressure, and I was only 17. I remember one night I was having a really hard time thinking about everything that was happening, and I received a random phone call from a young 13-year-old boy who said he was struggling with his iden- tity, that nobody knew he was gay, that he was scared, but that he was following my story in the news and that it was giving him strength. I had a long conversation with him and by the end he was feeling better. In two weeks’ time, he came out to his parents and they were very
&A WITH MARC HALL supportive. He called me again to let me know and said thanks for helping him through it. It was at that point I realized that what I was doing was about more than just me — I realized that I was fighting for a community. I am extremely grateful, happy, and honoured that my story has helped people. What changes have you seen in Canada, and in the world, since your case? In Canada we’ve certainly come a long way. In 2005, the Civil Liberties Act granted equal marriage rights. We have seen legislation pop up around the country regarding the implemen- tation of Gay-Straight-Alliances, which provide support to LGBTQ+ students at their schools. There was the federal government’s 2017 formal apology for historic discriminatory laws. And I think, in general, there is a collective shift in perceptions: people know that being LGBTQ+ is normal. People know and understand that love is love and that’s what matters. We do have much more to do, but I believe that Canada is one of the best places in the world to live as an LGBTQ+ person. Have you been back to Oshawa? Do you see any changes happening in your hometown, or even at your old high school? My wonderful family still lives in Oshawa so I visit them a few times a year. I think it’s changed quite a bit — I believe the atmosphere in general is a lot more positive and accepting. I think my high school is doing very well. The current principal was one of my favourite teachers when I went to school there. I was contacted by one of my high school teachers and it turns out they now have a Gay-Straight Alliance group at the school. I’ve been invited to go meet with the students so I’m really looking forward to that! It’s really great to know how far they have come. We’ve recently seen a number of examples of students standing up for their rights — do you feel optimistic about the direction of our future? Honestly, it’s so incredible and heartwarming to see. It gives me a lot of hope for the future. These young people are the future and it’s wonderful to see that they are taking stands on a variety of different issues especially in the current political climate. We have an obligation to stand with them, to help them, and to encourage them to continue fighting the good fight. What message would you like to send to high school students today? Know that your voice will be heard if you speak up and that you are never alone in any struggle that you are facing. If you fight for a cause you believe in, wonderful things can happen. You have the ability to make change. If you haven’t found your voice yet, trust me, you'll get there!

King’s University College, Catholic Studies for Teachers Program, Class of 2022. “On July 21, 2014, I entered the Grand Theatre for my very first High School Project (HSP) rehearsal of The Addams Family. At the time, I had no idea how much this place would come to mean to me and how this pro- gram would impact my life. The HSP instilled in me a passion for theatre. As I head off to university, it is my aspiration to teach high school dance and drama and to inspire youth as the HSP has inspired me. The HSP is not just a program — it’s a family that supports one another to grow and develop their skills to the best of their abilities. The friendships we have formed will be with us forever. I am so proud to be a HSP alumnus, and will always cherish the memories made within these walls and on this stage.” EL L ENA GR A N T, L EF T, A N D MORG A N F U L M ER , R IGH T (HELLO, DOLLY!, 2015). HERE’S YOUR CUE TITLE SPONSOR WESTERN FAIR DISTRICT The Western Fair District is delighted to return as Title Sponsor of the Grand’s High School Project (hsp). This project gives one-of-a-kind opportunities for London’s youth to showcase their talents and, like Western Fair District, has a distinguished history in our city. The Western Fair District (wfd) is a multi-faceted, not-for-profit, Agricultural Society based in the heart of London, Ontario. We are a member-driven organization supported by an exten- sive group of volunteers and staff. wfd is a leading year-round agriculture, entertainment, commercial, sports, and recreation destination for residents of London and beyond, anchored by its signature event, the annual Western Fair. One of the principles guiding the work we do is to be a vibrant community-based organization, and a valued and inclusive corporate citizen. This is one of the many reasons we choose to partner with organizations like the Grand Theatre. As an organization that prides itself on diversity and inclusion, we are particularly thrilled to be a part of this ground-breaking production based on the true story of Marc Hall. This is a story that needs to be told and who better to tell it than London’s incredibly talented youth? Western Fair District is so much more than the annual Fair, although it is a critical and valued part of our identity. In this way, we see a parallel with the hsp that is also, after 20 years, a critical part of the Grand’s identity. We see the value in providing train- ing for youth through the skills and confidence they develop. We see the results of our investment as these amazing young people go forward into careers in theatre and other T H E COM PA N Y OF PROM QU EEN: T HE M U SIC A L IN R EH E A R S A L W I T H M USIC A L DIR ECT OR A N DR E W PET R A SI U NA S. industries. Our Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers congratulate all of the youth who participated in the production, and thank their families for their support. We extend our thanks to the mentors and staff at the Grand who helped to shape this experience.
Thank you The Grand Theatre’s Board of Directors and staff want to thank Londoners and all those across the country and beyond who came forward to celebrate and support everything that the 2018 High School Project, Prom Queen: The Musical, embraces - diversity, inclusion, and human rights. More than 700 donors supported the community crowdfunding initiative launched by rTraction and generously sponsored by Lerners LLP and Tourism London. Funds raised through this crowdfunding initiative enabled the Grand to provide over 1600 complimentary tickets to students and supported bringing the story of Marc Hall to the Grand Theatre stage.
