HWS: Exhibits and Friendships by Patrice Federspiel HWS had three exhibits in downtown Honolulu in September 2021. Both the HWS Open Exhibit and the Little Picture Show were located at the Downtown Arts Center on Nu`uanu Avenue. The Hawaii Watercolor Society Signature Exhibit features 50 paintings and three sculptures by 19 artists is in the mezzanine of Pauahi Tower. Helping to hang the HWS Signature Exhibit was an honor, a labor of love. It’s exciting to see the paintings of people I’ve loved and admired — for about 20 years! It’s heartening to see works by Jackie Black, David Gregory, Judith Perry, Sue Roach, and Roger Whitlock — Hawaii’s “ex-pats.” They’ve left the islands, but a good portion of their heart remains here, and they choose to stay members of HWS. Art hung! With each exhibit, I see changes and growth in everyone’s art. It’s beautiful to see each person try new techniques and watch their art progress with each passing show. If you’re new to HWS, you might be surprised by the bonds some of the members have with one another. I assure you, years of either working on the Board of Directors or serving as Chair or Assistant on an exhibit or a workshop are the reasons our friendships are so solid. Join us and you’ll see what I mean. We’ve all become “aficionados of the brush” together. Watercolor brought us together and it keeps us together. We learn from one another and watch each other grow and Janet Brennan and Sheyla Stevens check in Debby Pacheco change until we land upon our preferred method/style, and we deepen into that. Earning Signature Status is done by accumulating points from entering exhibits and winning awards. It takes years to earn the right to put “HWS” after your signature on your painting. It’s far easier to join the board or assist with an event, you reap the rewards of gratitude and friendship much more quickly, too! We’re coming up on time to elect our board of directors for 2022. If your curiosity is piqued and you have an hour or two to join in the monthly Zoom meeting, contact Sharon Billingsley (info@ hawaiiwatercolorsociety.org). Maureen Takano at check-in

Background: Article III, Section 2 C of our current by-laws allow 20 points toward signature membership for an acceptance in a national juried exhibition, and 30 points for an award in a national juried “Waikiki Beach” by Eric Wiegardt exhibition. The board felt that there needed to be more clarification as to what defines a “national” exhibition. We propose the following definition be added to the by-laws for clarity: A national show is defined as a show that is run by a non-regionally designated organization and has designated the show as “National” or “International”.
