The Welcome Packet contains important information about our school, as well as district and community resources available to Flood families. Please be sure to review the Important Policies section for details on the PowerSchool Parent Portal, Absenteeism and Cell Phones. At Flood, we encourage our students to demonstrate the core values of our motto S.O.A.R. each and every day. Students are expected to be Safe, Optimistic, Accountable and Respectful as they participate in the school day. We truly believe that if a student feels Safe, is Optimistic about their learning, is Accountable for their actions and Respectful to staff and peers, they will have a positive middle school experience. As a staff, we strive to provide a rigorous learning environment in which all students are challenged and engaged. In addition to your child’s academic progress, we also prioritize their social-emotional learning as well. We view the educational experience of each child as a partnership between the student, parent/guardian, and the school, and a critical piece of the partnership is communication. IMPORTANT DISTRICT POLICIES & PROCEDURES: Cell Phone/Ear Buds/Headphone Usage/Smartwatches All electronic devices must be kept out of sight. If electronic devices are seen or heard, they must be turned into the main office and picked up by a parent or guardian. Chronic Absenteeism & Tardies Students that are chronically absent from school or chronically tardy to school will be submitted for review by the Building Attendance Review Committee (BARC). The committee is made up of building personnel (school counselor, administrator, social worker, etc.) This committee will review, plan and implement interventions with the student and family to improve attendance. If attendance concerns continue and do not improve, the case will be submitted to the Stratford Attendance Review Board (SARB) for further planning and interventions. This committee comprises district agencies and representatives including but not limited to Pupil Service staff, Community Services and the Department of Children and Families. Tardiness To School A student will be considered tardy to school if he or she arrives in homeroom after 8:15 a.m. Students arriving late to school must report to the office, where a class admittance slip will be issued. If a student arrives late to school without a notice or telephone call from a parent, the tardy is considered unexcused. He/she will receive a warning on the first and second unexcused tardies, parents will be contacted and an office referral may be issued on the third unexcused tardy. A parent/administrator conference will be scheduled. Tardiness To Class If a student is late to class, he or she will receive a warning. Any tardiness after the first warning will result in a restorative conference with administration. If a student is tardy a third time to the same class, a lunch detention will be issued and/or hallway passing plan may be implemented. Emergency Forms It is important for the safety and well-being of the student that the school is able to reach a parent or guardian at all times. Parents or guardians should be sure to notify the school should there be a change of address or telephone number during the school year. Parents will be asked to complete and return an Emergency Information Form with emergency phone numbers as soon as possible. Emails will be sent home from each team during the academic year. Please include your email address to receive these communications.
Student & Parent Portal It is important to be signed up for access to the Student Portal and Parent Portal. This allows students and parents the ability to view grades and student progress for all classes. Access may be provided by coming to the school and signing receiving a password from the office secretaries. A valid Driver’s License or ID is needed in order to obtain access for parents. E-Blast Communication Updates on school events through the district message blast system will periodically be sent to those parents who have elected to receive them through the PowerSchool system. Flood Twitter Account Please follow us on Twitter at @FloodFalcons Progress Reports & Parent/Teacher Conferences Progress reports notification will occur four times per year– once each marking period via the parent portal on PowerSchool. Progress reports are viewed via parent portal on-line. If a student received notification of potential failure in two or more subjects, the team leader or guidance counselor will call home to arrange for a parent/counselor/teacher meeting. Parent/teacher conferences are held each fall. Additional conferences are scheduled upon request. RULER This program is being introduced prek-12 in Stratford Public Schools during the 2021-2022 School year. RULER stands for Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions. These skills will be developed in programming during a student’s time at FMS. “RULER is an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER supports the entire school community in: • Understanding the value of emotions • Building the skills of emotional intelligence • Creating and maintaining a positive school climate*” *From the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence Website.
V. MESSAGE FROM THE NURSE Welcome to Flood Middle School! I am looking forward to working with you and your children this year! Please review the following items carefully to help ensure a healthy and safe 2019-2020 school year. If you have any questions please call or email me. Kim Velazquez, RN 203-385-4280 or velazquezk@stratk12.org Health Concerns Please inform your school nurse of any severe allergies or health concerns. Peanut Aware Policy Flood Middle School is a peanut aware school! Please see the next page for more information. Medications Per policy, no child is to take or carry ANY medications to school (this includes prescription and over the counter medications including inhalers and cough drops). If your physician orders a medication to be given at school a physician order is required for each school year in the form of a “Medication Authorization Form” which requires both a physician and parent signature. Forms are available in the nurse’s office. Medications must be in the original container and brought to the nurse’s office by an adult. Please be aware that if your child is prescribed an epi-pen it is mandatory that one be provided to the school. Keeping Your Child Home From School Students must stay home from Students must remain home: school if they: ● Have a fever of 100.1 or higher ● For 24 hours after an elevated temperature returns to normal without anti-inflammatory medication (Motrin, Tylenol etc.) ● Have vomited in the past 24 hours ● For 24 hours after episodes of ● Have diarrhea more than once in severe vomiting and/or diarrhea; the past 24 hours student should be able to eat a full regular meal without vomiting

Any development of the above symptoms throughout the school day will require early pickup. Extra Clothing Accidents happen! Please consider keeping an extra pair of clothes (pants, underwear, socks and shirt) in your child’s backpack in a Ziploc bag. This will prevent your child from missing classroom time, and you from missing
time from work if the health office does not have clothing for your child to borrow in the event that they need a change of clothes. Peanut/Nut Policy The aim is to provide a safe and healthy school environment that takes into consideration the needs of all students, including those who may suffer from nut allergies. Parents are asked to not send any nuts or nut products to school to support the health and wellbeing of those students that are at risk of having an allergic reaction to nut products.
COVID-19 2021-2022 Guidelines (as of 8/25/2021) • Daily Home Health Screening: Please continue to do a brief health assessment for yourself or your student each morning before school. Please stay home if you have any positive response to the questions listed on the SPS COVID 19 Daily Health Check tool. • Illness at Home: Beyond the symptoms listed on the screening tool, anyone who has symptoms of illness should stay at home. Please do not medicate with fever reducing medications and come to school. Fever, greater than 100 degrees, is often an indicator of infection and should be evaluated by a health care provider. • Illness at School: Students or staff who become ill while at school should report to the school nurse. Any individual with symptoms suggestive of COVID 19 will be referred to their health care provider for assessment. Parents should have a plan in place to provide prompt pick up of their child from school if needed. • ReEntry to School Following Illness: Students and staff who are dismissed to home from school due to symptoms suggestive of COVID, will need to be assessed by a healthcare provider. A note from a healthcare provider or documentation of a negative COVID test will be required before reentry into school. • Positive COVID test or exposure: Any student or staff member who tests positive for Covid 19 or has had close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID 19 should contact the school nurse immediately. The nurses will be working closely with our Health Department and Administration to respond to individual situations. • Vaccinated Students and Staff: Students and staff who show documentation of full COVID vaccination and remain symptom free, will not need to quarantine even if exposed to a positive COVID case. It is recommended that these individuals be tested on day 5 after exposure. If you would like documentation of your student’s COVID vaccine to be kept on file, please send a copy to your school nurse. • Isolation of positive cases of COVID 19: In the case of a positive case being identified at school, the positive individual will be referred to their health care provider. People who test positive for COVID 19 must isolate themselves from others for 10 days from the date of the positive test or from the date that symptoms began. 10 days is the period of time that positive individuals are most likely to pass the virus to others. • Quarantine of close contacts: The DPH (Department of Public Health) defines a close contact as any unvaccinated student, in a classroom where everyone is masked, who is within 3 feet of a positive case for 15 minutes or more. For non-students and for anyone outside of a masked classroom setting, a close contact is any unvaccinated individual who is within 6 feet of a positive case for 15 minutes or more. Close contacts are to quarantine (stay at home) for 10 days from the date of exposure and monitor for any symptoms of illness. Close contacts may choose to be tested for COVID on day 5 after exposure and if the test result is negative, the exposed individual can return to school on day 8 after exposure. • Masking: Per the Connecticut Governor’s Executive Order, EXECUTIVE ORDER NO.13A PROTECTION OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND SAFETY DURING COVID-19, masks are required for everyone in public school buildings through September 30, 2021.
VI. WAYS FOR STUDENTS TO GET INVOLVED Sign up for the 21st Century After-School Program The 21st Century After-School Program provides a safe & structured setting for students to make new friends, challenge themselves & experience success. The program has the unique ability to join together students, families, teachers, & community professionals. The program also offers participants the chance to participate in family engagement activities and field trips. The program will include 3 sessions run throughout the year, every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday that school is in session full day from 2:45-5:45. Look for posters in the hallway, listen for announcements, and talk to or email the advisors. There are lots of ways to get involved and to make your middle school experience more personalized for you! Clubs can vary year to year based on student interest. VII. WAYS FOR PARENTS TO GET INVOLVED Considerable experience and related evidence indicates that meaningful involvement of parents/guardians and other caregivers in the schooling of children improve the quality of education significantly. The Board of Education believes that closer connections of parents/guardians and others responsible for the home care of the children with our schools can result in enhanced academic performance, improved behavior, and reduced absenteeism. Therefore, all parents, guardians and caregivers of students enrolled in our school district are encouraged to take an active role in the education of their children. Further, the Board believes that the professional staff must take whatever steps are necessary to facilitate a broad variety of opportunities for parents/guardians to connect frequently with the schools in which their children are enrolled, and with the overall system. These steps should include the following: ● Supporting parenting & developing parenting skills that support children’s learning ● Encouraging home to school communication ● Providing support to parents who get involved in their child’s learning ● Welcoming all families into our school & seeking their support and assistance ● Eliciting parent input on decisions that affect students and families ● Making available community resources to strengthen family & student engagement Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) PTSA is a vital link between the school, community and the parents it serves. Parents are urged to join and take an active part in the PTSA. For more information please go to: www.stratfordk12.org/floodmiddle/families/pta Communication Authentic two-way communication between the school and home is essential to building an effective partnership and fostering student achievement. Significant changes in your child’s life (ex. divorce, major illness or death in the family, etc.), should be shared with his/her teacher or school counselor in order to receive the appropriate support during difficult periods. There are many benefits that result from two-way dialogue: Continuity is created across the home and school settings. Parents can support/enhance what the teacher is trying to accomplish in class. Teachers can assist the parent(s) on issues the family may be facing.
Issues can be addressed early on before more significant problems surface. Students are ultimately aware that their teacher and parent(s) are working together toward a unified goal of student success! There are many ways your school may communicate with you. It is your responsibility to read or review any materials or events created for your benefit. The purpose of these items is to make sure you are aware of upcoming programs and activities, understand new policies, and are knowledgeable of expectations for the coming year. Here are some of the ways your school may communicate with you: Open House Standardized Test Reports Automated phone messages Twitter: @FloodFalcons Progress Reports/Report Cards Parent-Teacher Conferences PowerSchool Parent Portal E-blast messages
