Welcome to the Festival In these uncertain economic times it’s heartening to see sales of Festival Team: books actually rose last year with British publishing houses Board of Trustees: collectively breaking all previous sales records. And no wonder Patricia Grayburn (President), when there are so many brilliant books and authors around. Andrew Hodges (Chairman), More than 50 writers will be joining us this October for what Eleanor March (Vice Chairman), promises to be a truly inspiring and entertaining week. In this Gordon Jackson, Jennifer Powell, centenary year for women’s suffrage, we have several events Sue Sturgeon, Debbie Drury, John Thorp dedicated to women who have made a difference from Miranda Seymour on computer pioneer, Ada Lovelace, to Jenni Murray on Treasurer: international women who have shaped our world from Joan of Arc Claire Morris to Madonna. Diane Atkinson charts the fight for women's right to Festival Patrons: vote, and we celebrate female poets, too. Comedian Jo Brand joins Elizabeth Buchan, Michael Buerk, us to reveal her unique take on life as a woman. Adele Parks, Michael Rosen, Acclaimed author Matt Haig discusses how to stay sane and feel Fay Weldon, Timothy West, human in our hi-tech world, while science broadcaster, Adam Professor Max Lu Rutherford, reveals what it means to be human in the first place. Co-Festival Directors: Former BBC war correspondent Martin Bell, issues an impassioned Alex Andrews & Jane Beaton plea to put the substance back into news, while journalist Max Festival PR: Hastings presents an enthralling reassessment of the Vietnam War.
