This course combines sections on Knowledge, Regional Skills and Professional skills (details below) to help the student provide the best Tourist Guide services to visitors to Scotland. CITY OF GLASGOW PARTNERSHIP The STGA are delighted to be working in partnership with the dynamic City of Glasgow College (CGC) who share our vision, our commitment to accredited learning and bring expertise in the latest technologies available for students. From August 2020 the Core Knowledge lecture sessions and assessments will be delivered and marked by CGC . The College will be streaming the lectures on Wednesday evenings at 6pm as per the schedule below and we hope this will encourage students from around Scotland to join our Blue Badge Course. Lectures will be interactive sessions and will then be available to students to revisit as suits their individual availability after the initial delivery. Core Knowledge is in four sections – Land, People, Arts and Society, and for each section there will be an essay assessment issued and marked by the College as part of the STGA Course requirements. Successful completion of the College section will earn candidates an SCQF Level 7 certificate of education which is independent of the STGA Course and can be used as evidence towards any future academic qualifications candidates may wish to pursue. ABOUT OUR ORGANISATION / BEING A BLUE BADGE GUIDE THE SCOTTISH TOURIST GUIDES ASSOCIATION The STGA is the accrediting body and membership organisation for professional tourist guides in Scotland. The STGA is a company limited by guarantee and has a voluntary Board of Directors and an office in Stirling with a Business Support Administrator, an Office Manager and a part-time Bookkeeper. The STGA also employs a Training Manager. STGA Membership: • Ordinary Members (Blue Badge Guides) – qualified to guide throughout Scotland • Regional Affiliates (Green Badge Guides) - qualified to guide in a specific operational area of Scotland • Site Affiliates (Yellow Badge Guides) - qualified to guide in specific sites or on fixed routes • Student Members – students training for the Blue or Green Badge • Non-practising Members – Blue Badge guides not currently working • Retired Ordinary Members – Blue Badge guides who have retired • Honorary Members – individuals who have given outstanding service to STGA • Associates – organisations who wish to be associated with STGA Quality Standards The STGA is a member of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) and the European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (FEG) and subscribes to the FEG Quality Charter and the WFTGA Code of Practice. All members and affiliates of STGA subscribe to the STGA Code of Conduct and Standards or Performance. The STGA training programmes comply with European and International Standards for the qualification and training of tourist guides, especially EN/BS15565 Tourism Services – Requirements for the provision of professional tourist guide training and qualification programmes. STGA operates a voluntary CPD (Continuing Professional Development) scheme for members. Accreditation Levels The STGA accreditation is benchmarked to the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) as follows: • Blue Badge: SCQF Level 7 (Higher National Certificate equivalent) • Green Badge: SCQF Level 7 (Higher National Certificate equivalent) • Yellow Badge: SCQF Level 5 (National 5 equivalent) Definition of a Tourist Guide: EN13809 of the European Committee of Standardisation (CEN) A person who guides visitors in the language of their choice and interprets the cultural and natural heritage of an area which person normally possesses an area-specific qualification usually issued and/or recognised by the appropriate authority. 13
In Scotland the STGA is the only authority under the terms of the definition. The above definition is distinct from that of a tour manager, tour director or escort as defined by CEN as follows: Person who manages an itinerary on behalf of the tour operator ensuring the programme is carried out as described in the tour operator's literature and sold to the traveller/consumer and who gives local practical information. Tour managers may or may not be tourist guides as well. They are not trained or licensed to work in specific areas unless they have the proper requirements or legal right, depending on the region. Employment for Tourist Guides in Scotland: Scottish Tourist Guides (Blue and Green Badge) are self-employed, freelance guides and work for a variety of clients including tour operators, cruise ship ground-handlers, conference organisers, corporate clients, public bodies and individual visitors. Blue Badge guides are qualified to guide throughout Scotland and Green Badge guides are qualified within a specific region of Scotland. STGA members and affiliates are usually self-employed and as such are responsible for generating their own income. The amount and type of work undertaken by individual members varies considerably. The majority of members travel with visitors on extended tours of a general or specialist nature. Some members do only part-time or local guiding from choice. Guides need to be flexible and some combine guiding with other work. It must be appreciated that demand for guides fluctuates markedly with the seasons and global economic changes. One benefit of membership is a full-page listing online for every Full Member through the STGA website. The STGA has a centralised booking service as a facility for its members and the travel trade, but our members receive over 90% of their work from other sources. The majority of members develop good working relationships with various agents and obtain direct repeat bookings. STGA also markets all Full Members through industry contacts and government organisations and attends appropriate international trade fairs and promotional activities. Benefits of STGA Membership • A Blue Badge issued by the STGA • Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance through the STGA • Listing online on the STGA website • Automatic inclusion in STGA Booking System through online enhanced entries • Access to STGA online Resources • Access to the Continuous Professional Development scheme • Participation in activities organised by the STGA and its Regional Branches • Representation at all levels of the Tourism Industry in Scotland and beyond • Membership of FEG (European Federation of Tourist Guide Associations) and the WFTGA (World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations). • Marketing opportunities • Networking opportunities • Advice and support on professional guiding matters from colleagues and through the Board of Directors, all of whom are active tourist guides • Kudos, through UK and world-wide recognition of the quality of a Blue Badge tourist guide qualification Some additional words of advice Personal Requirements: Curiosity, enthusiasm, warmth and people skills, self-motivation, physical and emotional stamina, confidence, flexibility, clarity of speech and excellent communication skills. • Job Requirements (Blue and Green Badge): • Research in-depth information for guided tours of the area of qualification • Plan and agree itineraries and interpretation for guided tours in the area of qualification • Interpret the area of qualification in depth 14
• Lead tour groups or individuals on vehicles, on foot and on sites • Provide practical information, advice and assistance • Resolve emergencies and problems • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, colleagues and visitors Manage a small business and maintain appropriate records Stamina and good health are essential for tourist guides. The work of a tourist guide is very demanding. Hours can be long, e.g. starting with the arrival of the first aircraft at the airport and ending with a Scottish Evening ceilidh, with guiding commentary and courteous customer service throughout the day. Your next job might then involve getting up early in the morning, travelling for hours to get to the Highlands where you meet cruise ship guests for another full day excursion. Are you up for this? It is absolutely essential that you enjoy working with people. Understanding the stresses and strains of the traveller – jet lag, lack of sleep, sickness, unfamiliar environment and language, hotel and transport problems, and loss of valuables/luggage – is all part of the job of a tourist guide. The guide may be the only direct local contact for the visitor. Competition is considerable. This applies in particular to guides who only work in English. There are about 400 self-employed STGA Tourist Guides in Scotland and many more non-qualified guides too. The income of Blue and Green Badge Guides can be precarious. Your work may be seasonal, with long quiet periods, and it will fluctuate according to world events. Furthermore, each self-employed guide must also consider accident and sickness insurance, personal pension plans, National Insurance and Income Tax requirements. The Blue Badge Guide Training Course covers a lot of fascinating knowledge. However, it extends far beyond the mere acquisition of knowledge to the selection, presentation and delivery of that knowledge as well as tour management and customer service. Almost half of the course will involve the practical application of the knowledge you acquire. THE WORLD FEDERATION OF TOURIST GUIDE ASSOCIATIONS MACAU 2013 DECLARATION FOR TOURIST GUIDES AROUND THE WORLD 1. WFTGA declares that its member tourist guides act as ambassadors of their countries and regions and as caretakers of their area’s traditions, history, culture and environment. 2. WFTGA supports the definition of tourist guiding as an area-specific qualification, usually issued and/or recognised by the appropriate authority. WFTGA believes that any person without a qualification is not competent to interpret and explain the cultural and natural heritage and specialities of that area. 3. WFTGA declares it is not ethical or appropriate for anyone to work as a tourist guide without having the above qualifications. 4. WFTGA declares that tourist guides are essential to the tourism industry and should be acknowledged as professionals by tour operators, tourism stakeholders and local and/or national authorities and be fairly compensated. 5. WFTGA and its member tourist guides stand by our declaration that “We are the Professionals’’ who work in the best professional manner to achieve high standards of service and contribute to society. 15
