Chambly Canal multi-use path Editorial For many of us, bicycling symbolizes freedom, from early childhood all the way into adulthood. A means of discovery for children, independence for teenagers and active transportation for adults, bicycling lets us take a break from our daily routine and explore the world around us. I have fond memories of my first great cycling adventure. My friends and I decided to take the bike path that runs along the Chambly Canal, from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to Chambly. As a young boy, the 40-km or so round trip felt like a journey to the other end of the Earth. Everything impressed me: Île Sainte-Thérèse, the flora and fauna on Île Fryer, the passage near bridge no. 7, passing under thundering Highway 10, the speeds we could reach in the descent near the last canals, Fort Chambly and its rapids. But above all, the large ice cream cone we had to celebrate our return to Vieux-Saint-Jean, the “end of the line.” I remember sleeping so well that night, proud of my first 40-km bike ride “all in one day.” That’s the magic of bike riding: the sense of freedom, but also the memories you make. Haut-Richelieu has a multitude of safe cycling itineraries with gorgeous landscapes to discover. I invite you to explore the four corners of our beautiful region and make wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Chambly Canal multi-use path Being, here and now! Spring is ideal for a cycling excursion, as the temperatures are more comfortable than at the height of summer. While you can expect some wind at times, you will appreciate the cool breeze on your first outings. With its more than 300 km of bikeways, Haut-Richelieu boasts one of the largest cycling networks in Montérégie. An agricultural plateau, our region is relatively flat and the routes are mainly on the shoulders of roads, making it suitable for all cyclists, provided that everyone follows the road safety rules. Plan your departure from the tourist information office in Vieux-Saint- Jean to have access to the entire network. For accessible parking, consult the Vieux-Saint-Jean parking map. Lots P16 and P17 are free of charge and are only a 700-metre bike ride from the tourist information office located at 130 Rue du Quai. 5 - Guide to cyclo -tourism - Tourisme Haut-Richelieu
The bike paths For first-timers or families with young children, we recommend starting with the region’s bike paths. These are safe, marked paths that will allow you to enjoy and appreciate the sport without worrying about following a map. They offer rest stops with shade and sanitary facilities and there are patrollers onsite during the summer who can help if you need them, which adds an extra layer of safety. Bike paths are bikeways dedicated to cycling and are generally completely separate from vehicular traffic. They can be reserved solely for cyclists or be shared with other users, like walkers or inline skaters. These bike paths are part of broader cycling networks extending beyond the Haut-Richelieu regional county municipality (RCM). This is true for section 1 of the Route Verte, which borrows the Chambly Canal and La Montérégiade bike paths. The Piste du Lièvre bike path passes through the municipality of Lacolle, joining Route 223 and the Axe Cyclable de la Vallée-des-Forts. Towards the west, it joins the Sentier du Paysan, which crosses the Jardins-de-Napierville RCM. Chambly Canal multi-use path 7 - Guide to cyclo-tourism - Tourisme Haut-Richelieu

This former railway will take you through Haut-Richelieu’s beautiful countryside from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to Granby, passing through Farnham, over a distance of 48 km. It is a nice, quiet path through the heart of nature. Admire the woods and fields in a region where agriculture reigns. Please note that from May 1st to June 19th, the patrol team will only be present on weekends, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. From June 20th until Labour Day, they will be onsite seven days a week. Patrol phone number: 450-522-5488. See Tourisme Montérégie for the complete itinerary. We suggest biking the 20 km between Vieux-Saint- Jean and Vieux-Chambly to get there. Partly rock dust, partly paved, it is separate from vehicular traffic on 16 of its 20 km. In addition, interpretation panels along the path tell you about the history of this navigable waterway. You will be following the Richelieu River 6 on one side and the Chambly Canal National Historic Site on the other. Note that at Île Sainte-Thérèse, the path along the Chambly Canal is paved, making it perfect for inline skating. It’s one of the best places in the region to practise this sport. See Tourisme Montérégie for the complete itinerary. Cyclable roads Cyclable roads, or designated shared roadways, are roads in urban and rural areas that cyclists can use. They have markings on the pavement and are often shared with motor vehicles. In Haut-Richelieu, most of these roads are paved and have road- sharing signs. We usually only recommend them to experienced cyclists as many users do not always feel confident sharing a road with motor vehicles. Of course, if you follow the recommendations in the Safe Cycling Guide, you will be able to explore new horizons with greater peace of mind. A number of factors are taken into consideration when developing a bikeway, such as safety, the available space and the presence of parking spaces, to ensure the best suitability. As this cycling guide comes to an end, we believe it is important to explain the different types of bikeways you will encounter during your outings. Tips and safety recommendations In Quebec, there are a little over 5 million drivers and 3.5 million cyclists. That’s a lot of wheels! While it’s important that cyclists follow the rules of the road, drivers also need to exercise caution around cyclists. Drivers of Quebec, here’s a little reminder of the rules for more harmonious road sharing. Anticipate the presence of cyclists. You’re not the only one on the road! Cyclists have the right to use any road, except for highways and their on- and off-ramps. Keep your eyes peeled, both in the city and in rural areas. Look around before opening your door. It’s not because your car is parked that the danger is over! You have an obligation to check if the coast is clear before opening your door. This is one of the main causes of accidents involving cyclists and motorists. Be careful when turning right. Cyclists who are going straight have priority over vehicles turning right. Slow down and keep your distance. Passing a cyclist? Keep a reasonable lateral distance (at least one metre) between you and the cyclist when the speed limit is 50 km/h or less and a distance of 1.5 m if the speed limit is more than 50 km/h. The Highway Safety Code allows you to cross a solid line to pass a cyclist if you can do so safely. Cycling, even in winter! Enjoy biking and want to be physically active and play outside in winter? Winter is the perfect time to ride a fatbike (a bike with oversized tires). And it’s not just for cycling enthusiasts! Also called a snow bike, a fatbike is a mountain bike with huge tires, usually 10–13 cm (4–5 in.) wide. This extra volume makes it possible to reduce the air pressure in the tires, which improves traction on firm surfaces such as sand, mud and, of course, snow. Oversized tires are very versatile, but for a first outing, we recommend short, easy trails that are relatively flat, with turns that are not too sharp. If you want to try this sport in Haut-Richelieu, we recommend the trails in Venice-en-Québec. Want to try a fatbike, but not ready to buy one just yet? Fatbikes can be rented in the area, at Cycle LM. By the way, did you know that while you can’t turn your summer bike into a winter bike, you can use your snow bike in summer? 43 - Guide to cyclo-tourism - Tourisme Haut-Richelieu
Pump track (vélo-parc)! Pump tracks are closed tracks made up of several rollers (bumps) and berms (banked turns) without any flat sections. These tracks are designed for riders to be able to move forward using pumping motions, without needing to use their pedals. Basically, you flex your arms and legs on the bumps and turns to build up speed. The ideal bike to use on a pump track is one without a suspension, so that the energy generated by the pumping movements is not absorbed. A rigid bicycle frame is preferred, as well as a lower centre of gravity for the rider. That’s why BMX bikes are perfect for this discipline. This fun new activity is accessible to everyone. Children, adults, beginners, all are welcome to try. Even if you work from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., what are you doing between the hours of 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.? That’s nearly 20 hours a week you could be out exploring! The Tourisme Haut-Richelieu team has embraced this philosophy, compiling a list of activities in the area to give everyone the pleasure of an adventure even if short on time or money. Microadventures are generally short, simple, local and respectful of the environment. We are excited for you to discover the seasonal microadventures available in Haut-Richelieu. Forget everything you thought you knew and see Haut-Richelieu through fresh eyes! Remember, there’s no need to make things complicated. Just seize the moment and enjoy life! That’s what it means to be a microadventurer. So, whether you’re a resident or a visitor, the first thing you should do is get a general idea of what’s available in the region to see what might interest you. There are four main sectors to explore. 45- Guide to cyclo-tourism - Tourisme Haut-Richelieu
