Destination Markham Corporation www.visitmarkham.ca info@visitmarkham.ca Overview Destination Markham Corporation (DMC) is a newly-incorporated entity whose mission is to promote Markham as a remarkable destination, encourage tourism and stimulate the local business economy. The key tourism objectives are to research, develop, market, and grow Markham’s tourism economy, collaborating and building relationships with the hospitality industry, festivals and events, meeting/conference and travel planners, attraction operators, culture institutions, sports tourism, entertainment and recreation providers, the City of Markham and beyond. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, DMC has adapted initiatives and created the #MarkhamSafe campaign to help educate and support businesses as well as the public to eat, shop, and play in Markham safely, adhering to regulations and following guidance from government and public health officials at the federal, provincial, regional, and municipal levels. NEW: DMC Partnership Program Funding www.visitmarkham.ca/business-support/ Overview DMC is launching its first partnership program to provide support to tourism organizations who are working through the pandemic to keep their business open and facilitating projects for the recovery and revitalization of the visitor economy in Markham. The partnership program is offering the opportunity for a DMC contribution to the partnership up to 20% of the project cost to a maximum of $10,000. The level of support will be determined case-by-case, based on the strength and requirements of the project. Partnership Funding Categories: Apply for ONE of the Partnership Funding Categories: 1. Tourism Industry Association of Ontario www.tiaontario.ca/cpages/home membership@tiaontario.ca Overview The mission of the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario (TIAO) is to be a unified voice for the diverse tourism industry in Ontario in order to effectuate growth and prosperity. Collectively, they represent almost 200,000 businesses and 400,000 employees in their membership. They engage in government relations on behalf of Ontario’s tourism industry, working with the Ministries of Education, Labour, Finance, Infrastructure, Transportation, and Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries, among others. They advocate for further investment in Ontario’s tourism industry and strive to influence government policies that have the potential to impact it. Resources TIAO is responsible for awarding the #SafeTravelsStamp to stakeholders in the hospitality and tourism industries of Ontario. This stamp is an international symbol created by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) to signal to both current and potential travellers that a business, destination, or government follows globally standardized health and safety protocols, thus increasing consumer confidence. TIAO also provides pertinent information and timely updates on new and under review legislation through their website and newsletter, with exclusive members-only access to resources and a collaborative network of businesses and partners. Benefits TIAO is recognized as the umbrella government advocacy organization serving Ontario's diverse tourism industry. With $30 million from FedDev Ontario’s RRRF COVID-19 funding, TIAO provided financial support to Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) across southern Ontario, including Destination Markham, that have experienced significant revenue shortfalls since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. DMOs are essential to local tourism economies, contributing to the survival and recovery of tourism-dependent SMEs. POST Promise postpromise.com info@postpromise.com Overview The POST (People Outside Safely Together) Promise is a bilingual, national, and private sector-led initiative designed to help Canadians confidently and safely visit and work in local businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. It signifies a business’s commitment to implement and practice the five key steps to workplace safety, thus helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This program was founded by organizations including the Business Council of Canada, the Retail Council of Canada, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, and Restaurants Canada, among others, and has partners such as CIBC, Ford, Cadillac Fairview, McCarthy Tétrault, and the University of Toronto. The five key steps to workplace safety: 1. Maintain physical distancing 2. Stay home if unwell 3. Wear a face covering when required 4. Clean and disinfect regularly 5. Wash and sanitize hands Benefits & Resources The POST Promise brings together all businesses across industries to implement a common approach which is then communicated by a consistent visual cue. The POST Promise is NOT a “certification” or “approval” from any regulatory body. All businesses are still required to follow the laws and recommended guidelines from their local public health office and government bodies. Once completed, a business is provided with the communication and implementation tools needed, such as PDFs to print and sample social media content, to educate employees and make customers aware of the commitment that has been made. Overview The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) strives to support the travel and tourism industry around the world in its recovery efforts from COVID-19. In consultation with its members, governments, and health experts, and in compliance with guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the WTTC has developed common standards called “Global Protocols for the New Normal” in order to ensure the safety of workforces and travellers during and following the pandemic. These global protocols vary by industry, and each guiding document can be found on the WTTC website. Benefits & Resources The SafeTravels Stamp was created for travellers to recognize destinations and businesses which have adopted these global, standardized health and hygiene protocols. This common approach is then communicated by a consistent visual cue, encouraging visitors to confidently return and feel safe. MPL also offers a wide range of resources to assist small businesses and job seekers within the City of Markham through their workshops, newsletters and librarian assistance. Benefits & Resources MPL offers a new business newsletter, online programming, online business resources, and business books for Markham residents. They also host virtual programs each month related to business, careers, and health and wellness, among others. MPL also has a large database of resources to refer you to based on your business needs, such as educational and training platform access and other support programs. During the COVID-19 pandemic, MPL has featured many local businesses on their website and social media channels. Financial Business Supports - Federal Highly Affected Sectors Credit Availability Program (BDC HASCAP) Guarantee Business Development Bank of Canada https://www.bdc.ca/en/special-support/hascap?ref=shorturl-hascap The BDC HASCAP Guarantee provides guaranteed, low-interest loans of $25,000 to $1 million to small- and medium-sized businesses whose revenues have decreased by 50% or more for at least three months (not necessarily consecutive) as a result of COVID-19 to cover their operating costs. To qualify, businesses must have received payments from CEWS and/or CERS; otherwise, they must provide financial statements reflecting the qualifying revenue decrease. ✓ Repayment term of up to 10 years, principal payment deferral for up to 12 months, and 4% interest rate ✓ Available through your primary financial institution until June 30, 2021 Business Credit Availability Program (EDC BCAP) Guarantee Export Development Canada https://www.edc.ca/en/solutions/working-capital/bcap-guarantee.html# The EDC BCAP Guarantee provides guaranteed loans of up to $6.25 million to businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions whose revenues have decreased as a result of COVID-19 to cover their operating costs. Financial Business Supports - Federal continued Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/subsidy/emergency-wage-subsidy.html The CEWS helps eligible Canadian employers whose revenues have decreased as a result of COVID-19 by covering up to 75% of their employees’ wages, enabling businesses to prevent further job losses, re-hire workers, and ease back into normal operations. ✓ Last claim period ends on June 5, 2021 (proposed extension until September 25, 2021) ✓ Deadline to apply or modify is 180 days after the end of each 4-week claim period ✓ If you missed the deadline for a claim period, the CRA will now consider your request under certain circumstances within 30 days of that claim period’s deadline Canada Emergency Rent Subsidy (CERS) https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/subsidy/emergency-rent-subsidy.html The CERS provides rent or mortgage support of up to 65% of eligible expenses directly to qualifying businesses and organizations. Those whose operations have been significantly restricted by a mandatory public health order can receive an additional 25% for the claim period. Financial Business Supports - Federal continued Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund Black Entrepreneurship Program (BEP) https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/150.nsf/eng/home The BEP is a partnership between the federal government, Black-led business organizations, and financial institutions, with an investment of up to $221 million over four years. As part of the program, the Black Entrepreneurship Loan Fund will provide loans of up to $250,000 to Black business owners and entrepreneurs across Canada.
