Welcome to Grant Sawyer Middle School MOTTO “Make Every Second Count” SCHOOL COLORS Purple and Gold The next few years will be some of the most exciting and also most challenging for students and parents. This handbook was developed to help everyone understand the expectations for success. Please take time to review the information and discuss any questions with a teacher, counselor, or administrator. Grant Sawyer Middle School (GSMS) knows that academic performance and achievement are critical to success in middle school and beyond. To achieve this, our students are expected to work hard and be kind. GSMS relies upon the following structures to support our learning community: 1. Students are divided into four “houses” representing the ideal qualities of a Mustang: ● Sabio - the blue house of Knowledge ● Creativo - the yellow house of Creativity ● Valeroso - the red house of Courage ● Amable - the green house of Friendliness Each “House” works to earn points by their behavior, work ethic, and participation. This friendly competition results in rewards and special activities. 2. Each grade level is assigned an administrator and counselor who will work in tandem to support students as they matriculate through GSMS. This structure provides the student, parent/guardian, administrator and counselor the time to forge a community of support. ● 6th Grade - Assistant Principal, Ms. Karn and Counselor, Ms. Shaw ● 7th Grade - Assistant Principal, Mr. Johnson and Counselor, Mr. Dudschus ● 8th Grade - Assistant Principal, Ms. Nguyen and Counselor, Mr. Wagner 3. Every Mustang has daily access to technology. Students will use a variety of technologies for research, collaboration, and communication. Exciting things are happening in the classroom! At all times, our school embraces a rigorous curriculum with adherence to the Nevada State Academic Standard. A visible administration, engaging and caring teachers, and supportive and involved parents help make the middle school years a wonderful experience for our students. We hope you will feel free to come and visit with us at any time. We are pleased to introduce our handbook to you. It’s a good way to get to know your child’s school. After reading the information, if you have any questions, please call us at 799-5980. We are always available for you and your child. Return to Table of Contents

Parent/School Communication The commitment of parents/guardians to the education of their children is critical to any success as schools work diligently to meet the diverse learning needs of the Clark County School District student population. We know that navigation through the offices and school personnel can be daunting to parents. To assist parents in this regard, some simple tips and guidelines have been developed. We encourage parents to use the parent portal of Infinite Campus regularly to view their child’s grades and attendance. Additionally, this portal may be used to communicate with their student’s teachers. Please call the school if you require login credentials for the parent portal. If there are concerns in the following areas, here are some ways for parents to communicate: Classroom Issue: If you wish to speak to the teacher, contact the school at (702) 799-5980 to leave a message for the teacher to call you. Please allow 24 - 48 hours for a return call or email. All teachers can be emailed through the parent portal of Infinite Campus and the Staff Directory page at sawyerms.org. School Issue: Parents should contact any school administrator. They will help you identify the correct individual who can address your concern. Please remember that a school administrator’s day is unpredictable and an allowance of 24 - 48 hours to return your phone call is greatly appreciated. Bullying/Cyberbullying Reporting: At GSMS, student safety is our top priority! We believe that students cannot be successful if they do not feel safe and comfortable at school. If you or your child is aware of a student who is being bullied or mistreated, please report the case using SafeVoice Nevada (CLICK HERE TO ACCESS). Public Concern Forms: Public Concern Forms are available at all CCSD schools, the Greer Education Center located at 2832 E. Flamingo Ave., and the Sahara Administrative Offices located at 5100 West Sahara Ave. It is strongly suggested that parents/guardians notify and attempt to resolve the issue with school or performance zone personnel before taking this step. Often, a solution is readily obtained at these levels to the satisfaction of those involved. School Organizational Team (SOT) Meetings: As prescribed in the law, each school has created a team made up of parents, teachers, support staff, students, and/or community members to assist and advise with many important decisions impacting the school. The team will be responsible for developing the school’s Plan of Operation. Using data to guide key decisions focused on student achievement. Lockers are not available to students. The students are responsible for their own belongings. Students keep their backpacks on the floor during classes and at lunch. Skipping or cutting one class period is classified as truant. Tardy Policy: GSMS students are expected to make every effort to arrive at classes on time each day. Students should be in their respective classrooms prior to the bell ringing to avoid being marked tardy by the teacher. Students who arrive late to school to start the day should be signed into the front office to get a pass to class. Discipline Good discipline requires respect; respect for parents, teachers, peers, rules, and oneself. At GSMS, we believe that students who are kind and work hard, will succeed. This success will help them develop quality relationships throughout their lives. In order to cultivate this attitude, the following rules, expectations, and consequences will apply. Classroom Rules: GSMS strives to create a positive and productive learning environment. Each teacher will have a discipline plan for use in his/her classroom. The plan will include the rules for the class and consequences for breaking the rules. The plan will be shared with students during the first days of school and posted, so students can review. Teachers will handle minor disciplinary offenses with private conferences, detentions, phone calls to parents, parent conferences, and a referral to the counselor.
