This research used explanatory sequential mixed methods to examine how the dimensions of culture, uncertainty and trust influence supply chain collaboration; and how supply chain collaboration influences the dimensions of collaborative advantage and firm performance in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector Supervisors: Professor MJA Naude and Dr SS Soni Anifowose, Oladotun, BSc(UBowen), MSc(EasternU) Economics Thesis: Military expenditure, institutional quality and inclusive growth in BRICS economies (1970-2018) Citation: This study considered the relationship between military expenditure, institutional quality and inclusive growth in the BRICS countries. An inclusive growth index was generated for each of the BRICS countries. The research revealed that Russia has the highest inclusive growth followed by China, Brazil, South Africa and India. Further the ARDL analysis showed that only Russia was able to maximise the relationship between their military expenditure and their institutional quality. Supervisors: Dr A Omolade and Professor P Nyatanga and Dr SZE Mukorera 6 UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL
Awolusi, Olawumi Dele, BSc(Economics)(UAdo-Ekiti), MBA(FUTA) Economics Thesis: Socio-economic, environmental and institutional sustainability and economic growth in BRICS: What are the best policy options? Citation: The research explored how BRICS countries can work together to advance the goals of economic growth without compromising individual member countries aspirations to sustainability. The study revealed wide- ranging relationships among economic growth and the novel composite socioeconomic, institutional, and environmental sustainability indices, and offers varied radical policy options to improve sustainability in the bloc. Supervisor: Professor J Mbonigaba Engelbrecht, Samuel Douglas, BComHons Management Thesis: Social deprivation and government employment of the non-profit sector: A two-phased interrogation of the welfare policy-practice phenomenon in KwaZulu-Natal Citation: In Kwazulu-Natal alone, government spends almost R1-billion every year in contracting non-profit organisations to provide welfare services to KZN’s less well off. The research entailed a detailed five-year investigation of every contracted welfare non-profit organisation in the province, showing for the first time that government’s welfare offering is not measurably changing lives for the better. Supervisors: Dr F Du Toit and Professor BW Mcarthur Ezennia, Joseph Chikwendu, MBA(MANCOSA) Management Thesis: Factors influencing foreign-owned micro businesses - A case of Durban Citation: The study investigated the factors influencing foreign-owned micro businesses, with particular reference to African immigrant-owned micro businesses in Durban. Sociological and psychological factors, as well as innovation and the need for high achievement, were investigated. A conceptual framework was developed indicating the various factors that impact on African immigrant-owned micro businesses and result in successful entrepreneurship and sustainability. Supervisor: Dr E Mutambara Gondwe, Grace, BSocSc(UMalawi), MA(UMalawi) Economics Thesis: Analysis of the impact of foreign aid on economic growth in COMESA Citation: The study investigated how foreign aid, as one of the region’s key development financing resources, influenced economic growth in COMESA countries. Jeje, Kafigi Nicholaus, BBA(UDarEsSalaam), MBA(UDarEsSalaam) Management Thesis: Developing a framework for entrepreneurial strategies and SME performance in Tanzania-based bakeries. Citation: Using a mixed methods approach - the concurrent nested design and a multi-stage sampling technique - , and based on feedback provided through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, this study developed a framework of entrepreneurial strategies and SME performance in Tanzania-based bakeries. The framework enlightens the strategies that can drive the competitiveness of Tanzanian SMEs particularly the bakeries. Supervisor: Dr V Naidoo La Foy, Gabriella Bernadette, BLaws, LLM Law Thesis: Local government in the constitutional dispensation: Defining the limits of local government’s legislative and executive authority. Citation: The study investigated the implementation of the division-of-powers provisions in the Constitution. The judicial interpretation of the constitutional scheme for the allocation of powers was compared with the legislative, fiscal, intergovernmental, and administrative practice of governance in democratic South Africa. Various reasons for the challenges identified in the implementation process were explored and interventions which could improve the efficiency and efficacy of current state administration were suggested. Supervisors: Professor DW Freedman and Professor GE Devenish Magweva, Rabson, MCom(USci & Tech) Finance Thesis: Significance of infrastructure investments in emerging markets to institutional investors. Citation: The research ascertained whether institutional investors can derive significant benefits if they commit their resources into infrastructure in emerging markets. The study revealed that unlisted infrastructure investments can increase portfolio performance and dampen portfolio risk. Infrastructure investments are imperfect inflation hedges and their returns’ volatility is persistent. This implies that institutional investors must look beyond infrastructure to hedge inflation and be prepared to face liquidity challenges in emerging markets. Supervisor: Professor M Sibanda Mashingaidze, Mugove, BComHons(Retail Management)(CUT), MBA(Solusi) Entrepreneurship Thesis: Strategy formulation and financial performance in selected small and medium enterprises in Zimbabwe Citation: This research investigated strategy formulation and its implications on the financial performance of Zimbabwean manufacturing SMEs. This research advances our understanding of the strategy dynamics in SMEs and its implications on the development of the SME sector in a developing country context. Supervisor: Professor MA Phiri 8 UNIVERSITY OF KWAZULU-NATAL
Meyiwa, Ayanda, BCom, PGDip(MarStud), MCom Leadership Studies Thesis: Articulating South Africa’s port doctrine for a democratic developmental state Citation: To address multiple port pricing and governance challenges, the study focused on ex-ante articulating a port doctrine that best fits South Africa’s context of a democratic developmental state. Using document and content analysis to examine diverse themes from port stakeholders, shortcomings in port devolution and maritime policy were identified. The study’s key contribution is a new, contextually relevant port paradigm that enhances strategic social, macroeconomic and maritime policy alignment. The findings reveal that financial sustainability is stifled by small-scale deposits and inefficiency; that explicit deposit insurance improves liquidity; and that although a trade-off and mission drift do not exist in outreach depth, a trade-off exists in outreach breadth.
