Inspiring excellence, transforming lives through quality, impact, and care. ABOUT THE UFS The University of the Free State (UFS) has a proud history as one of the oldest, most respected institutions of higher education in South Africa. It opened its doors in Bloemfontein in 1904 as the Grey University College, with six students in the Humanities. Today it is a multi-campus institution, with two diverse campuses in Bloemfontein and one in Qwaqwa in the scenic Eastern Free State, accommodating more than 40 000 students in its seven faculties (Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Health BLOEMFONTEIN CAMPUS Sciences, the Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Theology and Religion), with an increasing number of international students and associates, and an ever-widening scope of active involvement in and contribution to its surrounding communities. For the past 118 years, the UFS has been delivering quality graduates who have made their mark in various sectors. What sets the institution apart is its holistic student support initiatives, enabling it to achieve some of the highest success rates in the country. Delivering students who are in high demand in the global job market, remains a top priority. An established network of industry partners and close collaboration with the public and private sectors, as well as a continuous process of transformation and curriculum renewal, dovetail QWAQWA CAMPUS to produce highly employable graduates. UFS research efforts are driven by dedicated scholars, some of whom are international leaders in their fields, with industry and social impact and real-world application. Through the principle of engaged scholarship, the UFS responds to societal needs, using its scholarly and professional expertise with an intentional public purpose and benefit. The UFS is an institution that goes all out to provide its students and staff with an outstanding university experience. Anchored in a value bedrock of social justice, respect, and caring, the institution has managed to remain steadfastly relevant in a challenging and ever- changing national higher education landscape. DEVELOPMENT OF THE UFS CREST OVER MORE THAN A CENTURY 1904 Up to 1935, the same coat of arms was used as the Grey College School. 1935 By 1935, with the name change to University College of the Orange Free State, the coat of arms fell into disuse, especially among students. 1947 In 1947, an agreement between management and students led to the new motto Per Fidem ad Sapientiam (Through faith to wisdom). 1950 In 1952, it was changed to In Deo Sapientiae Lux (In God is the light of wisdom). The traditional orange, white and blue, linking the UFS to the South African national colours, changed in the late 1990s. The orange was replaced by cherry red. 2 0 11 The academic brand - the historic University of the Free State crest that has been the symbol of the university since 1952, has evolved to embrace the aesthetic expectations of the stakeholders. The shape of the traditional academic shield has been simplified and contemporised. Much of the symbolism of the crest remains intact, acknowledging the location of the UFS brand as one of the country’s premier institutions of higher education, with a proud history of academic excellence and an ever evolving, vibrant culture. 4 U F S G R A D U AT I O N P R O G R A M M E

FA C U LT Y O F H E A LT H S C I E N C E S DOCTORAL DEGREES SCHOOL OF CLINICAL MEDICINE DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY WITH SPECIALISATION IN COMMUNITY HEALTH VAN ZYL, Sanet Sanet van Zyl was born in Johannesburg on 31 January 1966. She matriculated at Carletonville High School in 1983 and obtained her MBChB degree in 1989 at the University of the Free State. She was appointed as Medical Officer in the Department of Family Medicine, obtained a Master’s degree in Family Medicine in 1994, and worked in the Department until 1997. She was appointed as Lecturer / Senior Medical Officer in the Department of Medical Physiology in 1998. The Department amalgamated with the Department of Anatomy and Cell Morphology to form the Department of Basic Medical Sciences in 2002. She became Head of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences in 2008. With her thesis, titled: CHRONIC DISEASES OF LIFESTYLE: A RISK ASSESSMENT AND HEALTH PROMOTION FRAMEWORK FOR A RURAL AND URBAN PRIMARY HEALTH CARE SETTING IN THE FREE STATE PROVINCE, the candidate contributes to scholarship on the burden of the chronic diseases of lifestyle (CDL) in the Free State province. With this contribution, she focused on the principles of risk assessment and health promotion in rural and urban communities to minimise the negative impact of CDL. Using a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, the candidate identified CDL risk factors in the communities as well as barriers and training needs for the effective implementation of CDL programmes. The study presents a tailor-made community-based patient-centred approach to facilitate the development of focused and effective primary healthcare interventions for CDL in resource-constrained areas of the Free State province. Promoter: Prof WH Kruger Co-Promoter: Prof CM Walsh DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY WITH SPECIALISATION IN MEDICAL PHYSICS RAMONAHENG, Keamogetswe Keamogetswe Ramonaheng matriculated from Eunice High School, Bloemfontein, in 2000 and obtained her tertiary education at the University of the Free State (UFS). She obtained her B.Med.Sc degree in 2006, followed by a B.Med.Sc (Honours) in 2008. After completing her internship at Universitas Academic Hospital (UAH) in 2010 with a Post-graduate Diploma in Medical Physics, she was appointed as a qualified Medical Physicist and Lecturer in the Department of Medical Physics at the Faculty of Health Sciences, UFS, and promoted to Assistant Manager at UAH in 2011. She completed her M.Med.Sc specialising in Medical Physics for Nuclear Medicine in 2014. With her thesis, titled: ACCURACY OF LUTETIUM-177 SPECT ACTIVITY QUANTIFICATION AND PATIENT-SPECIFIC DOSIMETRY: A MONTE CARLO STUDY, the candidate makes a valuable contribution to the body of knowledge for personalised dosimetry in radionuclide therapy using hybrid SPECT/CT imaging. The study used patient-specific voxel-based models created from Computed Tomography images and incorporated Monte Carlo simulations of SPECT images to mimic clinically realistic Lutetium-177 activity distribution patient images. These SPECT images allowed her to virtually assess the accuracy of SPECT activity quantification in the simulated patients and thoroughly recognize the many factors related U F S G R A D U AT I O N P R O G R A M M E 15

This novel method of virtually evaluating the accuracy of activity quantification has enabled the candidate to determine the accuracy of personalised dosimetry for Lutetium-177 radionuclide therapy. The study will benefit future patients receiving Lutetium-177 radionuclide therapy. Thus far, two articles have been published in international accredited journals from this thesis, and a third manuscript has been submitted for publication. She matriculated at Diamantveld High School in 2001. At the University of the Free State she obtained the degree B.Med.Sc in 2004, B.Med.Sc Hons with distinction in 2005, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Physics with distinction in 2007. In 2011 she obtained the degree Master of Medical Science and Doctor of Philosophy in 2022. She started her career as a Medical Physicist Bloemfontein. Since 2008 she has been working as a Medical Physicist on the joint staff establishment of the Department of Health and University of the Free State. With her thesis, titled: AN IMAGE GUIDED ADAPTIVE RADIOTHERPY STRATEGY FOR CERVIX CANCER TREATMENT BASED ON EQUIVALENT UNIFORM DOSE, the candidate contributes to the knowledge on external beam radiotherapy for cervix cancer patients focusing on designing an approach that balances workload and excellence. Image data of cervix cancer was used to quantify tumor and organ motion. Innovative radiotherapy treatment methods were studied in an attempt to reduce toxicities associated with treatment, while maintaining tumoricidal doses. Several approaches to perform treatment adaptation to a changing tumour environment, while retaining a minimum effort workload, were investigated. The outcomes of this study established several clinically feasible solutions for high quality treatments in both low/high income countries. Even with limited resources, patients can now be treated with exceptional quality techniques, irrespective of the equipment available for this.
