COMMITTEE STRUCTURE Education. Finance Buildings and Resources HR Research Parent Governors do not sit on the HR committee
WHAT DO THEY DO? • Volunteers • Strategic leadership and accountability • Corporate – no individual can make decisions in isolation • Main responsibility of finances (delegated authorities to the Headteacher)
• set the aims and objectives for the school • set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives • set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives • monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives • be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)
• They ask questions • They can act calmly for the greater good • They can manage complex information • They visit the school and speak with children under the guidance of the Headteacher • They look for possibilities rather than obstructions • They focus on the big picture and strategy not necessarily the detail of operational matters • They don’t run the school
A PARENT GOVERNOR IS A REPRESENTATIVE AND NOT A DELEGATE OF PARENTS PARENTS SHOULD NOT SEE YOU AS THEIR ‘GO TO’ TO REPORT MATTERS. PARENT GOVERNORS ARE A REPRESENTATIVE VOICE ON THE GOVERNING BODY PARENT GOVERNORS ARE ELECTED BY OTHER PARENTS AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO ESTABLISH A RAPPORT WITH THE PARENTAL BODY THAT ELECTED YOU, WHILE CONTINUING TO MAINTAIN A STRATEGIC APPROACH TO SCHOOL GOVERNANCE
WHAT IS THE • COMMITMENT? 5-6 Full governing body meetings a year held during the school day (currently 10-12) with lunch with children afterwards • 5-6 Committee meetings (we ask that parent governors are on one/two committees) • Attend school events and talk with staff, children and parents. Be visible. • 2 years • Visit the school during school time for focused visits • Be a link governor
