GORDONBROCK WEEKLY FRIDAY 28TH JANUARY 2022 Dear Parents/Carers and Children, This week has been another fantastic week at Gordonbrock and today marks the start of the borough’s London Borough of Culture Year. As a school we took part in We Are Lewisham's first Creative Challenge of 2022! At midday, Gordonbrock with other schools across the borough danced along to the Lewisham Anthem from The Midi Music Company with moves from the official LBoC Bop which was choreographed by IRIE! Dance Theatre. If you would like to learn the official Bop click on the following link: https://youtu.be/2rzO9LDb-Gs?list=TLGG1QWiM7jZFmAyNzAxMjAyMg This week has seen Gordonbrock children engaged in activities and learning where the children have been investigating maths fractions, sponge printing of the Solar System, researching 3D shapes, building a rocket using 2D giant polydrons, curating a fraction museum, exploring the Moon and its textures and looking at household objects from the past. Have a lovely weekend and see you all next week! Mrs Wright T oday Lewisham borough has kicked off the London Borough of Culture year with lots of celebratory events, activities and performances. London Borough of Culture puts culture at the heart of local communities, and Lewisham’s Day One does just that, with artists in residence in every ward of the borough leading everything from sing-a-longs, spoken word and sculpture-making from abandoned objects. Young people are at the heart of We Are Lewisham and will get everyone moving on Day One. At the strike of midday, every primary school student in the borough was asked to perform the LBOC BOP, a specially choreographed dance to usher in the new year of culture. Later in the year, young people will lead on We Are Lewisham's call to action on the climate emergency. At 6.30pm there will be projections at Piccadilly Circus bringing the stories of the people of Lewisham into the heart of London. Lewisham is the third London Borough to be crowned London Borough of Culture, after Waltham Forest in 2019 and Brent in 2020. It was transformative for those boroughs, embedding culture into fabric of how councils and residents work together. It promises to leave a long lasting legacy in Lewisham too; partnerships between the council and arts sector have deepened and Artists of Change will be embedded into the council to test new ways of working and encouraging thinking from different perspectives. London Borough of Culture has given Londoners the opportunity to experience the capital’s fantastic cultural riches and increase the level of participation in the arts and creativity across the city. We Are Lewisham promises to be a beautiful shared year, where grassroots creativity shines and the potential of young Londoners is unleashed. Wash your hands, roll up your sleeves and get cooking. Develop a love of cooking and learn a vital life skill in the process by preparing and cooking food. Not only are you making something delicious to eat, you’re also applying the principles of a healthy and varied diet as well as learning a range of cooking techniques. This week why not make Classic Lasagne A family favourite that’s as tasty as it is satisfying. This recipe has some great shortcuts, making it nice and easy; and it’s versatile – the sauce can also be used for a bolognese or chilli con carne. Ingredients (serves 6 ) For the sauce: 500g 5% fat beef mince 1 carrot 1 mug of frozen onions 1 mug of frozen sliced mixed peppers 2 tbsp tomato purée 1 tin of chopped tomatoes 2 tbsp low-salt gravy granules To assemble: 2 x 25g sachets of white sauce mix 2 mugs semi-skimmed milk 40g grated mozzarella cheese 9 sheets of lasagne Method 1. Heat a large, deep, non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Once hot, tip in the mince and break it up with a wooden spoon. Cook for around 10 minutes, until the mince is evenly browned. 2. Peel and grate the carrot, then add this along with the frozen onions and peppers to the pan. Cook for a few minutes more to soften, stirring often. 3. Once the onions are soft, add the tomato purée and cook for 2-3 minutes. Pour in the chopped tomatoes, then fill the tin with water and add to the pan. Stir in the gravy granules. Bring it to a gentle bubble and cook over a low-medium heat, stirring often, for around 45 minutes until the sauce has thickened. 4. Pop the oven on at 180C, then make the white sauce. Pour the milk into a pan and add the white sauce powder. Whisk together until the sauce thickens, as per the packet instructions. 5. Now build the lasagne. Into a deep ovenproof dish, spoon in a good layer of the sauce, then lay on 3 sheets of lasagne and spoon over a nice covering of the white sauce. Repeat this process 2 more times, making sure to cover the final layer of lasagne sheets just with white sauce. Sprinkle over the cheese and a bit of pepper, then cook in the hot oven for 45 minutes. Then serve it onto plates and enjoy! Children, please remember to always ask an adult to help you when preparing food and cooking.

Saturday 22nd January 2022 A new year, but the season continued on a very cold Saturday morning on Blackheath Common. Both teams were looking forward to their games and needed no encouragement to play well. The matches were alternate between the two teams, with the boys starting first against Good Shepherd, who started the day at the top of the league table. The boy’s team was two players down before the days fixtures and so had to dig deep for both games. Despite the loss of two important players in Thomas and Ruben, the team really came together and played astonishingly well. The passing and opportunities they carved out deserved a big score-line in our favour. However, due to some good goalkeeping and some very narrow escapes, our team managed to score just the one goal, after some clever use of substitutions by Jason. Nevertheless, that was enough to win the game 1-0, with Luke scoring the winner and running off with the now obligatory ‘SIU’ Ronaldo celebration. This game was almost perfect from everyone, being one of our best performances so far this season, and picking just one POTM was very hard. The player chosen is Faustino, for his dominant defensive display and impressive passing out from the back. The girls had the second game against Fairlawn. The girls had so far dominated this league, winning all of their games without conceding a single goal. This would be tested today. Gordonbrock were able to effectively manage the game, and did not really look in too much danger at all. The midfield pair of Lizzie and Betty, and then Bea and Izzy, allowed our attackers to run the game. Anna and Racheal, with Neva deputising, have become a solid and reliable defensive team. Two goals from Lizzie and Faith secured a fully deserved 2-0 win. The POTM for this game went to Betty, a special mention for Alise who came on and showed a fantastic battling spirit in our attack. Up next was the boys’ second game, which was against Coopers Lane, another team at the top of the league table. Just like the first game, Gordonbrock boys battled and fought for every minute in a bid to come away with another 3 points. The energy from all the players never dropped and every player had another amazing game in the purple shirt. They won the game 2-1 with goals from Tyler-Jai and Oliver. Toby picked up the POTM after another powerful attacking display, using his captaincy to encourage and motivate his players as he led by example. Special mention to Luke, whose energy served as a great option and showed real character. The final game of the weekend was the girls against Torridon, and everyone was desperate for a perfect weekend of results. This game was very similar to the boy’s first game, with many chances and possession mostly in our hands, or rather at our feet. Gordonbrock won the game 1-0, with a second half goal from Faith. This means that both Gordonbrock teams came away with maximum points from the weekend and some absolutely huge performances from all players. POTM goes to Clemence for driving the team forward at every opportunity. Teamsheet: Boys: Toby (captain), Danny, Reuben, William, Sammy, Tyler-Jai, Faustino, Oliver, Luke Girls: Faith (captain), Clemence, Betty, Martha, Neva, Racheal, Alise, Bea, Lizzie, Isobel, Anna A big thank you to Jason for coaching and to the parents and carers for attending and supporting the team. Mr Costello, PE Coordinator.
Big Garden Birdwatch 2022 Grab your binoculars and celebrate the 43rd Big Garden Birdwatch by recording your garden birds this January. The annual Big Garden Birdwatch returns on 28th–30th January 2022 for the UK’s largest garden-based citizen science project. What is the Big Garden Birdwatch? 2022 marks the 43rd RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, which sees keen birdwatchers across the UK join the largest garden wildlife citizen science project by spending one hour tracking the birds they see in their gardens. Last year was the biggest Birdwatch ever, with over one million people taking part and counting more than 17 million birds. Why take part? Not only is it a great way to enjoy a spot of winter twitching, but it is also a vital opportunity for the RSPB to keep tabs on the population of British birds. In the past 50 years Great Britain has lost more than 38 million birds. The RSPB continue to rely on the help of people across the country to help record the birds they see in order to provide a vital snapshot of which species are thriving, which are struggling, and perhaps provide clues as to why, and how they can be protected. It also supplies conservationists with data tracing those birds that are doing well. How to take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch This year’s event takes place on 28th — 30th January 2022. The public is asked to spend just one hour watching and recording the birds in their garden or local green space, then send their results to the RSPB. To take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch 2022, simply watch the birds in your garden, from your balcony, or local park for one hour at some point over the three days the Birdwatch is taking place. Only count the birds that land, not the ones flying by. Click on the following link to get involved https://www.rspb.org.uk/get- involved/activities/birdwatch/birdwatch-take-part/ and receive a free guide that will help you to identify our most common garden birds. There’s no need to prepare for the Bird Watch, but if you want to get ready early, you could put up a bird feeder to attract more birds to your garden, giving it a clean after each refill. The RSPB also recommends that you don’t tidy your garden up too much over winter, making sure there are plenty of seeds and berries available for wildlife to feed on during the cold months. It’s also good to leave out fresh water, making sure to keep it ice-free. Once you have recorded the birds that you’ve seen, simply submit your results online to the RSPB.
Dear Parents/Carers, We have been asked to share with you the following… The Friends of Hilly Fields will be back with our annual Big Garden Bird Watch this coming Sunday 30th January from 10.30 until 12.30. As usual, we'll have a guided bird walk leaving at 11am, or people can take a sur- vey sheet and do it in their own time. We'll be making seed balls for the birds and a quiz for children. If people are interested and can't make it, we have a bespoke sheet with the most likely birds to be seen (attached here). This is also available as a download from our nature blog. http://hillyfields.blogspot.com/ All the best, Rachel and Team on behalf of the Friends of Hilly Fields
N ext week on Wednesday is the day to celebrate all things hedgehog, and although it’s the hibernation season, there’s still plenty we can do for our favourite animal. Hedgehog numbers are sadly declining, but the good news is that with the right help, local populations can bounce back and thrive, even in urban areas. Now is the perfect time to get out into the garden and make small changes which will make a huge difference for hedgehogs. How to Make 1. Take a sheet of beige paper and fold it diagonally, then trim off the end so that you're left with a square piece of paper. 2. Unfold the paper and fold it diagonally the other way. Keep it folded with the long edge at the bottom and fold down the top so that the point meets the bottom edge. 3. Fold in the two edges so that the points meet in the centre. Then unfold them and fold them upwards so that the points meet at the top. 4. Tuck the two edges downwards into the pocket that you've created. Then turn it over and also fold the top edge downwards into the pocket. 5. Cut out two ear shapes from the same shade of beige paper and then cut out two inner ear shapes from a sheet of light pink paper and stick them onto the two ears. Then stick the ears to the corner book- mark on the long edge. 6. Take a sheet of brown paper and cut out a rounded spiky shape from the corner of the paper. Then slide it into the pocket so the spiky bit pokes out the top and stick it into place. Use a brown pen to draw on some spikes. 7. Stick two wiggle eyes to the front of the corner bookmark and use a black pen to draw on the nose at the point. Top Tip Use paper for this origami bookmark instead of card to make it easier when folding the shape together.
