The Golf is a perfect match for the new Volkswagen brand strategy. Its claim: “We make the future real.” Four fields of innovation form the basis for this strategy: Connected Community, Intuitive Usability, Automated Driving and Smart Sustainability. The I.D. BUZZ concept vehicle was developed based on these fields of innovation. They stand for: Connected Community In the future, Volkswagen will interconnect humans, cars and the environment via a Volkswagen User-ID. In the Golf, this is done by various online services and new apps such as DoorBird, which as a smart home technology interconnects the car and the home. Volkswagen makes the Intuitive Usability future real. Volkswagen is focusing on cars that are intuitive to operate with new display and control concepts. In the new Golf, these concepts include the Active Info Display (fully digital instruments), which is being offered for this bestselling car for the first time, and – in a world premiere Fully connected Golf drives semi-autonomously in the compact class – an infotainment system with gesture control. Automated Driving Volkswagen will make cars even safer and more comfortable by automated driving. For instance, the new Golf is available with the assistance systems Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist that enable semi-autonomous driving. Smart Sustainability Volkswagen is advancing the development of innovative high-volume electric car models. The e-Golf (zero emission vehicle), which is also making its debut this spring, will offer significantly increased driving range. Also driving in an all-electric mode, part-time, is the Golf GTE – the plug-in hybrid model of the model series.
The Golf product line democratises progress – and in the case of the GTI it even democratises the passing lane on the German motorway. The Golf is an icon that is accepted and ‘at home’ in all social classes. With each new generation, each update, the Golf also stepped up to meet the challenges of its time. And it has done so once again. “We are making the future real.” That is the claim of the new Volkswagen brand strategy. That is precisely what the new Golf delivers. It connects us. This Golf is the first compact to launch with intuitive gesture control. It is the first to drive semi-autonomously with new systems like Traffic Jam Assist. And it is the only car model to offer all of the Dear guests of the international Golf driving presentation, types of drive systems that are relevant to the present and future. Welcome to Mallorca! Over the next 24 hours, we will be focusing on the Golf. The most successful car in Europe. For us, the new Golf is once again the best ever. Volkswagen builds at least one million of them each year. But what counts is how you see it. And we eagerly What an enormous number! This means that by tomorrow await your feedback! at this time around 2,700 new Golf cars will be built and ordered somewhere in the world. By our calculations, a new Golf has been purchased, built and delivered every Sincerely, 40 seconds, on average, over the past four decades. What are the reasons for such success? First, there is its design. For four decades, Volkswagen has been further Dominik Hoberg developing the Golf design, reinventing it in its details Head of Product Communications and making it more precise. This has made the Golf Volkswagen Brand an original. Often copied, but never equalled. In addition, each Golf impresses with its technical properties.

Theory of evolution The design-DNA of the Golf Theory of evolution Designers Georgio Giugiaro and Herbert Schäfer came up with a design-DNA for eternity in the original Golf. The new Golf also follows this genetic code. 42 Golf update / February 2017 / Volkswagen 43
Theory of evolution Industrial design on a high level is an art. It leaves its mark on epochs and creates icons. The best designs outlast time. The Bauhaus or Wagenfeld lamp (1923) is one such icon. The Lounge Chair (1956) by Charles and Ray Eames is another; it is considered the original benchmark for avant-garde © Vitra furniture design. Simple in its structure, perfect in its execution. Even very simple consumer objects can become icons, such as the legendary Coke generation as the Golf. Vehicles in which an evolution bottle (1915). There were compact Head of Volkswagen Design: “There are hardly any hatchback models before it. But none of comparable cars in the world whose design them had a design-DNA that was progressive has been continually refined from generation to enough to survive over the decades. The Golf was the first to have such DNA – created by Italian designer Giorgio Giugiaro and completed by Herbert Schäfer who was Head of Volkswagen Design at the time. Klaus Bischoff, Volkswagen chief designer Klaus Bischoff: “This DNA is what made a crucial contribution to the trajectory of the Golf. The latest Golf also follows this genetic code. Although it has often been tried, no one has been able to copy its design. Its DNA acts like a form of copy protection.” 44 Golf update / February 2017 / Volkswagen 45

Anyone can drive it.” Anyone who compares the first Golf with the latest Golf will quickly discover that their common DNA is unmistakable. Model-specific are the silhouette, the continuous character line that runs from the front and terminates at the rear, the striking wheel arches – but primarily it is the following two details that make it practically impossible to imitate the Golf: “The most significant features are the front end that emphasises the car’s width and the independent C-pillars,” explains Bischoff, Head of Design. 46 Golf update / February 2017 / Volkswagen 47

In the Golf Mk3, a switch was made to Klaus Bischoff: “We have always reinvented the Golf horizontal headlights, but with a trick that proved based on a unique compact car DNA, making it out its DNA. This kept the Golf a genuine Golf, but since the early 1990s space was also made for headlight technology that has continually become more complex. “Another identifying property that runs like a common thread through the entire evolutionary design development is the C-pillar, which essentially forms the backbone of the car. It gives the Golf its strength, its power, its safety. That is a very essential property of the Golf,” says Klaus Bischoff. The head designer continues: “The C-pillar sits extremely solidly on the rear wheel arch. Very well-balanced. And it is surrounded by the graphic 48 Golf update / February 2017 / Volkswagen 49

The global success of the Golf in figures As you like it. The first Golf of the year 1974 would be the seed of a vehicle family that fulfils an unusually high number of mobility wishes. For example, Volkswagen is the world’s first and only carmaker to offer all currently relevant types of drive systems in a single model – the Golf. There are also a number of different body versions and very customised trim versions. Golf drivers can choose from these drive systems: petrol, diesel, natural gas, electric, plug-in hybrid as well as front or all-wheel drive. In addition, it is the many different body and special versions that make the range of this model unique. Along with two-door and four-door versions, in the current Golf Volkswagen also offers two all-round versions – the Variant and Alltrack – as well as the independent Sportsvan. Golf democratises safety Safety for everyone. Volkswagen democratises progress in the Golf. Safety systems in particular have become the norm for everyone thanks to the affordable Golf. It all began with the basics, such as well-engineered head restraints and a safe chassis. This was followed by crash-optimised bodywork, airbags and ESC. According to analyses by Volkswagen accident researchers, the introduction of Electronic Stability Control has led to saving 1,000 lives annually in Germany alone. Now another safety revolution has taken place: innovative assistance systems. Take the example of City Emergency Braking: it makes city traffic safer. And the Blind Spot Monitor: it relieves anxieties about the blind spot. Systems now being introduced for the first time in the Golf update – such as Traffic Jam Assist and Emergency Assist – further improve safety.
