WELCOME TO GLADSTONE HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Students,

The Staff welcomes you to Gladstone High School. It is a new school year and we will make every
effort to have this year as “normal” as possible. We have planned a full schedule, all activities and
athletics are going, and teachers are ready and excited to have everyone back in the classroom. It
will be an exciting and memorable year. Every day you have fantastic opportunities to explore
possibilities and work towards your future. Make the most out of every moment and every day here
at GHS.

This year we will be resetting the positive school culture and climate from past years and we will
provide a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment. We encourage and support
students to be engaged in the classroom, focusing on the learning and to strive for excellence. We
understand that it is a rest for students too, being back in school five days a week and not sitting on
the couch at home or on your bed in your room. Teachers are going to be taking the best from the
last two year of distance learning and incorporating technology to engage learners daily.

Regular attendance is critical! Students who miss class end up falling behind and then struggle to
meet graduation requirements. The expectation is to be in class, on time, every class, every day.
Our graduation rate is well above the State of Oregon average and we are offering exciting classes
and electives including Digital Photography, The Study of Wellness and Happiness, The Culture and
History of Food, Construction Technology, Graphic Design, Engineering Technology, Music, and
more. We have something for everyone!

We will continue to focus on cultural awareness, mutual respect for all students and staff as human
beings, school and community pride, and of course kindness.

Get Involved! You will make valuable and lifelong connections as you engage in
activities throughout the year. You will make new friends and connect with people through classes,
activities, clubs, athletics, music, drama, and other interests inside the classroom and out. You will
also be out in the extended community doing projects, community service, college and career visits
making important connections in the real world. The best high school memories are created by hav-
ing fun with your classmates when being involved in GHS traditions of Friday Night Football Games,
Cheering and going Wild in the stands, Homecoming Week, Dances, Spirit Week, Adopt A Family,
Give it Back Day, Unity Week, Blood Drives, and Holiday Lunches.

High School is not easy. You will be challenged. When barriers to your education happen, ask for
help. As a Staff we are dedicated to providing you with a quality education and positive high school
experience. Teachers, counselors, administrators, office staff, office aids, and every other adult in
the building is here to support you. Take advantage of the time in your day to finish work while
surrounded by academic support. You just need to show up and ask! We all BELIEVE in you and
you just need to BELIEVE in yourself too!

With everyone’s work, dedication, engagement, connections, and fun, we can make this the best
school year ever!

DISTANCE LEARNING AT GHS
                                                  You are still our student!

Distance learning has many challenges. The main one is that because you, as students, are not physically in the building, some of
you believe that you are not “in” school. There are still academic and behavioral expectations that happen even though you are
physically distant during the school year. Our School culture at GHS has not changed with distant learning. Kindness, caring, and
empathy towards others are even more important attributes to exhibit when we are not in a face to face environment. Everyone is
anxious and stressed by the current pandemic situation and without daily contact you do not know what another person is going
through in their life. You need to take other people's perspectives and feelings into account as you have interactions and communi-
cations with others. BE KIND and the rest will be easy.

Social Media
Words and Pictures matter and can lead to consequences up to and including suspension and expulsion from school. In other sec-
tions in the handbook it also explains expectations about social media. This serves as a reminder that, as a school, we have some
jurisdiction when you are posting things that may disrupt the school environment, even from a distance. This includes videos, pic-
tures, or words posting of guns, direct or veiled threats, repeated bully behaviors, racist, homophobic, misogynistic, or other hate
speech directed at individuals or groups. Quite simply, DO NOT post any version of the “N” word. DO NOT make comments,
threats, or jokes about going after someone, or the school, especially with any weapon reference. DO NOT get in ridiculous back
and forth arguments or comments on social media that degenerates into you picking the wrong word and language. Law enforce-
ment will be notified and information given to them as necessary.

OSAA eligibility (athletics/activities) will be impacted if students do not earn credit or engage in this learning opportunity.
OSAA grade and credit requirements will still be in effect to participate in sports. Gladstone High School has additional, higher ex-
pectations along with a student code of conduct.

Integrity!
Students will be expected to do their own work and to not use inappropriate resources when completing tests and quizzes. We are
expecting students to learn the information and be accountable for their learning. Plagiarism or cheating will result in a zero on the
assignment, test, project, etc. Continued issues will be reported to the Assistant Principal and/or Dean of Students.

Live Video Guidelines for Gladstone Students
In an effort to provide an opportunity for direct instruction, class discussion and/or small group instruction, or extra support through
office hours, teachers will set up live video classes and conferences with students. Attendance will be taken and all live video
events will be recorded to allow student access at a time convenient to them if unable to attend. Live video also provides the op-
portunity for students to engage in community.
Live video conferences are meant to be instructional and helpful for the students participating. The following are important expec-
tations for students to follow when participating in a live video conference:
 Students will be invited by the teacher to join a scheduled meeting.
 Only students invited by the teacher may participate in a class meeting.
 Students must identify themselves by their correct full name and must have the camera on when they are admitted into
the live video conference. When participating, students will be held to the same expectations for classroom behavior as
          outlined in the Student Handbook.
 Students must follow the usual school dress code expectations.
 Students will be in an appropriate setting with an appropriate background.
 Students will use a positive tone and appropriate language.
 Students will stay focused on discussion and not make inappropriate comments.
 Students will be respectful of all participants by taking turns and not talking over others.
 Students will be aware that the conference is being recorded.
 Students who are disruptive in any manner will be removed from the conference and will lose the opportunity to partici-
pate in any live video conference.
 If in breakout sessions, students will continue to follow expectations.
Teachers will set up additional expectations and norms for video lessons and office hours. Examples may include:
 Use the chat function! Make use of the knowledge in the room.
 Mute your microphone in the main room so everyone can hear.
 Keep your camera on whenever possible.
 If you are having difficulty with your Wi-Fi, shut your video off to reduce your bandwidth.
 Stay logged on during breaks. Logging out means you have to be readmitted.
Because this is a new experience for all, other guidelines and expectations may be added and included throughout the year. Stu-
dents will be notified of changes as they occur.

ADMISSION TO GHS
All students living in the district who have not completed 12 years of education should regularly attend a public full-time school and
be included in the available educational programs.
All new students must register in the school office. Students enrolled in the district shall comply with Oregon laws related to age,
residence, health, attendance and immunization.
Registration requirements include proof of residency, student’s birth date (a birth certificate, a hospital record or a baptismal rec-
ord) and immunization records as required by law. Students who do not meet age and date criteria required will not be granted
early admission. Students admitted to any grade must show evidence of completing the prior school years.
Students located in the district shall not be excluded from admission solely because the student does not have a fixed place of resi-
dence or solely because the student is not under the supervision of a parent. (GSD policy JEC & JECA)
Students residing outside of the school district boundaries will need to contact the Gladstone School District Administration office for
assistance with nonresident processes. (GSD policy JECB)
ALCOHOL/DRUGS
Gladstone High School promotes a drug and alcohol-free environment. Students will not sell, possess, use or be under the influence
of any alcohol or illegal substance and/or possess paraphernalia while on school property or at school-related activities at any time.
Students who are off campus during the school day who use, possess or distribute alcohol or drugs may be subject to disciplinary
action. Violators will receive a minimum 5-day suspension from school with possible recommendation for expulsion and will be
required to obtain an alcohol/drug evaluation including UAs. Students who violate the alcohol/drug policy and have been suspended
from school will lose all school privileges for 30 days. Students violating this policy while on a school sponsored trip will also
not be allowed to go on future school trips. Law enforcement will also be notified. Distribution of alcohol/drugs on school
property or within 1,000 feet of the school property and repeated offenses will result in suspension pending an expulsion hearing.
Athletic/Activity participants will also be subject to penalties as outlined in the Athletic/Activity Code of Conduct.
ANIMALS IN SCHOOL
Only service animals, as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, serving persons with a disability and animals approved by
the superintendent that are part of an approved district curriculum or co-curricular activity are allowed in district facilities.
Animals, except those service animals serving persons with a disability, may not be transported on a school bus without prior per-
mission, board policy ING and ING-AR.
ASBESTOS
The district has complied with the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) by having buildings inspected by accredited
inspectors and the development of a management plan for the control of this substance.
ASSEMBLIES
Assemblies are planned for the good of all students. It is a time to have fun, experience something new, and to be with your fellow
classmates. Students are required to attend all school assemblies. Students will be expected to be on their best behavior.
Students who do not behave appropriately during an assembly will be subject to disciplinary action. Students do not have permis-
sion to leave school during an assembly. Hats are not to be worn during assemblies. Cell phones, backpacks, food, and drinks are
not allowed in assemblies.
BACKPACKS/BOOK BAGS/LARGE TOTES
Backpacks, book bags and/or large totes that cannot fit under the student’s desk in the classroom must be stored in the student’s
locker. Due to safety issues and crowded classrooms, backpacks cannot block aisle ways or be a deterrent to safely moving around
the classroom. Backpacks are never to be stored in the hallways or in any entrance area such as outside the gyms. Backpacks are
not allowed in assemblies. Students are not to have backpacks bigger than what can be stored in the lockers provided. Wheeled
luggage type backpacks are not allowed.
BUILDING HOURS
During the school year, GHS is open from 7:30 AM -4:00 PM. Students reporting to school prior to 1st period or staying after
school must be in the cafeteria or working with a teacher. On Wednesday early release times, students are to be in the cafeteria.
Students should never be in unsupervised areas.
BUILDING SECURITY
Building security is a priority and we all have a role in keeping GHS a safe place. Students are to enter through the main entrance
only. All other doors to GHS are locked and are not considered entrances for student access. Students are not to open locked
doors for students or adults to enter. At no time are doors to be propped open. Any suspicious activity, threats of harm or weap-
ons on campus must be reported to an administrator immediately.

                                                                 (7)
