AGENDA Schedule: 4:15 – 5:15 PM ü Part 1: Brief Overview on OLSAT-8 ü Part 2: School Site GATE/Test Coordinator Responsibilities § Before, during, and after testing § New procedures ü Part 3: Q & A 4
WHAT IS THE OTIS-LENNON SCHOOL ABILITY TEST EIGHTH EDITION (OLSAT-8)? ✓ OLSAT-8 is a nationally standardized and norm referenced achievement test ✓ Qualifies students as gifted in the High Achievement Ability Category ✓ Measures a student’s ability to learn and succeed in school. ✓ Paper/Pencil Test ✓ In-Person Test ✓ Version: Level C 6
OLSAT-8 & HIGHLY GIFTED Q. Can a student be identified as highly gifted using the OLSAT-8? A. No. Only an intellectual assessment can deem a student to be highly gifted. 7
WHY DO WE ADMINISTER THE OLSAT-8? ü Analysis of 2009 pilot data indicates that this assessment supports the District’s goal established with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) to address the disproportionate number of underrepresented student populations and identify students who may be overlooked in the referral process. ü OLSAT-8 is a universal screening tool for gifted/talented identification. ü No parent consent form is required. All students will participate unless they meet the exemption criteria. 8
WHICH STUDENTS ARE EXEMPT? Students who are exempt include: ü Students who take the CAA (California Alternate Assessments) or are on an alternative curriculum. ü Students whose parents request non-participation. § Students previously identified as gifted in the Intellectual Ability Category may be assessed with the OLSAT-8 but some parents may choose to opt out as a result. ü Students who have previously taken the OLSAT or have been pre-exposed. 9
WHAT IS THE COSTS & MATERIALS? Q. Will the schools have to purchase the tests? A. No. Q. What materials, if any, does a school provide? A. It is the school’s responsibility to provide #2 pencils. Q. Is there a cost to Affiliated Charters? A. There is NO cost to affiliated charters. Also, no Fee- For-Service for processing (OLSAT-8 identification only) 10
OLSAT-8 BREAKDOWN ü Entire test is timed ü 3 parts to the test ü 2 sittings ü 60 questions in all ü 82 minutes (approximate) total administration time ü Students bubble their answers directly in the test booklets. ü Test booklets do not have any written questions; all language-free. ü Test questions are read to students by test examiner only once from the Directions for Administering (DFA). 11
SAMPLE QUESTION NON VERBAL: PICTURE REASONING Picture Classification ¡ Ability to determine which picture in a set of five pictures does not belong. (unifying concept) Sample item is confidential and proprietary 12
ACCOMMODATION & MODIFICATIONS Due to assessment norms, the following accommodations will invalidate OLSAT-8 test results. Thus, these scores will not be considered for eligibility for gifted identification: ü Any modifications made to the content of the assessment ü Directions read more than once ü Allowing extended time 13

If the student does not meet the “answers attempted” rule at any one point (number of answers required for each section), the score report will result in a valid DNA. Students cannot be retested with the OLSAT. § To prevent testing irregularities, it is the responsibility of the school to monitor or proctor during test administration and carefully check all test booklets for completion before collecting the test booklets from students. Please ensure that all test examiners are properly trained BEFORE the testing day. 43

STUDENT/HOME REPORT 2021-2022 :
OLSAT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA 2021-2022 Identification Criteria in the High Achievement Ability Category: OLSAT-8 Test Component Qualifying Score Criteria (Age Percentile Rank-APR) Total Age-Based Score 95 or above Nonverbal Age-Based Score 95 or above Verbal Age-Based Score 95 or above Total Age-Based Score Meal Code 1, 2, or 5 90-94 or CEP Schools
AUTOMATIC GIFTED IDENTIFICATION: FALL 2021 Q. What do we send to the Gifted/Talented Programs Office if the student is eligible? A. NOTHING! No referral necessary! § Eligible students will be automatically identified in MiSiS in the High Achievement Category • NOTE: Uploads occur two weeks prior to identification § MiSiS uploads and identification for 3 rd and 4 th graders is estimated to occur in January (2022). • MiSiS uploads and identification for 2 nd graders is estimated to occur between June and July (2022). § Do NOT create a referral in MiSiS for automatic uploads. This will impede the automatic upload. § Eligible students must be placed in the school’s GATE program. 63
ELIGIBILITY LETTERS (FALL/SPRING SEMESTERS) High Achievement Identification Based on OLSAT-8 Results ü OLSAT Eligibility letters to parents will not be sent from the Gifted/Talented Programs Office. ü It is the responsibility of the school to notify parents of the students’ eligibility status for the High Achievement Ability category automatically uploaded into MiSiS. School personnel with an approved user role, e.g., GATE coordinator, can log into MiSiS, click on GATE under Reports and select GATE Notification Letter from the drop down menu. ü GATE Office will inform GATE coordinators/principals once identification has taken place. Please wait until you receive this notification to disseminate eligibility letters. § Ineligible students do not receive these notifications. 64
AUTOMATIC GIFTED IDENTIFICATION Important Update: 2020-2021 Identification ü Current 4 th grade students who took the OLSAT in March 2020 (as 2 nd graders) or May 2021 (as 3 rd graders) have OLSAT scores in MiSiS. ü However, they have not all been identified in MiSiS. ü Identification will take place after November 2, 2021. Wait until you receive notification from the GATE Office to disseminate eligibility letters to parents. 65
AUTOMATIC GIFTED IDENTIFICATION Important Update: 2021-2022 Poverty Indicator There may be students with a poverty indicator/flag who qualify but may not identified as gifted by MiSiS this school year. Gifted/Talented Programs staff will monitor for eligible students who did not get identified after each MiSiS upload date (we have 3 this year for OLSAT) and identify students manually. ü First round of manual entries will be completed by December 2021. ü Please contact gate@lausd.net after December 1, 2021 if you have students that were missed. ü Place students in GATE program in the meantime. 66
REQUIRED: INTELLECTUAL REFERRALS üAs of 2017-2018 district policy, students who receive an OLSAT-8 score of 99 on the Total, Verbal, or Nonverbal Age Percentile Rank (APR) must be referred by the school-site GATE coordinator in the Intellectual Ability Category. Pre- screening (other than OLSAT results) will not be required. üFor the above Intellectual Ability referrals, the Fee-for- Service (FFS) is waived for Affiliated Charter Schools. 67
NEXT STEPS Gifted identification is not the final goal of this process! ü Identification is the tool that allows teachers to make instructional and programming decisions to best meet the academic and social-emotional needs of students. ü The identification process has little value without appropriate clustering and differentiated instruction to follow. 68
