6th June 2019 VOLUME 35 ISSUE 8 GETTING A HEAD-START Having a set pathway at the end of Year 12 is one of the attractions of a School Based Apprenticeship. While some of us are still tucked up in bed in the mornings, certain students from Faith Lutheran College’s School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBATs) program are already in a workshop, out in the vineyard or at a Community Childcare Centre getting a head-start on their future careers. Students are flourishing under the support and guidance of VET Coordinator Dianne Sanders, who undertakes thorough counselling sessions and fills out forms with Jacob Jaeschke – School Based Agricultural Mechanical students prior to their commencement, to ensure Technology Apprentice with Vater Machinery the right students are placed with their most suitable employer. Crucial planning and ongoing support takes place to ensure students keep their school, work and training commitments in balance, and scheduled site visits identify potential areas of support throughout the program. The students are in their chosen workplace at least 1 day per week and additional theory classes take the place of 1 or more school subjects and attracts SACE credits. After successfully completing SACE, students convert to a full- time apprenticeship. Upon meeting some of these students it’s impressive to learn that many of them work full time in the holidays in addition to their school study commitments, already displaying critical skills including respect, communication and teamwork, dedication and diligence to undertake Mitchell Noack - School Based Engineering Apprentice the responsibilities of holding a job. with Fabcoat Faith Lutheran College - Faith Middle & Senior Campus 130 Magnolia Road, Tanunda, SA 5352 Phone 08 8561 4200 faith.sa.edu.au

SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS JACK TILLEY, YEAR 12 School Based Electrical Apprentice (SBAT) at Torrens Valley Electrical, Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Technician) at TAFESA Describe your average week Monday, Tuesday and Friday I wake up a lot earlier and go to work at Torrens Valley Electrical. The other days I go to school and study Essential Maths and Research Project. On school days I sometimes stay later after school and get help from my teachers to catch up on my school work. It’s actually hard to sit still in a class room after running around flat out working for two days, non-stop. I get really hungry at school as the day is so structured. Why did you take on a School Based Apprenticeship? I had the opportunity for a School Based Apprenticeship and I took it. I got to start my apprenticeship early so I will finish earlier than most people. I’m 17 and already in my second year. I like earning money and gaining experience. How are you supported at Faith Lutheran College? BATTERY RECYCLE BIN Faith supports me in lots of ways. Teachers are really good to me and are always asking me how I’m going and are always there to help me out of school hours. I also have meetings with my VET Coordinator every fortnight to make sure I’m on track with my school work, training and work. What do you find challenging? Trying to concentrate when I come to school is really hard. It’s also a big thing to try and find time for homework. The weeks that I am at trade school, I am too tired to do school work after a day of trade school. Would you recommend an SBAT to other students? If other students had the opportunity to do an SBAT they should take it. It’s great to get a qualification at a young age to have that under your belt for the future. It’s good to have a break from school each week. I’m Student Services has recently received a battery glad I stayed at school this year to be part of Year 12 recycling bin, as part of Battery World, School’s and participate in athletics, swimming and football and Recycling Program. SCIENCE VS RELIGION… A topic of robust discussion… can the two co-exist? If so, how? At Chapel last week Chaplain Adam Yeager explained why Science and Religion are designed to work together, and what this has to do with music. We started with a random topic called out from our Chapel audience, and three teachers on the stage; a Scientist (Mr Gambell), an English teacher (Ms Newbold) and an Artist (Mrs O’Dea). Each teacher had their own blank canvas in front of them, a laptop, a pen and paper and paint. Each teacher worked on the same topic – music. Adam shared how Science and Religion work together while our teachers spent 10 minutes exploring the topic of music. WE LOOKED AT SCIENCE… THINGS THAT CAN BE MEASURED Photosynthesis, Gravity, Energy expenditure, Solar flares, Ocean depths, Neurotransmitters, Heat rates, CO2 Production, Heat exchange, Population growth, Exothermic reactions, Species growth and change, DNA replication rates. WE LOOKED AT RELIGION… THE IMMEASURABLE Beauty, Love, Joy, Hope, Faith, Transcendence, Meaning of life, Life after death, Why the universe exists, Purpose, Wonder, The soul, Miracles. Our teachers constructed diagrams, wrote poems and brushed with painted colour. Although the topic was the same, the outcomes were very different. We heard a beautiful poem, a lifetime of music influence. We heard a Scientific report, detailed diagrams and description on how music works. We enjoyed a painting, a colourful depiction of music and joy. Science without religion is lame, AND WE REFLECTED religion without science is blind. One topic, different interpretations. Different perceptions. Albert Einstein No one was right, no one was wrong. We bring our ideas, our gifts, our talents and we each hold a view. Our world is filled both with beauty and photosynthesis. We can have faith and solar flares. It is not a matter of Science or Religion. It can be both. It is both. We can celebrate both. Just because you can’t measure something, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Science is one way of understanding God’s creation, Religion is another. TESTING THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY AT WAITE CAMPUS Craig Moore, Teacher On Wednesday 29th May the Year 12 Agriculture students attended Waite Campus as a part of their course looking into the latest technology being used in plant breeding. Students extracted DNA and then learned how to copy it and also how to isolate genes through a range of hands-on practical activities. They toured through the $40 Million Plant Accelerator facility which uses a range of imaging, robotics, and automated processes in the development of new crop varieties. Year 12 students in the lab Blake Dahlitz experimenting MATHEMATICS On 21 May 8 students attended the Senior students Gifted and Talented Study Conference at Concordia College. The aim of the day was to help students to improve their thinking skills, begin to be able to identify what is fundamental from what is trivial, become intellectually creative, identify assumptions and distinguish between good and poor arguments and, think systematically and rigorously about relevant modern-day issues Pictured are Ben Osbourne, Joseph Brown, Margot Pick, Oscar Seppelt, Nicki Grosser, Tomas Heuzenroeder, Lucy Blenkiron, Josh Newman, Mr M Knowles, Mrs A Cameron (practicum teacher), Dr Christopher O’Neill (University of Oxford), Julie Arliss (Kings College, Taunton), Jeffrey Hodges (Sportsmind) Faith Lutheran College - Faith Middle & Senior Campus THE VINEYARD, Issue 8 - 6 June 2019 Page 8
CELEBRATING YEAR 8 AGRICULTURE LEARNING CONTINUES TO THE KITCHEN TABLE Amidst wheelbarrows, rakes, watering cans and garden stakes, our Year 8 Agriculture students have been working diligently in their own garden plot. During their Vegetable Production learning unit, students chose from a variety of winter vegetables to plant and nurture. During a recent harvest, students could be heard excitedly comparing the sizes of broccoli heads and discussing potential recipes for their fresh produce to cook at home. Winter vegetables in the garden included broccoli, turnips, coriander, carrots, peas and radishes. William Lindner watering his veggie patch Macey Hodgson with her brocolli Amelia Leditschke & Dusty Schulz Lilly Mathews picking her winter greens FAITH FARM – FEEDING AND CARING FOR OUR ANIMALS The rolling hills and vineyards surrounding the College provide a constant reminder that we are in the heart of farming country. At recess times our College farm is a hive of activity as Agriculture students rotate their responsibilities to feed and care for our growing animals. The chickens are fed and watered by Year 9 students and our Year 8 Mitchell Mosey Year 8 students prepare the morning meal for the two visiting dairy calves. In the background, the steers make their presence known, waiting for Cattle Club and the attention they receive from students learning to handle and guide them. The wethers are checked and fed again at lunchtime, while students watch in delight as the goats play impulsively in their pens. The distant sound of the recess bell reminds students to head back to class, farm life for the animals continues as they grow and learn alongside the students. The Faith Farm truly is a special place. Ebony Noack Year 8 Faith Lutheran College - Faith Middle & Senior Campus THE VINEYARD, Issue 8 - 6 June 2019 Page 9

FUTURE PATHWAYS Viticulture Work Experience – Read Year 10 Experiences! Trish Cirillo, Pathways Coordinator Nicki Robins from Barossa Grape and Wine Association – BGWA together with many local vineyards and wineries collaborated together to provide the opportunity for all regional students to participate in a fabulous week of work experience for students to explore the many career opportunities in the Wine and Viticulture industry. Year 10 students Oscar Jenke, Caleb Schwartz and Karlson Jaensch chose to participate in this week of work experience to explore what opportunities might be available in their future endeavours. Please read their experiences and learn of the varied activities they participated in. CALEB SCHWARTZ I applied for the Viticulture work experience week because I have enjoyed learning about the topic in agriculture classes at school and wanted to expand my knowledge of the industry and all of the different aspects of it. I also went to determine if a job in the viticulture industry is something that I would want to pursue or not, and felt the week would be an excellent way of determining that. In terms of hands on activities, during the week we took part in activities including conducting soil tests on things like pH, Salinity, Soil type (e.g. clay, loam, sand, etc.). We participated in pruning and were taught spur and rod and spur pruning methods. In other activities, we looked at technology including automatic planters, drones, tractors, spraying units, pre-pruners, and phone apps and we met farmers, contractors and vineyard managers. I enjoyed the week and enjoyed meeting people with important roles in the viticulture industry and hearing them speak about their area of expertise. The week was well organised by Nicki and I learnt a lot about what makes up the viticulture industry. I enjoyed the whole week but my favourite activities would probably be the pruning, I enjoyed the hands on nature of that topic and found it an enjoyable one. I also enjoyed visiting the Yalumba Nursery and looking at their facilities for grafting and growing grape vines. I do not really know what my future pathway is going to involve but through the week, I now know how I would be able to establish a career in the viticulture industry. If I did go into viticulture I now have a more specific view on what area I would want to follow. Faith Lutheran College - Faith Middle & Senior Campus THE VINEYARD, Issue 8 - 6 June 2019 Page 11
FUTURE PATHWAYS - VITICULTURE WORK EXPERIENCE KARLSON JAENSCH I applied for the Viticulture work experience week because I was interested in viticulture and wanted to learn more. We were able to prune, graft and do soil testing and watch a lot of different machines and people in action. It was good to see what jobs were out there in the viticulture industry and I liked doing the grafting and liaising with the instructor talking about where he worked and how to use the tools effectively. This was a good opportunity to learn more about the industry and the opportunity has opened more doors for me to continue to explore. OSCAR JENKE I applied for the Viticulture work experience week to see what my future could be like and to see what other people do and bring that knowledge back to my family farm. I participated in pruning and I asked many questions throughout the week to learn as much as I could. I definitely enjoyed the week and I learnt a lot. I hope the program continues, as it is very beneficial. My favourite activities of this week were doing rod and spur, spur, pruning, listening to the vineyard couples speak about how they got to here and their homemade modifications, listening to all the people speak about what they do in the Barossa and having tours around their facilities. I believe this experience has opened more doors into my future and I am confident on what industry I am going into. Thank you to Nicki Robins for arranging and working tirelessly to offer this wonderful opportunity to all regional students. The students found it engaging and very informative. Mr Mitchell, Mrs Sanders and I visited the students during the week and we were impressed with student interactions with industry and the programmed activities. OPEN BOYS FOOTBALL ROUND 1 2019 Coaches, Mr Schmidt and Mr Clarke On Tuesday 28th June the Open Boys Football team played Nuriootpa High School in the Round 1 of the Pool A Secondary Schools Knockout Football competition. Wearing the new Faith colours for the first time, the team was led onto the field by Captain Benson Heintze and Vice-Captain Todd Falkenberg. The wet and windy conditions proved challenging for both teams, however our players adapted a little quicker with defenders Ben Cornish and Jed Habermann working hard to keep the ball moving forward and create scoring opportunities up forward. The heavy ball led to some inaccurate kicking though, with the quarter time score sitting at Faith 1.4 to Nuriootpa HS 0.2. In the second and third quarters the team began to get the upper hand, with Todd Falkenberg having a great game in the ruck and giving the midfielders, led by Jacob Fiebiger and Max Roocke, first use of the ball. Shay Linke also took some excellent overhead marks in the slippery conditions, helping to move the three quarter time score to Faith 5.8 to Nuriootpa 2.4. The final quarter saw Nuriootpa lift their intensity and add three quick goals that reduced the lead back to a narrow 4 points. However, the team responded, with some excellent defensive efforts by Jack Hannah, Ned Grieve and Benson Heintze preventing any further scores. With a few minutes left to play Tyson Healy laid a strong tackle to win a free kick 50m from goal. He then delivered the ball to a leading Brady Griffiths, who went back and kicked the match sealing goal. A fantastic team effort in difficult conditions. The team now moves on the play Cabra in Round 2 at some point in the next 2 weeks.
