Remarkable graduate 05 Criminology and Criminal Justice Young Alumnus of the Year Finalist in 2016, Tygh Field is currently serving as Director of Why choose Griffith? Operations, Probation and Parole for Queensland Corrective Services where he provides leadership and direction to the Queensland’s Probation and Parole Service. Tygh oversees the implementation of strategic and government policy, providing operational and strategic support to Senior Management and ensuring effective relationships with stakeholders to work towards enhanced outcomes for people subject to parole and community based orders. After graduating in 2004, Tygh joined Corrective Services as a case management officer where he piloted a new model of probation and parole prior to its full roll-out in July 2007. He supervised a case load of high risk offenders, undertook court advisory functions and facilitated offender rehabilitative programs and was promoted to a supervisory role after only two years. Tygh’s service was recognised in 2010 when he was awarded an Australia Day Achievement Medallion for his contribution to corrections and public safety. Most recently, Tygh has been working with other Government agencies on the implementation of the new Queensland Drug and Alcohol Court, a new Work and Development Order scheme and rolling out an Electronic Monitoring system for Parolees. Making a difference 07 Criminology graduate Tailor Holst works as a Custodial Officer at the Brisbane Women’s Industry connections Correctional Centre. She says she loves her job. ‘I work with prisoners on their rehabilitation by helping facilitate and refer them to programs they may need, be it anger management, drug-related, domestic violence, counselling or others,’ Tailor says. Tailor drew on one of her tutor’s networks to arrange volunteer work at Numinbah Correctional Centre doing programs and activities with the prisoners while she was still studying. ‘That’s what inspired me to get into the job I’m in now.’ Tailor says that completing her criminology and criminal justice degree has been a vital asset in her work. ‘Griffith helped me with understanding discourses and behaviour of prisoners.’ She says that criminology helps her understand the prisoners and how best to communicate with them. ‘You learn a lot about mental illness, situational awareness and understanding legislation.’ Tailor hopes to progress her career within Corrective Services. Tim will spend six months with Plymouth University in England’s south-west, as part of a Forensic Science/Criminology and Criminal Justice double degree. ‘When I left school I eventually realised there were opportunities to combine my passion for the work undertaken by the Queensland Police Service with a long-held love of science. Broadening horizons 11 Megan Farmer’s study abroad experience to the University of Leeds in the UK led her to re-evaluate her Global opportunities career goals ‘I’ve moved away from corporate law firms to thinking about how to tackle the real issues I have faced during my engagement with the global community, such as the treatment of refugees and immigrants and the serious emerging threat of terrorism.’ It also provided her with the opportunity to expand her knowledge in different fields of study. ‘I had a few free choice electives as part of my double degree so I was able to branch out and try new subjects that I wouldn’t have tried at home’. It also enabled her to travel the world in a way she never imagined. ‘Visiting fifteen different countries in six months both with friends and solo really helped me grow as a person. A highlight was my trip to Iceland where I saw the Northern Lights which was a huge tick off the bucket list and the country itself was just amazing!’ She came back a changed person. Her advice to those considering a study exchange? If you’re worried about how to afford it, she suggests looking into all the grants, scholarships and overseas HELP loans that are available to help ease that pressure. Since graduating from Griffith University Tom has worked in several areas of the criminal justice system where he uses the skills gained during his criminology degree to help the community. Tom says that several of his courses directly assist him in dealing with his daily activities. ‘I’ve worked in Probation and Parole which was the stepping stone for gaining insight into understanding criminal behaviour and how these behaviours affect the general community. I later transferred to the immigration sector working in security. After a short stint as a general officer I was promoted to Manager of Security of the facility. Moving on from security I was afforded the opportunity to work as a Child Safety Officer’. Exceeding expectations Thomas Spalding began his Criminology and Information Technology double degree in 2017. ‘Originally I chose criminology because I had an interest in the field but while studying I thought I might brush up on 17 IT because cybercrime has a lot of potential for jobs.’ Thomas also says that the double Double degrees degree has exceeded his expectations from both an academic and a social perspective.
