Editor’s letter Lasting rewards “A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.” — Mary Lou Retton There’s no denying the benefits of youth sports, both for students’ mental and physical health. And, when you add travel into the equation, that just enhances the experience. I liked the above quote from Mary Lou Retton, a retired gymnast, because it speaks to the true value of traveling as a group, regardless of a game’s outcome. Memories made on youth sports trips last a lifetime. This month’s cover story highlights major sports cities and what they offer for student groups before or after their games. These cities feature behind-the-scenes tours at famed baseball stadiums, sports museums that honor the greats and recreational activities that keep students active. Page 12. On page 62, contributor Michael McLaughlin reflects on a trip he and his students took to Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. McLaughlin is head of the middle school at Austin Preparatory School in Reading, Massachusetts, where he oversees the student body’s international travel opportunities. In The Lounge (page 10), we sat down with Danielle Savarese, the director of sales for Beyond Times Square, a destination management company that offers student programs in New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Boston. She shares her insight on tailor-made student programs with authentic local experiences. Beyond Times Square also provided some helpful tips for leading students on the subway in major cities. Check out Study Guide on page 11. As always, thank you for reading this issue of Student Group Tour magazine. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday season! Game on Major cities score with educational sports tours By Cortney Erndt To say students love sports is an understatement. Many value after-school sports as much as their classes — or even more. Playing sports boosts students’ mental and physical health; empowers life skills like confidence; and teaches discipline, leadership and teamwork. Watching sports allows young people to identify with something greater than themselves. Afterall, the success of a team positively reflects on its fans; the fans in New York, Chicago and Atlanta know just that. Stadiums in major cities offer behind-the-scenes tours and educa- tional programs that make each group eager to work and play harder. GREAT LAKES The Historic Artcraft Theatre enchants students Students experience history first- hand at The Historic Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, Indiana. History talks, movies and tours for school groups can be arranged at the 1922 art deco movie house. “Our goal is twofold,” said Jaime Shilts, programming and events coordi- nator. “First, we want to expose children to the Artcraft experience, which is the same as what their parents and grand- parents would have experienced. And two, to offer an affordable, fun field trip for all ages.” The 15-minute history talk presents an overview of the 625-seat theater’s past. “We’ll talk about the early beginnings of the theater,” Shilts said. “We talk about what a silent movie is and what vaudeville was and about the orchestra pit and how it was used. We also tell them about our 35 mm projectors and how they differ from what other theaters use. We always talk about the restora- tion of the theater and why saving it The Historic Artcraft Theatre is important. And we like to mention our volunteers and what volunteering means.
