Skills boost Skills boost 2 How do I get the tenses right? 3 How do I write a clear and natural sounding translation? Translating verbs using the appropriate tense can be a challenge. To help you, look out for: You need to be aware that you can’t translate literally from one language to another – you must find English equivalents for French idiomatic expressions. • time phrases which give clues to the tense used • the form of the verbs and the verb endings.
