                                          A Brief Report

The University Grants Commission (UGC) released grants-in-aid to the college for college
development, merged schemes and for purchasing Teaching and Learning Aids during 11th five year
plan to the college. A brief report of implementation of the UGC fund is as follows:

B. [Physical Achievement]:

B.1 Utilization of Fund for College Development: The amount of Rs. 14, 50,000/- was released for
college development purpose by the UGC. The said amount was spent on various schemes like books
& journals, equipment, maintenance of equipment, improvement of facilities in existing premises,
enhancement of initiative for competence building, examination reform, field work.

 Books & Journals: The College has 16 departments. All the departments have now sufficient number
 of books. In all together there are near about 25000 nos. of books in the library. The students are
 now getting the benefit of text as well as reference books from the library.

 Equipment: Previously the departments of Physics and Chemistry were suffering from shortage of
 equipments for laboratory purpose. Both the departments have used the fund for purchasing
 equipments on a priority basis.

 Improvement of facilities in existing Premises: Student bench, class room chairs, tables reading table
 in the library, notice board, Class room boards for newly constructed Bio-Science departments were
 purchased from this fund. Various development activities like as better drainage facility, Drinking
 water facilities, flag stand, gardening etc in the college premises were developed under the scheme.

 Enhancement of initiative for competence building: Books were purchased for enhancing the
 competence building of the students.

 Examination Reform: One Desktop Computer, one Mini Laptop, one almira, four numbers of charge
 lights were purchased for smooth functioning of the Examination as well as Admission Committee
 of the college. Student’s performance is evaluated on the basis of periodic tests as well as on how
 they are able to tackle the assignments. So the college examination cell organizes unit test
 examination every year and a part of the fund was also utilized for purchasing examination papers
 for the students.

 Field Work: In University syllabus there is a paper on environmental science for the third year
 students of the college and in this paper field work is mandatory for all the third year students. So
 every year the teachers of Bio-Science Departments take the responsibility to organize the field work
 of the students and for that they have to visit many sites. After completion of the field work the
 individual student have to submit the report to the authorized teacher. So the grant is utilized for
 transportation, conveyance, boarding & lodging of students and accompanying teachers.

B.2 Utilization of Fund for Merged Scheme: The amount of Rs. 71, 03,000/- was released for
 utilizing the UGC fund in connection with Merged Scheme. The said amount was spent on various
 schemes     like   Improvement     of   facilities   in   existing   premises,   Colleges    located    in
 Rural/Remote/Border/Hill/Tribal Areas, Colleges with relatively higher proportion of SC/ST/OBC,
 Special grant for enhancement of Initiative for capacity building in Colleges, Day Care Center,
 Colleges in backward area, UGC Network Resource Center, Equal Opportunity Center in Colleges,
 Remedial Coaching for SC/ST/OBC, Coaching Classes for Entry in Service, Higher Education for
 Person with Specific needs, Career Counseling.

  Improvement of facilities in existing Premises: Under this scheme the sanctioned amount was spent
   for women toilet both for female teachers and female students.

 Colleges located in Rural/Remote/Border/Hill/Tribal Areas: Our College is near to Bangladesh border
 and located in remote area. Students are mostly tribal and come to college from very remote area.
 Transportation facility is also poor and costly. It takes lots of time to reach into the college for the
 students. Since most of the students have very low socio-economic profile so it becomes difficult as
 well as costly to attend the college daily. Besides, due to transportation problem the students do not
 come to the college in due time. So to provide better education accessibility and transportation facility
 the college authority had arranged bus service facility at free of cost for the students so that they come
 to the college before starting the Honors classes. The college spends the bus fare from UGC fund
 under this scheme.
 In this scheme there is fund for accommodation of both teachers and students on rental basis. The
 students, who stay near the college on rental basis, are provided house rent also from UGC fund.
 Although, the facility was given to the students only for one year i.e during the year 2011-12. A part
 of the sanctioned amount was spent on renovating the teachers as well as Group-D Staff Quarters.

  Developing and Implementing Location Specific Curricula: Under this scheme the college has
   organized various extension activities based on specific needs of different localities within
   jurisdiction.

(i) Health awareness and medical camp was organized at Chebri village of Khowai district by hiring
the Doctors/Government Medical Officers from Tripura Medical College & Hospital, Hapania,
Tripura on 17th November, 2010. The doctors talked on different common diseases and aware people
to cure and ways to prevent them. One of the doctors gave a lecture on different orthopedic diseases
and suggested some preventive measures of this disease and side by side they have done medical
check-up to the local people at free of cost. College students were actively participated in that drive.
They talked with the local people and made them aware of different health related issues as well as
other social issues.

(ii) Another health awareness and medical camp was organized at Baganbazar village of Khowai
district by hiring the same team on 30th November, 2010. The doctors talked on health awareness,
patient counseling and side by side they have done medical check-up to the local people.

(iii) One day workshop on agriculture development was held at Hatkata village, Khowai on 29th
January, 2011. In that workshop three experts from Agriculture Department, Government of Tripura
and Dibyoday Krishi Bigyan Kendra, Khowai had given their valuable lecturers on the topics of
agricultural development, technique of production and marketing of agricultural products. In that
programme more than one hundred farmers were participated and they were provided minimum TA
and refreshment.

(iv) One day awareness camp on Thelasemia Disease was held in the college campus on 14th
November, 2011. Students conducted a cultural program and made people aware regarding this disease
through that program.

(v) The college arranged One day awareness programme on Cancer disease in the college campus on
16th November, 2011. Doctor from Tripura Cancer Hospital had given his valuable lecture on the topic
of reason and preventive measures of cancer disease.

(vi)The NSS volunteers of the college conducted one day blood donation camp at college premises on
17th November, 2011. Many students and teachers donated blood in this programme.

(VII) Banbajar village of Khowai district is adjacent to the Bangladesh border. Medical facility is not
so good enough in this place. So college authority had decided to organize a medical camp on 7 th
February, 2012. The programme was very successful and the villagers got the real benefit of this
medical treatment facility.

(VIII) Awareness camp on pisciculture was held at Dibyoday Krishi Bigyan Kendra, Khowai on 8th
February, 2012. Various resource persons from Fishery Department and Dibyoday Krishi Bigyan
Kendra presented their valuable lectures on pisciculture. The teachers of Bio-Science Department
along with the students of respective departments participated the programme.

(IX) Two Awareness camps on commercial cultivation of summer vegetables and flower were held at
Dibyoday Krishi Bigyan Kendra, Khowai on 9th and 14th February, 2012 respectively. Various
resource persons from Agriculture Department, Horticulture Department and Dibyoday Krishi Bigyan
Kendra delivered their valuable lectures on this topic. The teachers of Bio-Science Department along
with the students of respective departments participated the programme.

(X) The last medical camp was held at Marehaduk village of Khowai district. The area was tribal
dominated area. Medical facility is not so good enough in this place. So college authority had decided
to organize the camp on 3rd March, 2012. The programme was very successful and the villagers got the
real benefit of this medical treatment facility.

 Colleges with relatively higher proportion of SC/ST/OBC: The College is dominated by the tribal
 students and they are coming from economically deprived and BPL card holder families. As a result
 the students are facing financial constraints. Accordingly separate lists were prepared for SC, ST,
 OBC (non-creamy layer), Minority community students, physically challenged and financially
 disadvantaged (General category) and the selected students are provided stipend through UGC fund.

 Special grant for enhancement of Initiative for capacity building in Colleges: Under this scheme
 fund was released for books and equipments. The Higher Education, Government of Tripura started

new courses (Physiology, Botany and Zoology) in our college in the academic year 2010-11. So the
 UGC grant was utilized for purchasing books and equipment, furniture for new laboratory and
 classroom furniture.

 Day Care Center: To help women and working parents (college employees) to pursue their career
 without having to worry about their children during working hours one room was constructed for
 day care center and various toys for the children were also purchased.

 Colleges in backward area: To enrich the quality of higher education, grants were utilized for
 purchasing books under this scheme. Besides, most of the departments are given the accessibility of
 a computer. For smooth functioning of administrative work of the college, one computer was
 installed for Office Superintend, one in Academic section, one in Cash section and another for
 dealing assistant of UGC cell. Four numbers of printers were purchased by the sanctioned amount.

 UGC Network Resource Center: All the departments are installed with internet facility through LAN
 connection. The Principal room and her PA room are equipped with this internet facility.

 Equal Opportunity Center in College: One day Workshop cum Awareness Programme on equal
opportunity was held at the college premises on 22nd September, 2011. In that programme different
resource persons like Sr. Executive Officer, ST Welfare, Government of Tripura; OSD, ST Cell/
Commission, Khowai, Tripura and OSD, SC Cell/ Commission, Khowai, Tripura delivered their
presentation on different topics like present status of ST/SC in Tripura, different Government(Central/
State) Schemes, different Acts and Laws etc.

Three days National Seminar on “Equal Opportunity in the context of Social and Human
Development” was organized by the college. In this seminar different resource persons/ Professors
from Assam University, Tripura University, State Women Commission, Government of Tripura were
present. Near about fifty participants (Scholars/ Academicians, other Government Service Holders)
from the state as well as outside the states were presented papers on this theme.

There is a Coordinator of this cell to review the implementation of various schemes and programmes
for the welfare of the disadvantaged and marginalized groups of the society and other related activities
undertaken by the college for SC, ST, PH, OBC (non-creamy layer) and others.

 Remedial Coaching for SC/ST/OBC: The College conducts special classes outside the regular
 timetable and also during holiday period. Students belonging to Other Backward Communities and
 General Candidates are also allowed to get the benefit of such coaching classes. There is a
 Coordinator along with one part-time LDC of this cell for effective implementation, monitoring and
 supervision of the classes. Separate attendance registers are maintained for different subjects. To
 maintain the official work on the said purpose one separate room is occupied where one computer,
 one chair and table for LDC, contingency etc. were purchased. Books were purchased for the benefit
 of the students.

 Coaching classes for entry in service & Carrier Counseling Cell: In order to prepare students
 belonging to SC / ST/ OBC (non-creamy layer) and Minority communities and also general
 community to get gainful employment in Central as well as state services, the college continued the
 scheme of Coaching classes for entry in services. The coaching under the scheme were oriented for
 particular examinations conducted for selection to services, such as the IAS, State Public Services,
 Bank recruitment, Railway, SSC and other Central Government Services etc.
 There is a Coordinator along with one part-time LDC of this cell for effective implementation,
 monitoring and supervision of the classes. Separate attendance registers are maintained. Books,
 magazine, News papers were purchased for the benefit of the students. To maintain the official work
 on the said purpose one separate room is occupied where one mini Laptop, book racks, contingency
 etc. were purchased from Entry in Service Scheme. One Photo Copier Machine was purchased from
 the fund under career counseling cell.

One day seminar on career counseling programme was held in the college premises on 6th September,
2012. Resource persons like Former Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) Member;
Employment Officer, Dept. of Employment Services & Manpower Planning, Govt. of Tripura; Chief
Manager, State Bank of India, Agartala, Tripura had actively participated and delivered their lectures
on different topics like carrier counseling, psychology counseling, methodology of preparation for
competitive examination etc.

One career counseling programme was organized by the college faculty members at Khowai
Government Girl’s Higher Secondary School on 19th December, 2012. The faculty members explained
about future prospects of higher education in general subjects as well as in technical subjects to the
outgoing (Class XII) students of that school.

Higher education for person with specific needs: The UGC had sanctioned assistance to the college for
Higher Education for Persons with Special Needs (Differently-abled Persons) (HEPSN) during the 11th
Plan Period keeping in view the need to provide infrastructure to differently-abled persons/ students.
Under this scheme ramps were constructed in the college for their smooth mobility. An awareness
programme & Medical camp for differently abled persons of Khowai sub-division was held in the
college premises on 1st April, 2011. Resource persons from Ferendo Rehabilitation Center; NGO from
Agartala, Tripura were hired for doing the programme. They had done medical check-up to the
differently abled persons at free of cost and also given advice to them. Two students of our college got
the treatment facilities through providing special aids at free of cost. Some of the College Office Staffs
checked their eyes by them and all of them are provided spectaculars on the basis of eye test. One
office staff had got hearing aids after treatment. All the aids were purchased through UGC fund.

B.3.Utilization of Fund for purchasing Teaching and Learning Aids:

The amount of Rs. 14, 31,000/- was released for purchasing teaching and learning aids purpose by the
UGC. Equipments were purchased for strengthening the laboratory of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology,
Botany and Zoology departments. Different audio visual aids like PA system for three Lecture Hall,
LCD Projector with ceiling mount facility for three Lecture Hall were purchased. Teaching aids were
purchased for Zoology Department, Botany Department and Physiology Department. One ID Card
Printer was installed in the college for providing ID card to the newly admitted students in the college.
One College Management Software was installed for institutional needs. It includes admission
software, library software, stock inventory software.
