Introduction The mission of the base is: • To promote French, German, Dutch and other international polar research projects on Svalbard o Atmosphere o Glaciology o Kongsfjorden system o Terrestrial ecosystems • To be a platform for short, medium, and long-term projects supported by logistics, facilities, and on-site personnel
What we do Infrastructures & Services - Support up to 24 guests simultaneously - Provide offices, seminar rooms, high speed internet, etc. Laboratories - Dry and wet labs, optical labs, workshops - Atmospheric observatory - Clean air and no light pollution observatory at Corbel station - Underwater observatory at the old pier
What we do Field & maintenance support, technical operation - Boats, snow scooters, bicycles, … - Necessary field & safety equipment - Maintenance & routine operation of continuous measurements

Ny-Ålesund is a radio silent area Why? • Radio telescopes at the Airport & Brandal, operated by the Norwegian Mapping Authority, measure signals from distant quasars • GFZ satellite receiving antennas and a few more local emissions increase radio noise Therefore ban of all radio emitters between 2 – 32 GHz Note: worldwide harmonized 2.4 GHz band used for: • WIFI, GSM, BlueTooth, …falls within the protected frequency band • No mobil phones, drone, WLAN, BlueTooth, radio clock etc. • Turn off or use flight mode

AWI projects: projects using KB Marine Lab, Teisten, chemicals, and freight create a BANF number and send it to the station leader and logistics department (Silke Henkel) before your arrival at the base.

Project registration & booking of participants Kings Bay Terms & Conditions • Cancellation or changes to bookings: need to be done > 22 days prior to arrival even with the unstable covid-19 situation otherwise charges are applied! • Bookings made through RiS must be cancelled through RiS. Logistic Needs Form Please send the logistic needs form (awipev.eu/download-center/) at least 6 weeks before your arrival, better 2 months to the station leader and logistics secretary at AWI and IPEV

Other • Bring your own tools for your project o Tools at the station are for maintenance of observatory, cars, boats and ongoing station operation o Borrowed in individual cases possible, but bring your own tools if you need them extensively • Working in workshop is possible but room is limited o Inform into logistic needs form

Freight When I have too much luggage? • Try to send as much as possible with the AWI & IPEV container • Extra freight need to be announced and agreed upon by AWI/IPEV • Flight to / from Ny-Ålesund: if your luggage > 20 kg (75 NOK per kg overweight extra) inform booking@kingsbay.no before NO guarantee that extra luggage will be on your flight!
