This memorial honors the passengers and
crew aboard the United Airlines flight who
stopped hijackers from reaching their target
on September 11, 2001. After learning of the
attacks on the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon, the passengers and crew fought
back, and the hijackers decided to crash the
plane before reaching their planned destina-
tion.
Directly after the event in 2001, a temporary
memorial was built on the crash site. In
2005, the design from the team led by Paul
and Milena Murdoch was chosen for the
permanent memorial.
