There’s a definite gap between what employers in the sector are looking for and the

currently possess.
This gap has also been deepened by the immense growth of our sector as a result
of increased government funding, such as the recently confirmed package of £150million
each year for physical education and sport in primary schools until 2020. Such growth, coupled
with the £5.1bn secured through TV rights for the Premier League from 2016 - 2019, of which
£56m a year will go into grassroots football, community projects and good causes - plus
the ever-increasing need for children and young adults to become more active - has created
a skills shortage.
Finding quality candidates is a continuous challenge not only for SCL, but also for our sector partners. It is this
challenge that has led to the development of this ground-breaking, sector-relevant foundation degree and the
creation of the next generation of sports coaches.
