First News 18 March 2021 A message from Sarah Billiald, Chief Executive This week I was delighted to receive my second Covid vaccine – despite the national news regarding vaccine supply we do not anticipate this impacting on colleagues ability to receive their second vaccine (or first vaccine for new joiners!). Our partners, Alliance for Better Care have now vaccinated over 100,000 patients across east Surrey and Mid-Sussex. As part of this milestone, they are calling on partners and patients to join in as they fundraise for the Unicef Covid Vaccine Fund for overseas vaccination programmes. I am sure many of you like me will be very grateful to have been vaccinated and if you would like to help others in less fortunate positions to be vaccinated please do considering making a donation via their JustGiving page – every pound counts! Next week (Thursday 23 March) we will mark the one year anniversary of the first national lockdown, this day is being recognised by reflecting on the events of the past year. Please do take the time to reflect either by joining the national campaigns (minutes silence at 12 noon or by shining a light at 8pm) or in your own personal way. Take care Sarah
Covid day of remembrance and reflection As we approach the first anniversary of the first national lockdown, there will be a national day of remembrance and reflection on 23 March to remember those loved ones who have been lost during a difficult year, and to recognise the huge contribution and commitment from staff, partners and other stakeholders during the past 12 months. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is backing charity Marie Curie's plan for Tuesday 23 March, when those who have died in the pandemic will be remembered. https://www.mariecurie.org.uk/get- involved/day-of-reflection Minutes silence at 12 noon At 12 noon there will be a minutes silence in remembrance of lives lost during the pandemic. Join Marie Curie for this moment of reflection, as guests share their thoughts, words and songs. Together, they'll honour loved ones who have died and reflect on the challenges we have overcome. During this session they'll pause to observe the national minute of silence at 12 noon. Register for the live online event here. If you'd rather not join the online event, you can observe the minute of silence in a way of your choosing. All staff are encouraged to take part.
Shine a light at 8pm Stand outside with a light – a candle, a torch, even your phone - to remember someone who's died and show your support to people going through a bereavement. Alternatively you can shine a light in your window for everyone to see. Share what you do on social media using #DayOfReflection. Join our month long challenge starting on 23 March and make positive changes You could win a cream team hamper or a healthy hamper full of veggies! There are many things we can all do to look after our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing and it’s important that we find positive actions to build into our weekly routines. Get started on 23 March and take part in our month long challenge with the chance to win a cream team hamper or a healthy hamper full of delicious vegetables. Complete the diary attached, entering something for each day that you have done to improve you physical, mental or emotional wellbeing. You may find some useful ideas to get you started here. On Monday 19 April, please email your completed diary to fchc.comms@nhs.net. Everyone who completes the diary will be entered into a draw and selected at random. The winner will be announced on Thursday 22 April. Good luck!

Update on the current national health and wellbeing offers Download the letter issued from NHS England and NHS Improvement outlining some of the changes to the national health and wellbeing offer as of 1 April 2021. Since March 2020, NHS England and NHS Improvement have been providing all NHS colleagues access to a range of health and wellbeing support resources, including free access to a number of mental health apps and peer support through a series of virtual common rooms. Many of these national support offers are in place until 31 March 2021, and as such, they wanted to write to you to confirm what will happen from 1 April 2021. Pay progression and pay review meetings In 2018 when the new NHS contract refresh was implemented and the 3 year deal was agreed, we advised that we would communicate out any changes that would be happening. As of 1 April 2021 in line with Agenda for Change (AfC) terms and conditions all staff will come under the new arrangements and the new pay progression framework. What this means is that from 1 April all staff who are on a pay affecting point are required to have a pay review meeting with their line manager and meet certain criteria. Usual arrangements require staff to demonstrate or show that they meet the requirements for the role and pay progression. However, in recognition of the pandemic and limitations on capacity, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) have confirmed that for the duration of the pandemic, the requirement for pay review meetings has been paused. With so many changes having happened over the last year including implementing a new learning management system and ESR self-service, and in light of the above, First Community will be pausing all pay progression meetings for 2021/2022. By pausing the pay review meetings for the next 12 months we can ensure that we work on a robust programme including: • Developing a pay progression policy in line with national guidance
• Creating a communication plan so staff and managers are aware of their roles and responsibilities • Training for managers on how to use the system • Training on how to hold a meaningful pay review meeting. This will also support staff who may be feeling anxious about what this would mean for them if they have either been shielding or working in a different role over the last year. Should you have any queries or wish to discuss this further please contact a member of the HR Team. Full details can be found in Annex 23, England of the NHS terms and conditions of service handbook (NHS TCS). https://www.nhsemployers.org/tchandbook/annex-21-to-25/annex-23-pay- progression-england The NHS Staff Council document can be found here Alliance for Better Care (ABC) Unicef Covid Vaccine Fund Our partners, Alliance for Better Care have now vaccinated over 100,000 patients across east Surrey and Mid-Sussex. As part of this milestone, they are calling on partners and patients to join in as they fundraise for the Unicef Covid Vaccine Fund. Unicef urgently need funds to expand the scale and scope of their work supporting children affected by coronavirus, especially in countries with weaker health systems. They want to ensure that people are supported around the world who don’t have sufficient funds to vaccinate their population or have the infrastructure to arrange a programme like we can in Surrey and Sussex. We know that if we were to pay for the two doses of vaccine ourselves, it would cost between £5- £20 per person. If you would like to donate the equivalent cost of your vaccine, you can do that through their Just Giving webpage. • £60 transports 4,205 doses of vaccines
• £45 provides cold chain equipment to safely store 500 doses of vaccine • £30 gives a full kit to protect a health worker, including boots, gloves, masks and coveralls • £20 buys 781 pairs of gloves for health workers • £10 buys 56 bars of soap to help prevent the spread of the disease • £5 provides 1,350 water purification tablets to purify water in emergency situations. The impact of a large-scale outbreak of coronavirus has been immense. Children are at risk from the disease, but also from the disruption to health and education services, impacts on caregivers, and separation from family members. Unicef has been working closely with governments and the World Health Organization (WHO) since the start of the coronavirus outbreak. Donations made will help to limit the spread of the virus and reduce the impact on children and families. First Community laptop care First Community is in the process of refreshing its laptops, replacing old machines with new, high specification ones. As a not for profit organisation, we need to get the maximum use out of our substantial investment in new technology. There are a few things we can all do to ensure our laptops have as long a life as possible including: • Don’t leave anything on the laptop keyboard. If you leave something like a pen on the keyboard and then close the lid, it’s likely that the screen will break • Make sure you don’t put anything heavy on the laptop. They’re designed to be robust in normal use, but are not built to have heavy things put on them • Avoid using them resting on a pillow, soft furnishing, duvets, etc. Using them in this way can cause them to overheat which can reduce their lifespan • Avoid picking the laptop up by the screen, as this puts strain on the connections which make the screen work. • Don’t leave it in your car on a hot day. It can get so hot inside a car in the sunshine that
the laptop can be damaged. Also, leaving it in a visible place represents a security risk • With lots of us working from home, we all need to take reasonable care to ensure that equipment doesn’t get damaged by others in the home, get damaged in transit or get eaten by the dog! Peer-led SUN groups launched to support adults with complex emotional needs People experiencing difficulties with complex emotions that affect how they feel, cope with life and manage relationships can now easily access support in the community with the launch of SUN (Service User Network). SUN Groups are for people with complex emotional needs that are often associated with personality disorder or aspects of this condition. It is estimated that, at any given time, about one in twenty people will have a personality disorder.
SUN is based on an established model of care that offers adults weekly peer support groups where they can share experiences and provide each other with help and advice. The service is provided by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with third sector provider, Community Connections Surrey. SUN groups are facilitated by a clinician and peer support worker. They can be attended by anyone aged 18 and over who is registered with a GP in Surrey or NE Hampshire (Rushmoor and Hart Boroughs). A person can refer themselves to SUN by emailing: sun.admin@sabp.nhs.uk.and asking for a SUN membership form. They do not need a diagnosis of personality disorder to join SUN groups. There are several SUN Groups each week, all of which are currently offered virtually due to Coronavirus restrictions. More information at: www.sabp.nhs.uk/sun Facebook posts to help parents with the return to school After being off school for so long, it is only natural that many young people will be worried about returning to school.

Donation of new scrubs for our paediatric therapy teams Last week, staff from the paediatric therapy teams (pictured above) were delighted to receive a donation of scrubs in all sorts of kid friendly fabrics from the local ‘Scrubs for frontline workers’ community. The team have been wearing the new scrubs and can report the children have given them big thumbs up!
East Surrey Hospital Trust HQ car park closure East Surrey Hospital is undertaking essential work to improve the electrical infrastructure of the site. As a result, the car park behind Trust HQ will be closed for up to 18 weeks from Monday 15 March. The electrical vehicle charging bays will still be accessible. Whyteleafe surgery relocating temporarily Whyteleafe surgery (part of the Warlingham Green and Chaldon Road surgeries) will have to empty the premises from Monday 12 April while work is undertaken. They estimate this to be 6-8 months. Staff will be relocated to the Chaldon Road and Warlingham Green surgeries and will be aiming to offer exactly the same service during the period of works. The surgery will continue to support Caterham Dene in exactly the same way as the current service provision and with the same group of doctors. Fiona Burke, Sophie Deeks , Elana Shelley, Josh Shelley, Shellie Dormand-Bean and Rosane Bustarde (from Sarah Billiald, Chief Executive) "A massive shout out to you all for stepping up at the last minute to help deliver vaccinations at the Epsom mass vaccination centre on Mother’s Day. "Thank you for going above and beyond to support the delivery of Covid-19 vaccinations." Christine Bryant (from Sue Ashfield) “I just wanted to say how supportive Christine has been over the last 4 months. “I have been unable to come into Forum as I’ve had a knee injury and couldn’t drive. “We were due to have our UNICEF BFI assessment in January and Christine sourced some boards for our displays. She organised some printing of audit forms and other important information and some photocopying and then posting it to me home. “I just want her to be acknowledged for this as she could not have been more helpful.” Thought for the week
