History The impressive late gothic Victorian home from 1878, incorporates an earlier Georgian house from the early 1700’s as well as what is purported to be a 13th Century turret in the basement. It was rescued from dereliction in late 2012 when it was bought and restored by the current owners. In the 18th Century the Georgian house was owned by the Warburton’s who also owned Straffan House (now the K Club) and sat on extensive grounds. An icehouse at the side of the house still remains but is now underground. During this period Firmount was leased to the Deasy’s, whose daughter went on to find the Loreto nuns in Canada. In the mid-19th Century, it was then acquired by the Henry family who completed a large restoration in 1878 where a Victorian extension was added, and the Georgian house was modified and wrapped in a matching cement render. Today the Victorian wing of the house has wildly impressive 4.2m high ceilings which retain their original intricate plasterwork while the Georgian side of the house features a superb cast iron balustraded cantilevered staircase. In addition, the fireplaces are original and made from a mix of marble and cast iron, most likely dating from the late 19th century. The house continued its colourful history by becoming a WWI military hospital for recovering officers in 1917 followed by a safe house for De Valera. In the late 1920’s the house became a sanatorium, and the adjacent “Doctor’s House” was built within the Georgian stableyard. In 1964 the house was purchased by the Department of Defence and used as the Control Centre for Nuclear Tracking. The basement was bunkerised and was supposed to be used by senior government officials in the event of nuclear war.
