PRESENTING EWRR 2019 WELCOME ADDRESS FROM MEETING ORGANISER Dear Friends, Bienvenue à Lyon, and welcome to the 39th European Workshop on Rheumatology Research (EWRR). The meeting will start at 1.30 pm, but you are welcome to attend the study groups in the morning. As a result of my first message, you did a good job! We got more than 170 posters with a young investigator as first author. All abstracts including those with oral presentation will be presented as poster. The poster tour will take place Thursday after the last presentations and before the networking event. Many poster tour leaders are ready, so everyone will have the opportunity to present. This will be your chance to get a prize at the end of the meeting! Out of the abstracts, some were selected for oral presentations. Here again the rule is that the first author on the abstract will indeed present. Please make sure you stay on time. To have more short oral presentations, the number of keynote presentations at the beginning of the sessions has been reduced. It was indeed a great satisfaction that all the invited speakers have immediately said “yes, I come”. Planning the future is a key concern for most of the young still in training, although this remains true later. As an experiment, during the Friday lunch break will take place a “meet the experts” session, an open discussion with experts for different fields including basic and clinical research in academia and industry, also publishing. Many experts have agreed to run small groups to clarify all your questions. So, take some time on selecting the key points you want to be clarified. In addition to developing personal interactions for science and research, Lyon is also a great place for happy life. We have selected typical examples of the cuisine of Lyon. The top event will be the official dinner at the Hotel de Ville, city hall of Lyon, a building impressive from the outside and even more the inside, specifically combined with another exposure to fine cuisine. Bon séjour, bon congrès, With my best regards, Professor Pierre Miossec Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology Immunogenomics and inflammation research unit University of Lyon miossec@univ-lyon1.fr 4

Located at the confluent of the Rhône and the Saône, Lyon is proud of its 2000 years of history. Once Lugdunum, capital of the Gauls, now Lyon, an international metropolis, France’s second city proposes an original trip back in time and through cultures. UNESCO has recognised the exceptional nature of Lyon by listing its historical site as a World Heritage. Gastronomy, culture, nature, sport... Lyon and the Rhône region offer visitors a warm welcome, surprising and delighting them with their rich resources, festive atmosphere and carefully preserved quality of life. SIGHT SEEING Visitors can take a unique journey through time and across cultures, by strolling down its narrow streets, crossing its “traboules“ (narrow secret passages), walking along its bustling docks, passing through its impressive squares, and seeing over 200 sites illuminated at night. Outstanding museums, a dynamic cultural life, busy clubbing and drinking scenes, a thriving university and fantastic shopping lend the city a distinctly sophisticated air, while adventurous gourmets can indulge in their wildest gastronomic fantasies. Don’t leave the city without sampling some Lyonnais specialties in a “bouchon” – the quintessential Lyon experience. EATING-OUT The happiest of all visitors are the ones who journey here to sample the famous cuisine. France’s most renowned chef, Paul Bocuse hails from Lyon. His celebrated three-star Michelin restaurant is a top destination for gourmands. The legendary Lyonnais gastronomy can also be enjoyed all over Lyon at “bouchons” evocative little brasseries. 6
