Kimathi Mafafo, Akudzwe Elsie Chiwa, Haneem Christian, Anico Mostert, Emma Blencowe, Yonela Makoba and Gemma Shepherd Feminist critics often reflect a rigid and monolithic patriarchal perspective which frequently depicts feminism as a movement that stems from a group of ‘angry women’ and ‘ungrateful women’. This reflects the patriarchal resistance of gender equity within a social, political and economic structure. The persistent othering and policing of femme bodies, reinforces patriarchal privileges which oppose engaging feminist and womanist discourses. This exhibition highlights why feminism and womanism is pertinent in the contemporary. Feminist utopia challenges social indoctrinations, by confronting theoretical assumptions of the femme and gender non-conforming bodies role, the social contract and the undeniable narrative of a nuclear family romance assigned at birth. With this exhibition, the artists mediate on the rigid social structures and speculate on a shared future from a more nuanced perspective.
AKUDZWE ELSIE CHIWA (1991 - ) Akudzwe Elsie Chiwa was born on the 13th August 1991, in a small asbestos mining town near Masvingo called Zvishavane formally known as Shabane, in Zimbabwe. Chiwa is a visual artist and Michaelis School of Fine Art Graduate. Chiwas work, experiments with the notions of Identity, Femininity, Migratory Practises as well as mysticism and storytelling within the Shona culture. Her method explores generational and embodied knowledges by way of an intuitive art-making process. This process allows her to utilize both conscious and sub-conscious capacities, to build an evocative sculptural practice which to aims re-build by re-imagining forgotten and erased histories of her past and culture. Among her accolades which include the Simon Gerson Award, the Cecil Skotnes Scholarship, and the McIver Award, she became the first woman of colour to receive the Michaelis Prize, awarded for her 2018 graduate body of work ‘Continuum’. GEMMA SHEPHERD (1993 - ) Gemma Shepherd, born 10th September 1993 is a Cape Town based artist who uses photography as a medium to explore issues of self, belonging and becoming, as she finds herself in an isolated limbo in all aspects of life thus far. Despite being born into the newly democratic ‘rainbow nation’, Shepherd grew up treading the line between two worlds - occupying a position of privilege but understanding the experience and realities of marginalized communities. Being in this state of ‘in-between’ pushed Shepherd into an internal grappling with her own identity, place in society and life, which she navigates through multiple creative outlets. After graduating from the University of Cape Town, she entered the fashion industry which ultimately led her into the world of photography. While Shepherd phases in and out of various fields, she is consciously exploring multiple creative expressions as well as ensuring she is never confined to one. Her work has been published in numerous international and local publications both in print and online, such as Vogue Italia, Bubblegum Club, iMute, Just Magazine and The Lake. ANICO MOSTERT (1995 - ) Anico Mostert is a multi-disciplinary artist and printmaker from Cape Town. She graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town in 2017, where she majored in printmaking. Anico Mostert currently lives and works from her home studio in Cape Town. Mostert’s work speaks to the quiet moments of the everyday. Her approach to making is versatile, seeing her producing across ceramics, textile design, animation and painting. She allows her practice to be intuitive and exist as a process of learning and discovery, creating the space for vivid colours and coltish figures to find their place in paintings and prints. Anico uses reference images from social media to imagine still lifes of ordinary scenes, observing the elements of the medium for the artwork to determine itself. Each piece’s name occurs as Mostert imagines what it would say if it could speak. The works upend familiarity, reminiscent of home spaces, yet offering a surreal swing of imagery, where rooms are unpeopled and yet full of life and pictures of people are empty of objects. Her works exude a calm quietness, illustrating unexpected details and unassuming scenarios that verge on the mundane but are illuminated through her attention and careful colour choices. Mostert’s work depicts still lifes, interactions and scenes that feel familiar and comforting but are also somewhat inverted and distorted to feel fresh and unexpected. KIMATHI MAFAFO (1984-) Kimathi Mafafo is a multidisciplinary artist whose practise ranges from embroidery and oil painting to installation. Born in the semi-arid Kimberley in the Northern Cape of South Africa, Mafafo’s verdant imaginings, characterized by lush greenery and sensuous drapery, are far removed from the dusty mining town where she grew up. Mafafo’s father G. Rocky Mafafo, a respected water-colourist, encouraged his children to take art classes at the local William Humphreys Museum in Kimberly. She affectionately recalls wandering around the collections of 16th and 17th-century Dutch still-life paintings, entranced by the vitality of their colours and their exquisite level of detail. Inspired by the technicality of these works and under the watchful eye of her father, Mafafo became a technically exacting artist. She went on to obtain a National Diploma in Fine Arts from the College of Cape Town in 2007 and a National Diploma in Film and Video from Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2016. While her compositions may burst with riotous plant life each leaf and frond remain meticulously executed. Her compositions are seductive in their level of detail yet remain curiously flat, emphasizing their highly staged nature and the narrative element, which is central to her work. Her imagery is partly guided by her desire to celebrate the black female form, inspiring women to embrace their own worth and beauty. Her earliest works are partly autobiographical and tell the story of a woman withdrawing from the urban lifestyle and finding strength in nature and within herself. Mafafo works alongside Mustapha Saadu - a tailor from Ghana - with whom she has collaborated on a series of embroideries telling stories of women trapped under the weight of tradition and not fully realizing their worth. Embroidery is an ancient transcendent, and Kimathi as an emerging female artist, has found solace in the art form, transforming herself and her artwork. Recently, the artist has organized a group of Capetonian woman into an informal traditional embroidery society. The group embroider art pieces derived from her inspiration and artwork. In her own words, “the embroidery process is therapeutic, offering a platform to tackle gender issues and share advice as single parents.” As a group, it is their dream to attract more women to empower young females. Inspired by stories of women around her, Mafafo likens the woman in her narratives to flowers slowly blossoming against all odds, subtly criticising traditional gender roles while at the same time encouraging women to realize their own strength. EMMA BLENCOWE (1995-) Emma Blencowe is an artist living in between Reading in the United Kingdom and Cape Town, South Africa. Blencowe’s work focuses on the body, particularly the fat womxn’s body. She endeavors to bring focus to these bodies and celebrate them through her use of bright colours and her reference of ritual and ceremony, which can both uplift and oppress. Blencowes work focuses on these contradictions, and the contradictions that exist when you inhabit a body that is viewed as abject and othered by the society it survives in. Blencowe graduated from Michaelis School of Fine Art at the end of 2019. She majored in painting, but also studied photography during her degree. Post-Michaelis she began experimenting with digital painting techniques and how to combine these with her traditional food colouring paintings. Currently, Blencowe works mostly with food colouring on paper in various sizes. Food colouring represents the idea of sustenance, which nourishes us and builds our bodies, as well as referencing the fact that food colouring is derived from petroleum and is artificial, unnatural and potentially toxic to us. Blencowe’s work is a statement about the treatment of ‘other’/different bodies and how we should move to a more accepting world that celebrates all bodies, including those of fat womxn. In an utopian world, Blencowe would want to see a world which holds us accountable for our actions, allows us to grow, and is accepting and respectful of all bodies, celebrating their differences instead of dividing us. YONELA MAKOBA (1993-) Yonela Makob a is a multi disciplinary artist who was born and raised in the Eastern Cape. Makoba creates work that speaks to her lived experiences and works with sculpture, photography and performance art, while bringing attention to t he intersectional nature of her existence Makoba’s explor ation of the body as a site of experience, investigates the ‘ of her existence, focusing particularly on the black femme and queer body in South Africa. In her work, she uses the body to physically slow down time by exploring through a healing trance, the unknotting of memory and trauma held in the body. Makoba’s body was a site of scrutiny, picked apart to be compared to her sisters. This comparison leading to seeds of self loathing and dissatisfaction with her particular configuration of body parts and features. The ongoing theme of the violence inflicted on the body is something Makoba was faced with since early childhood. She draws from the often unspoken sexual experiences of a developing body and mind. From Makoba’s first sexual encounter, the unuttered blurred lines of non consensual sex and the exploration of self pleasur e, thereby e xpanding her experience of the body. T he works are an offering, an honest revealing of self, for forgiveness of self above all. In 2016, Makoba graduated with Bsc in Environmental Science from the University of Cape Town, and since graduating pursued her artistic career. In 2017 Makoba participated in two Michealis Galleries’ curatorial graduate shows as a contributing artist and collaborator.
