Holbrook January 3rd 1947 – March 17th 2014 Vickie Emero Holbrook born in 1947 in Bath, ME to Donald and Mary Emero of Bath. Raised with siblings Stephen, Nan, Adele, Curtis and Thomas Emero . Beginning at the age of Eight when she started riding at Shirley App Stable where she cleaned stalls to be able to ride, from then she knew horses where going to be a passion of hers. Every milestone or tragedy that may have happened she has always found comfort and peace with her horses. The pony she leased as a young girl working at the farm in trade was named ‘Sparky’, Her mother purchased Sparky as a Christmas gift when she was 13. Unfortunately Mary passed in a car accident before she had the chance to give him as a gift that Christmas. When the years came she out grew her pony Sparky, She gave him to her good friend Cohne Goodwin. During that time a friend that was moving away gave her the opportunityto own her first horse “Pal” a Saddlebred Belgian cross . In the summers before she was in her college years she worked at Camp Vega for girls in Readfield as a stable girl for two summers. Along with going to college in the fall at Northeastern Business College she stayed with her grandparents in Cumberland on their operating dairy farm that was only a couple miles from the Cumberland Race track. When she was not attending classes for Accounting, she would ride her gelding Pal to the Cumberland Race track and this is where she developed her interest in Harness Racing. She was hired to clean stalls and jog horses as often as she could, so on her days of work she would ride Pal to the track from the farm and tie him in a stall that was free so she could learn the ropes of Harness Racing. After College and working at the track for a couple summers until she graduated with a degree in Accounting. She found a home for her beloved Pal in Woolwich and until she was able to purchase land of her own and built a barn . She met her first husband Harvey Munsey In the late 60’s while she was building on her newly purchased land in Woolwich. In their marriage they had two son’s Donald Munsey and Darren Munsey. The Marriage was not working out for the best and a divorce was filed. With a home and child to support she began work at BIW. While taking care of her home and family, she was having work done on the property during then she met Lester Richard (Dick) Holbrook Jr., They were married in the winter of 1976. In 1977 their son Evan Holbrook was born. The late 70’s early 80’s she built her farm Holly Acres Farm based around the Hackney pony breed and working with various other gaited breeds like Saddlebreds and Morgans, however she never excluded any breed. While working with her farm she also
became a member and held a position in many associations. New England Pony Owners and Breeders Assoc, New England Hackney Assoc , Maine Horse Assoc , Maine Saddlebred Assoc. , Downeast Horse Congress, New England Horse Council and many more. Vickie did many of her years of competing while being apart of these organizations, accomplishing many titles with her hackney stallion Chocolate Beau. The talent and abilty she had with her horse is just one of her many wonderful traits, not only could she get just about any horse to do just about anything. The kindness and size of her heart will never be measured. Over the years she opened her home to many kids from different life styles and provided them with what they may have needed. Giving riding lessons, taking kids to horse shows, being an after school hangout and even just an ear to listen. Vickie did not have a lot to offer but she offered what she could and that was her heart. In the late 80’s Vickie got news she was pregnant, This was obviously not planned however she was over joyed none the less. The thought was all along she was going to have a boy, to her surprised she finally had a girl. Nov 1987 Hiliary Holbrook was born. In more recent years the love of horses has continued, interest of breeds started to switch from the gaited to more of the stock horses like Quarter Horses and Paints. However her activity with horses never slowed her daughter Hiliary took an interest in horses also. Switching Vickie’s role from horse owner and exhibitor to a “Horse Show Mom”, seen all over the state of Maine and New England. In 2003 she moved to Whitefield , Maine with her daughter. While living here she held a job at the Pittston Town Office and also later was a Cleaner of a local bank in the evenings. All while taking care of the 20 acre horse farm , North Meadow Farm. North Meadow Farm was not only her dream but also a home for Cattle, Chickens, Rabbits, Goats and even a Peacock , among many other types of various other animals. Vickie E. Holbrook not was but is a woman with a passion for many things. An Artist with amazing talent, there are many drawings and paintings to prove her natural ability. Painting was not the only thing, sewing, knitting, building, crafting and more, are just a few of the things she could tackle with grace and touch of beauty just like herself. She will not be a simple phone call away , however she will hear every one of us and be giving us advice just the same as if she was here. She will be missed, but never forgotten.
