Welcome to Budapest for the 2020 UEFA Super Cup The start of a new European club football season is always an exciting prospect – especially as it brings with it the annual UEFA Super Cup match between the respective winners of last season’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. This year’s encounter takes place at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. Named in honour of the former Hungary and Real Madrid great Ferenc Puskás, the Puskás Aréna opened in November 2019. The stadium stands on the site of the old Nép- stadion (People’s Stadium), which had been home to Hungary’s national team since 1953. The venue is one of the 12 stadiums which will be used at next summer’s UEFA EURO 2020, staging three group-stage games and a round-of-16 match. It is also an entirely fitting setting for this UEFA Super Cup match featuring two teams of the highest calibre in Bayern Munich and Sevilla. UEFA Super Cup matches are being played at a different venue around Europe each year – meaning that more national associations have the chance to host the event, while local fans relish the opportunity to attend a major international football occasion. The two clubs meeting in Budapest – a wonderful city steeped in football – cap- tured their trophies in August in unique UEFA Champions League and UEFA Eu- ropa League tournaments which were organised after the disruption to football caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Both teams are eager to kick off the new season by adding the prestigious UEFA Super Cup to their list of honours – and I join the fans in looking forward to the action! Aleksander Čeferin, UEFA President
Welcome message from HFF President I warmly welcome you to Budapest, the venue of this year’s UEFA European Su- per Cup Final! I consider it a significant success that European football’s governing body has chosen the Puskás Arena to be the venue for the match between Champions League winners FC Bayern Munich and Europa League victors Sevilla FC, if only because Hungary has never before hosted the final of a major European compe- tition which will be decided over just a single match. The role of host is a source of pride for us, but at the same time, in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic, a great deal of responsibility comes with hosting such a prestigious match. Matches in European competition have been delayed for months and then were recently held in closed stadia without spectators. Perhaps UEFA’s decision was also due to the fact that in the spring, everything went well for Hungarian football as the sport resumed its activities. Our task now is to ensure that football life continues smoothly in the coming period, something which requires the efforts of all those involved. With the construction of the Puskás Arena and its inauguration last year, we have taken a big step towards putting our capital city back on the international foot- ball map and to playing a central role in Central and Eastern European football. Holding the Super Cup Final will also be a kind of test for us, because this fixture will be followed by several prestigious football events in the Arena in the future, foremostly, the four matches in next year’s men’s European Championship and the 2023 Europa League Final. Once the coronavirus pandemic is over, I am sure that football fans from abroad will visit us for a longer time and take all the opportunities they’ve not been able to enjoy at this current time. Dr Sándor Csányi, MLSZ President
