MOVSC February Update Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Flooding may result from rain, snow, coastal storms, storm surges and overflows of dams and other water systems. Flash flooding can occur suddenly and without warning. Flash floods exhibit a rapid rise of water over low-lying areas. Flood waters can be extremely dangerous. Just six inches of moving water can knock an adult down. One foot of moving water can sweep away small vehicles, two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles, including SUV’s and pickup trucks. There were 147 flood related deaths in the United States in 2021. Out of the 147 deaths, 75 occurred in vehicles. Turn Around Don’t Drown Safety Rules: 1. Monitor the NOAA Weather Radio or your local news source for weather information. 2. Get to higher ground if flooding occurs in your area. 3. Avoid already flooded areas. 4. Never drive or walk through flooded roadways, the road base may be washed out. 5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers. During a Flood Warning: 1. Listen to local area radio, NOAA Weather Radio, or TV stations for weather updates. 2. Turn off the power and water mains, if instructed to do so by local authorities. 3. Fill sinks, jugs, and bottles with clean water, in case tap water becomes contaminated. 4. Prepare to evacuate.
