Reading aloud to children from birth helps foster strong language skills and build a growing vocabulary— two important tools for learning to read. HOW IT WORKS STUDENT FCPS students can use a combination of their student ID number and a special prefix (119829) to access library resources. Student Success Cards offer Frederick County Public School (FCPS) students access to a variety of library resources and materials offered by Frederick County Public Libraries. ONE MARYLAND one book Frederick County Public Libraries will again participate in One Maryland One Book, a program from Maryland Humanities that strives to unite Marylanders of diverse backgrounds through the shared experience of reading the same book. The selection this year is The Book of Delights, a volume of lyric essays from Ross Gay about small joys we often overlook in our busy lives. Among Gay’s funny, poetic, philosophical delights: a friend’s unabashed use of air quotes, cradling a tomato seedling aboard an airplane, the silent nod of acknowledgement between the only two black people in a room. ABOUT THE author Ross Gay is the author of The Book of Delights, and four books of poetry, including his most recent, Be Holding, a love song to legendary basketball player Julius Erving—known as Dr. J—who dominated courts in the 1970s and ’80s as a small forward for the ROSS GAY Philadelphia ’76ers. Gay is a founding editor, with Karissa Chen and Patrick Rosal, of the online sports magazine “Some Call It Ballin’.” A founding board member of the Bloomington Community Orchard, a non-profit, free-fruit-for-all food justice and joy project, Gay has received fellowships from Cave Canem, the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference, and the Guggenheim Foundation. SOUTH ELEVATION New Middletown Library Progress Design work is underway and the brand new Middletown Branch Library is on track to open in 2023! Frederick County Public Libraries and Frederick County Government are continuing to work with local architecture firm, Noelker and Hull, to build the new branch according to community needs and feedback. The 15,000 square foot space will be located at 31 East Green Street on 3.5 acres of land. Building elevation designs have been approved and interior design work is in progress.
