The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in some degree of service interruption and modification for both milk
recording and type classification starting March 2020. This reality affected the volume of data available for
genetic evaluations, which reduced the number of newly proven sires this round, and also increased the
interval between test days and classifications for some cows in herds across the country. As a consequence
of these unprecedented circumstances, Lactanet Canada has temporarily relaxed the criteria for affected
cows to receive official production indexes and therefore official LPI and Pro$ values.
“Falco” Achieves Top 10 LPI Status Among Brown Swiss Sires
The Swiss-bred sire, Falco (Falk x Vigor) attracts attention this round as he penetrates the Top 10 LPI list
in #8 position and also takes #6 Fat. Huray maintains his elite status as the breed leader for LPI, Fat and
Protein while also ranking #2 Milk. The rest of the Top 5 LPI list experiences minor reranking as Lime Rock
Seasidebloom climbs a notch to #2 LPI (#1 Milk, #7 Fat, #2 Protein) as does Lime Rock Toledo, now at #3 LPI
(#3 Fat, tied #5 Protein). Shiloh Brookings Cadence ET loses some ground, now at #4 LPI (tied #5 Protein)
while Payssli ET climbs the ranks from #8 to #5 LPI (#9 Milk, tied #9 Protein). Another noteworthy newly
proven sire this round is Brown Heaven Winning Formula ET (Jongleur x Glenn), who makes his debut tied
at #1 Conformation with +12 along with below-average production yields (#88 LPI).
For cows, the top four LPI cows remain unchanged with Gubelman Juhus Crystal at the helm at #1 GLPI
while also taking #2 position for Fat and Protein. As in April, she is followed by Gubelman Biver Kendra (#2
GLPI), Nor Bella Paul Eve (#3 GLPI, #1 Fat, tied #2 Conformation), and Gubelman Biver Diana at #4 GLPI
(#3 Fat). Sigview Vasa Bacardi (dam is Top Swiss Prossli Brad) moves up the list to grab the #5 GLPI spot (#4
Fat, tied #7 Protein). The highest newly indexed cow this round is Brown Heaven Vassli Funny (dam is Brown
Heaven Biver French Fries ET), who makes an impressive debut at #6 GLPI (#7 Fat, tied #10 Protein).

Stop in at Eagle Acres Dairy and meet
the Anderson family and their beautiful,
educational enterprise. This family have
been welcoming people from all over
the globe to visit their dairy farm since
1999. Schools, groups and families have
all come to enjoy a real working dairy farm
in action and learn about (or help) with
the daily chores. A great place to see all
dairy breeds (yeah-Brown Swiss!) from their
Educate-A-Kid herd.
They are a local, sustainable and
passionate Canadian family farm. They

VISIT BROWN SWISS COWS
IN ST-GÉDÉON, QC
Stop in at Fromagerie Médard and look
follow the overhead pipelines to Ferme
Domaine de la Rivière. They use only the
milk from their herd of Brown Swiss cows
for cheese production. This fromagerie is a
story 6 generations in the making and owes
its name to Médard, son of Élise Boulianne
and Eucher Côté, a veritable legend in the
agricultural history of the region.
The story begins in the 19th century when
Élise takes possession of 100 acres of public
land in Saint-Gédéon, Lac-Saint-Jean, given
by the authorities who were able to give
land to mothers and fathers of twelve or
more living children. The objective: clear the
forest and develop the region. The widow
Boulianne and her eldest son led the way.
Norman Côté is the fifth generation of
the Côté family and current owner of the
fromagerie. Normand Côté and Madeleine
Boivin own the farm since 1986. His
