Tri-Continental (Alberta/B.C./Ontario) September 28 First Nick Headline (Bill) March 1981, (Lester) Formed in 1999, Tri-Continental is a one-of-a-kind blues / folk / world music mélange that March 2005, (Slim) January 2010 builds on artistic respect and a deep passion for, and knowledge of the blues. Bill Bourne, Lester Quitzau and Madagascar Slim present a truly unique and critically acclaimed sound that is soulful and present, intense and atmospheric. Individually and collectively, Tri-Continental has received four Juno awards and 10 nominations, a 2018 Album of the Year nomination for Dust Dance at the international Folk Music Awards and 2019 Western Canadian Music Awards nomination for Roots Group / Duo of the Year. Something very special and magical happens when Bourne, the grand improvisor, Quitzau, kidnapper of the blues, and Madagascar Slim, promotor of the Malagasy blues take the stage. Sharing and curiosity leads them on fascinat- ing musical explorations resulting in their infectious sound where world, Celtic, Latin, folk, flamenco, blues and African rhythms fuse into one. Formative years spent singing in the churches of Texas, (Marcus Mosely), Louisiana, (Will Sanders) and Michigan, (Khari McClellan) give The Sojourners’ sound an authentic edge that only comes from experience. This is real gospel, blessed with a soul that can’t be faked. Brought together by blues icon Jim Byrnes, from the moment they stepped up to the micro- phone and began singing, they realized that they had something very special going on. When Byrnes dubbed them The Sojourners, the name stuck. This is not music that strives to be polite. In the Sojourners’ universe, echoes of doo wop, R&B, country and blues weave together to create a unique sound that has all but vanished from today’s world. This is gospel music that can take a punch and remain standing. Singing praise music the Sojourners sound just as at home in a road house bar as they do in a revival tent. Ellen Braun (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut! Ellen Braun performs both as a solo act and with her band, Trundled. Her song Inchoate, made it to the top 100 in CBC’s 2018 Searchlight. Seized in the embrace of the Rockies, Ellen’s lyrical canvas has stretched to allow her to fervently capture the hearts of audiences as they follow her artistic “ The Sojourners draw on influences from the gospel, soul, blues, r&b and country odyssey. Ellen writes songs one wants to both curl up with and spread out traditions, throw them in their own melting in. Pharis and Jason Romero (British Columbia) October 26 First Nick Headline February 2014 Their heartbreakingly harmonic live show is an ever-evolving and never-ending quest for good songs and beautiful sounds. Pharis & Jason Romero have a classic story. Some scratchy old records and a custom banjo led to their meeting in 2007, and they quickly knew they were in for the long haul. They’ve since released six records and toured across North America and Europe. Their 2015 CD A Wanderer I’ll Stay won a 2016 Juno Award, a Western Canadian Music Award, and was nominated for an International Folk Music Award and four Canadian Folk Music Awards. Their newest CD, Sweet Old Religion, won a 2019 Roots and Traditional Juno Award as well as 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards for Traditional Singer and Vocal Ensemble of the year. Light, love and time lead the themes, with the duo at the forefront in their most beautiful, grainy, honest and sweet record yet. Madeleine Roger (Manitoba) A Nickelodeon Debut! It is Madeleine Roger’s artistry as a songwriter that can silence a room, uniting her magnetic voice with vivid lyricism and a maturity beyond her years. David Francey (Ontario) November 9 First Nick Headline January 2000 David Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter. He grew to under- stand the people while working for decades in Toronto train yards, the Yukon bush, and as a carpenter in the Eastern Townships, all the while writing poetry, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked. A truly authentic folk singer, Francey is a docu- mentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s, his wife, artist Beth Girdler, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999. Since then, he has released eleven albums and won three Juno Awards. In concert David is a singer and a storyteller. His wry humour and astute observations combined with his openhearted singing style have earned him a loyal following. Dave McEathron (Ontario) A Nickelodeon Debut! Dave McEathron has released Abandoned Companions along with a roots rock EP titled The Abandoned Companions Companion Piece. As the prin- cipal songwriter and frontman of the former roots rock band The Warped “ Francey’s clear, simple songs speak volumes to his followers. After a decade in 45s, McEathron has been praised for his passionate storytelling. Le Vent du Nord features Nicolas Boulerice on hurdy-gurdy, Simon Beaudry on guitar and bouzouki, Olivier Demers on violin, Réjean Brunet on button accordion and André Brunet on violin. Since its inception in August 2002, Le Vent du Nord has earned several prestigious awards, including a Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros, two Junos, a Félix at ADISQ, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and Artist of the Year at the North American Folk Alliance Annual Gala. On stage these friends create intense, joyful and dynamic live performances that expand the bounds of tradition in striking global directions. This is the modern sound of tradition, a music of the here and now. Ellen Doty (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut! Ellen Doty is a soulful Canadian vocalist and songwriter with a world-class voice. Matthew Byrne (Newfoundland) January 11, 2020 A Nickelodeon Debut! Matthew Byrne is a traditional singer, storyteller and guitar player with a repertoire shaped by his musical upbringing. With parents who were both singers and song collectors and a family focus on sharing songs, Byrne has inherited a unique repertoire as well as a fascina- tion with unearthing and reimagining traditional songs. His second album Hearts and Heroes, received a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Traditional Singer and won the award for Traditional Album of the Year. Matthew is currently supporting his newest release, Horizon Lines, a collection of material from both sides of the Atlantic that continues Byrne’s journey through his own musical lineage. This album was chosen Traditional Album of the Year at the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards. With powerful vocals, polished guitar work, and a presence that fills the room, Matthew views songs as ways of understanding the people before him, their lives, work, language and world view. Emily Triggs (Alberta) First Nick Opener with Magnolia Buckskin Nov ‘08 Emily Triggs’ debut album When Guinevere Went Under, takes you on a journey through influences and experiences that span the Deep South with the likes of Lead Belly, through Texas blues, strains from the “ Possibly the finest interpreter of traditional Appalachian Mountains to her early years in French Canada. Emily shares songs in the country. ” Penguin Eggs stories through her songs with an endearing simplicity and emotional depth. With a pure and true vocal, complementing a solid base of undeni- ably roots music composition, Emily engages the listener. Her music grips the heart and elevates the soul. Upcoming Performers January 25, 2020 Harry Manx Come celebrate the Nick’s 40th birthday with “Mysticssippi” blues man Harry Manx, who creates musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. Harry studied in India with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, inventor of the 20-string Mohan Veena, which has become Harry’s signature instrument. Harry is the recipient of seven Maple Blues awards, six Juno nominations and a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Solo Artist. Harry Manx February 22, 2020 Maria Dunn Trio Maria Dunn showcases her keen social awareness and her melodic, unvarnished songs about the lives of working men and women. Gathering, nominated for a 2017 Juno Award and winner of the 2016 Edmonton Music Prize, highlights stories of love of family, community and humanity, that fires our actions to make the world a better place. Maria will be accompanied by Shannon Johnson (vocals, violin) and Jeremiah McDade (vocals clarinet) from the Juno Award-winning The McDades. Maria Dunn Trio March 7, 2020 Dala Juno nominees and winner of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala write and sing in harmony best described as angelic. Drawing upon influ- ences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Dala write songs that are both catchy and insightful. Their album, Best Day, earned Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for English Songwriter of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year. Dala March 21, 2020 Cécile Doo-Kingué With an exceptional stage presence, guitarist and singer-songwriter Cécile Doo-Kingué blends blues, afro-roots and soul to create a unique sound. Anybody Listening – Dialogues features her versatility from blues to jazz to folk to soul to rock n’ roll. Fiery licks and seamless melody compliment her deep, laid-back voice, leaving no doubt as to the guitarist’s oneness with the instrument, nor the unity of her sound. The album earned Cécile eight Maple Blues Award nominations. Cécile Doo-Kingué April 4, 2020 The Good Lovelies Kerri Ough, Sue Passmore, and Caroline Brooks, are immensely talented vocalists and songwriters in their own right; however, it’s their voices interwoven in harmony — powerful and pure, organic and inspiring — that ele- vates the Good Lovelies from impressive to peerless. They’ve covered plenty of stylistic ground, adding tinges of pop, roots, jazz, and even hip-hop to their country folk core. Through it all, the unmistakable sound of their intertwined voices has been the sonic anchor.
